This camera has excellent day time quality! I was very impressed. The one thing I wish I knew before buying this camera is that is comes with 1gb of storage data on the Arlo Cloud. I have cameras that record high traffic areas around my home. I have to delete the videos every 3 days or so. I could pay $10 a month for more cloud storage in the future. The night time quality video is good too for a night vision view. It was super easy to install and I love that my 4 pack came with an outdoor base. Being wireless made it easy to connect. However, because it's wireless, each camera uses 4 cr123a batteries and it can be costly to keep replacing.the batteries that it came with ran out of power within a month of purchase. I have then since bought rechargeable batteries and it has fixed that. Overall, good camera for a home.

Great camera system to monitor motion

I installed a 4-camera Arlo system to monitor the outside doors of my house including the front door, garage, and 2 back doors. All cameras are mounted outside. Getting the cameras connected to the hub and establishing an Arlo account was straight forward, but I did have to rethink some of my WiFi network setup to get the best performance from the Arlo cameras. I needed to relocate my router and the Arlo hub to a central location of my home for better all-round reception. The home is traditional 2-story home, about 3400 sqft, with a 2 car garage. I originally had the hub in a corner of the home, which made it hard to get a good signal to one of the cameras at the back of the house. I also had some initial problems with the video quality from the cameras which I traced to the the 5 GHz WiFi. Once I turned off the 5 GHz radio on my wireless router, the performance improved tremendously. Since these cameras are battery operated, they are not designed to run full time. They are designed to be motion activated and record a brief few minutes (like 4 or 5) of video a day. This is ideal for my needs but if you want to monitor areas for longer, you will have significantly reduced battery life. After a month of use my batteries are still showing a full charge. I think I will get the 4 to 6 months of batter life Netgear claims based upon my usage pattern. The Arlo hub configures itself to be on the same 2.4 GHz channel as your WiFi access point which seems to be counter intuitive, but according to Netgear this is the optimal configuration. The mobile app is OK. Modes are a little confusing to figure and I don't think they are particularly useful. There is not a lot of complex functionality within the app and it is easy to figure out quickly. I also like the fact that you can monitor the cameras from the Arlo website. I would like to see and open API so that the cameras could be included within my home automation setup based upon a smartthings hub. For example, it would be nice to turn off the garage camera when I know it's my family arriving or leaving or turning off the back door camera when we are using the deck, etc. This would make modes work a lot better. It would also be great to trigger recording from external sensors rather than relying on the camera as the sensor. You can cross-trigger motion detected on one camera to record motion on another, but why spend a $150 for a motion sensor when you can buy one for $25. There is a little lag from when the camera detects motion and the recording starts, but it is minimal. I'd say it has been consistently around a second of lag. It will definitely catch somebody creeping about, but it does miss the UPS guy speed dropping a package on the at the front door. The motion detection is configurable and has a broad range which is good. I am able to se the front door camera "just right" to still capture people at the door, but not catch the hanging plants blowing in the wind.

    Very Good Security Solution

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

I've been researching different security solutions from a traditional alarm service to camera / video products like the Arlo so I was excited about the opportunity to look at one first hand. The three camera solution was shipped to me and the retail packaging is smartly designed so that the cameras are very well protected during transit. They each are locked into their own pedestal area and physically mounted to the box with a screw that attach to the bottom of each camera. Setup of the Arlo is a simple process. - Base unit (the wireless device that communicates with the camera) is wired into an existing router. - App is downloaded onto either your iOS or Android based device (iOS for me) - Create an account - Insert 4 batteries (included in the package) into each camera - Pair each camera by hitting a sync button on the base station and the camera itself. Cameras are placed or mounted in locations of your choosing. My base station is centrally located in my house so I have full wireless strength to all of my cameras as none of them are probably any more than 40 feet maximum away from the base statioh with a claimed maximum range is around 300 ft. There are two ways to mount the camera. The first is are magnetic mounts which stick to the back of the camera. Netgear includes screws and a drywall anchors for all of them and the spherical shape of the mount allows the camera to be positioned in almost any direction away from the surface. The second is a traditional camera mount (think the same kind of screw type as a tripod). These are not included in the package but for my purposes the magnetic mounts were sufficient for my home. The cameras have a surprisingly wide angle, field of view is 110 degrees (think GoPro style videos). The app will be needed to help finalize setup as there is a positioning mode that will allow the user to make adjustments to the position of the camera to see what is being captured as well as a motion detection mode where a LED lights up for when motion is detected in the FOV of the camera. One aspect of the software that is not very intuitive is after the sensitivity of the motion detection is set, there is a very small check that has to be hit at the edge of the slider before the settings are finalized and that tripped me up a couple times. The motion detection itself even at 100% can be more sensitive as there seems to be a lag before videos start recording. The rest of the software itself is pretty slick. There can be both app and email level notifications when motion is detected. Interface is slick as videos are stored in the cloud for seven days (for free!) and can be viewed remotely. Timers / rules can be set on when the system is armed so it can be on only during work hours as an example or all the time depending on what is needed. For a longer archive of videos, there is a paid service available via the app. This is a great feature compared to other security systems where a DVR / storage has to be managed locally as well whereas this is all transparent to the user with the Arlo Current battery life has been very good so far. I've had the system for about a month and the batteries still look like they are full. Wireless is a huge plus but there is also a cost for the batteries. CR123's are not as common as the usual standard sizes so budget $4-$6 per camera every 4-6 months which is the stated battery life of the camera. It doesn't look like there are good rechargeable options like Eneloops available in this size. Overall I'm quite pleased with the Arlo system and think it's a good value. Compared to a home monitoring service, there are no recurring charges except for the batteries and for most people, the free seven day video archive is probably good enough. Costs for competitors like Dropcam add up quickly - the same three camera setup with the seven day video access will be $20 monthly so it makes the Arlo pretty much a no brainer. I received this product free of charge from Netgear First Look Review Program for my honest opinions and experience with this product

    Great product with one flaw

These cameras are VERY easy to install and easy to use. The picture quality is clear and it has an app that gives you the ability to check your cameras from any phone or computer. There are motion detection settings that send notifications right to your phone whenever motion is detected and you can choose the length of time the video records. Overall it is a very proficient product that meets its intended purpose. There is one major flaw. For some reason it appears that Netgear/Arlo's server seems to have issues every once in a while. When this happens you cannot log into your account to check your live camera feed, but you also cannot even log into your account to access your library of old videos. An error message pops up saying you can't be logged in due to "internet connectivity issues". Customer service and their help forums lead you to power cycle your modem, unplug and replug the base stations, check lights, etc., but when this would happen my base would be fine and lit up and other devices in my home were connected to the wifi and working fine. So I checked the webapp from a friend's work computer without using my login information and discovered the issue is on there end. When their server goes down like that, the whole system is essentially useless. I have had this product for about a month and a half and this server problem has occurred 3 times and usually lasts a few hours. My only other con that I feel you should be forewarned of is the batteries. They are expensive and do not last very long. Keep your recording time set as low as possible (10 seconds on motion) to try to conserve battery power. They take lithium CR123 batteries which are $10-$12 for a 2 pack. Each camera takes 4 batteries. I had my cameras recording for 20 seconds and was buying new batteries almost every week! If you rent and can't drill holes to run camera lines, or live in a rural area with very light to no street traffic then this is a perfect security set for you. If you're able to drill holes and are looking for a more permanent security system, I would suggest looking into a wired set.

    Great system for most users

Overall I must say this system is great. It's clean, simple, easy to setup, easy to manage, easy to use. The camera quality is very high, the field of view is very wide, night vision is excellent. I haven't had the system long enough to verify, but batteries are supposed to last between 4-6 months; that is great news with these being wireless cameras. Being able to see your camera feeds live from anywhere is extremely convenient and being able to monitor day or night can give you great peace of mind. The iPhone app gives you what you need right up front, while configuring some of the more in-depth settings is doable, it's a little easier from a computer. Installing 3 cameras is a breeze, the most time consuming part is moving a ladder if you're mounting them anywhere high up. Speaking of the included mounts, the magnet in them is surprisingly strong and allows you to easily hang and aim. The main drawback for me, and likely only a few others, is the lack of control of the networking settings for the system. I, being more of a super-user, prefer to manage network traffic and how certain aspects are configured. I would prefer the base station to be the device that I log into to manage the system and record video to a local USB. Currently it's all stored and managed through the Arlo servers/website. Again, not a huge deal for most people, and in fact some may consider it a plus not to have to worry about maintaining the system or having that in-depth of control. I've only had the system for a few days, so I am still learning about it, but I'm off to a great start. Pros: Easy to setup/install Easy to use Great for home/small office High def, wireless cameras with night vision Convenient access from anywhere Lots of potential for new features Cons: Lack of control over networking Lack of local record/video storage options Disclaimer: While these are my honest, unbiased opinions, I did receive my Arlo Wire-Free Security System for free from Netgear as part of a reviewer program.

The Arlo system is the easiest that I found to install. The cameras are completely wireless, they use a battery and wi-fi, so you don't have to try to run wires through the attic. Picture quality is pretty high up there, even at night. You won't be able to read a license plate, but you should be able to get a recognizable shot of someones face. The biggest drawback that I see is the motion detection. A lot of cameras that detect motion save a few seconds before the motion starts, but to save battery life, Arlo starts recording from the moment it senses motion, so you may miss something if it is quick. Overall, I'm very happy with it!

This could be the permanent security system that will work for me long term. I've had it up and running for about a week now with no glitches or issues whatsoever. I love the free 7 days worth of cloud service and the ability to download recorded videos. I'm not protecting gold bars or the Mona Lisa in my house but I like to be able to keep an eye when I'm out of town. I can't find a single reason why this set up won't work for that purpose. Setup: Couldn't be easier. I followed the quick start guide and was up and running with 4 cameras in 30 minutes. This included mounting all of the brackets and everything. About the same in terms of time required for set up as the Dropcam. Range: This is where Arlo excels. My garage is detached from the house. There is about 50 feet of lawn between the house and garage. I like to have a camera in my garage so that when I get a "garage door open" alert (Liftmaster app, not Arlo), I want to be able to view a camera to see if it's my wife/kids messing around or if it's something else. My router is in my basement. I added a range extender on my main floor as close to the back of the house and garage as possible. The Dropcam would connect intermittently and video was choppy and unreliable. I'd say I would have issues about 75% of the time. With the Arlo, I plugged the base station into my router in the basement and still get 3/4 bars for signal strength. This camera takes a few seconds longer to view a live stream than the ones set up inside my house but once connected there is no break in the video stream outside of the occasional buffering. Wish list: First off I hope they start coming out with additional cameras as add ons that will enable sound (one way or even 2 way), sound detection, ability to hard wire vs using batteries, cameras that can pan/tilt/zoom. I am hoping that this is the the cards for the future because having these upgrades would truly make this a more complete security system. As others have mentioned I'd like the motion triggered recording to behave a little smarter. Rather than designating a set time to record, I'd like the camera to record until the motion event stops. The notifications with regards to motion are pretty annoying. For example, I am having some work done on my house right now and every time the front door camera detects motion I get a notification which yesterday was at least 25 of them until I shut off motion alerts for this camera about 2 hours into the day. The Dropcam behaves differently. It gives you 1 notification for a motion trigger and not another until you've cleared the first notification. This makes it less annoying. I would like to see an option for how many and how often notifications should be pushed out. Dropcam has a really nice feature that allows you to set up a "home base" which automatically shuts off alerts and/or the camera itself when your phone is in the selected vicinity. For example, it knows when I'm home so it turns off the camera altogether until I leave the house again. This saves me the trouble to manually having to turn it on/off. Yes I could use the scheduler on the Arlo but I find this impractical for my needs as my schedule is not consistent (i work at home randomly, leave/come home at different times each day, etc). Also would love to enable this feature on multiple devices so that it can automatically shut off when either my wife or I am at home. None of my wish list items are deal breakers for me because of the excellent quality of video I am able to view and the range of the cameras that make it so that I don't have to hard wire a router all the way out to my garage. It also seems like the Arlo/Netgear team is reading reviews and taking action, which hopefully means future software updates will add commonly requested features and new hardware options as well. If sound detection is a must for you then this won't work. If you just want basic motion detection and the ability to check in on your house then this is by far the easiest and best solution I've tried.

Very good camera for the price. I use mine outdoors and have attached it to my house; as I'm trying to catch someone who keeps letting their dog you know what in my yard. Since I've put it up, I've had 40-95 degree days and torrential downpours, along with severe thunderstorms...it keeps on ticking. I can only imagine it would work just as good indoors. The clarity through the camera is good; good enough to make out the person if you know them. The night vision is really good as well, considering this isn't a $1000 camera. I'm also a huge fan of the fact that it's wireless. I searched around and, for the money, this is the best wireless cam you can get. The installation was simple and the accompanying app (I have an iPhone) allows me to check the camera at any time, plus save out video and take photos. My only issue is the battery life but, that's on me b/c I have mine set to motion 100% of the time (and it's outdoors) with a 60 second record (can go up to 2 mins). So, my camera goes off every time a car drives by. It takes 4 lithium 123 batteries. If you're going to use this somewhere that has a lot of motion buy these in bulk. Overall I love this camera and would very much recommend it if you're looking for a wireless home camera system that can be used indoors or out. Easy installation, wireless, night vision and phone app really set this apart from the rest.

I was looking for purely wireless cameras and arlo fit the bill. Out of the box, set up was a cinch and the base station easily set itself up and detected all cameras. Logging in to view live shots from outside the home network has been easy and flawless especially compared to other ip cameras like foscams which I also have and still use. I got hard secure outdoor mounts from Amazon and they were easily mounted in no time. The major drawback of these cameras is that once motion is detected, there is a lag of a few seconds before the 10 second clip starts to record. Aside from that, these cameras are great for checking in on the house and dogs and the FREE cloud storage is fantastic especially compared to services like that of dropcam requiring additional $$$

the quality of the video is great and the cameras work form a good distance even with walls. i use mine at the office for surveillance. the primary use for this is for catching people or animals that move into unexpected areas. it is not designed to record continuously. the wireless part is fantastic. the infrared works great. i have recorded staff in the office out of normal hours and they did not notice the little red light that illuminates the space for IR recording. the features that are not ideal are below; 1. the range for motion sensing is too short, maybe 15' or so. if there is no movement in this range the camera will not record 2. the start up time form motion sensing to record is too slow. it take about 5 seconds to start recording. people who get within the 15' range to trigger recording are almost out of range walking at a normal pace by the time recording starts. it works best when people have to stop like at a door to enter so that gives you a period of stagnation for the camera to record them. and you want to get their face so placement is a big deal. if the motion sensor range went further it would be a huge help. if one camera started recording and trigger other cameras to record in anticipation of someone walking into field that would also help. still this is a great system as long as you know what it does and does not do. it does NOT provide 24 hour recordings or surveillance. you can open the app and look at live video and record from the app, but that is a manual process. our system replaces a motion sensor alarm system so it does what i need; it notifies me when someone is at work outside of normal hours. the free cloud service holds 7 days of recording i think and works for up to 5 cameras. more cameras can be used but then you pay $10 a month or more depending on how many cameras you are using. i do like it and i am happy with the purchase because i knew what it did and did not do prior to buying.

    Pros/Cons of Arlo Security

I purchased 10 Arlo cameras in total and they have fortified my home with an acceptable cost effective solution to video wireless security. I plan to max out my cloud subscription and technological threshold to 15 cameras. You get free cloud based recording service for up to 5 cameras but if you go over that you will need a 15 camera max Elite subscription for $149+tax ($162) per year. Still far less than a monitoring company might charge you. Since 5 cameras are free I thought I would get smart and just set up more email accounts to circumvent the charge but...Arlo figured this out and made it impossible due to location and personal information required to set up a base, and you would need mutiple wifi routers with unique SSIDs and ip addresses. Too much hassle. Arlo you won. Pros: No wires at the camera point. Arlo mounts by various metallic hub and fixed-post methods. The cameras are held on by an internal strong magnet. You mount the included 2" metallic dome or hub and "stick on" the camera to this hub by magnetic force. The screws and anchors come with the dome. You can buy extra domes, post mounts and table top pedestals so you can easily move the cameras around from location to location because a tug on the camera releases it. It's a magnet. You should buy external skins made of neoprene if you are mounting outdoors or want to change the camera's only color - pearl white. There is a rainbow of skin colors available through 3rd parties. The base units look like a router and come in the same white which I find pleasing. The required base units max out at 5 cameras per base and I have 3 of them. Boxed sets come with a base and warning! The cameras are held in the packaging by a very tight hiddenplastic screw under the camera which you could damage if you tried to pry the camera from the packaging. Base units require to be wired to your primary Internet router by the supplied network Ethernet cable. If you need longer cable to reach your router you will have to buy seperately. The base units are powered by wall wart plug. I had to buy a wide power strip to handle 3 of these side by side. The cameras must be near the base to initially prepare them wirelessly but don't get too close! After 10 cameras I found 4 ft away is optimal. Too close didn't work. After you establish the camera to base link you can go as far as your signal will permit. The phone app that controls the entire system and guides you through setting up the base and cameras, one by one is a free app or you can log in by web browser. It was brilliantly done and is easy to use. Be advised: You cannot first-time configure your base system remotely, that is, register the router once it's installed from somewhere else. I flew 600 miles away only to learn this. I thought I could register and configure the base remotety but you must be on the same wifi connect point. The app must be wirelessly connected to the base for setup. After an intuitive setup session my cameras were online, my bases connected, and I could remotely watch my cameras, review recorded motion detection, turn various modes on and off, adjust sensivity, length of recordings up to the max of 2 minutes, from anywhere! The cameras deliver crisp HD in color during the day and black and white in low light using Infrared night vision, which is amazing working in about the same area a small LED flashlight would illuminate or under bright moonlight you get very distant vision. Shooting in HD burns more power as does adjusting the motion sensitivity. There are 3 settings for resolution, battery saver (low resolution), balanced (I use this average setting and I'm happy with the results but at this level you can't read a license plate in your driveway. 5" lettering begins to blur at about 10 feet during the day, and there's 720 Hi definition which they warn effects battery life. Arlo has an acceptable depth of field and angle of view to cover almost all situations. Cons: Arlo's motion sensitivity to objects approaching straight towards the camera is poor. The more angled an object moves as in diagonal to the camera, the faster it detects it. Overall the camera are slow to wake up and start filming an event. Arlo is a late riser. And a heavy sleeper. It handles brightly backlit subjects poorly. Often showing the person as a shadow if the light is bright behind them. Example coming through a front door with the light of day behind them into a darker room you won't see face. I have 10 cameras and the most I can live stream on demand is 2 cameras before the app starts to freeze up. To circumvent this I view a camera live then place the camera on pause then watch another camera live and so on. I have a 60 Mbps connection speed and use an iPhone to watch and control Arlo with cell data or wifi and have no trouble. It takes 4 uncommon sized lithium batteries (CR123 3 volt) to power a camera. These are not your basic C-D-A-AA or AAA size and a 12 pack (3 refills-per camera) will run you about $18, or so. 15 cameras refilled with new batteries every month that's about $270 a year wiith my current usage. Arlo advises do NOT use rechargeable batteries. This is the primary design flaw that dropped my score to 4 stars. If Arlo were to sell Arlo branded rechargeables that met their standards and quality control I would say this is a 5 star product. My two cameras with the most detected motion and have night vision turned on have lost 1/3rd of their power after 3 weeks. The cameras have no use to a thief as they are useless after the are taken out of range of the base signal and would identify their new base location if reconnected elsewhere. Each base and camera have a serial number. I took photos of this info and stored it. However this won't stop some kid from doing it to be stupid and stealing your cam anyway and it will set you back $160 per camera. This is why multi cameras are important, and placement out of easy reach is best. The bandwidth issue. Don't expect to view or record 10 cameras simultaneously / casino style with the average setup.

I purchased this kit for some additional security around the home after my wife's car was broken into one night. They add a great sense of security to us both now that we have the ability to check in on the house when away and be alerted to any unexpected motion. I wasn't interested in running wires to the outside of the house, so this is the best alternative. I haven't had to change the batteries yet, but I can see this as being a recurring expense. I would also appreciate the ability to record video locally instead of relying on Netgear's cloud video service, although you can download videos that were recorded. The kit comes with a magnetic mount for each camera and one screw-in outdoor mount. Pros: Wireless Easy to set up Very well built Motion detection notifications and rules Sleek smartphone app Easy to use website Ability to download videos Cons: Occasional delays in beginning recording Non-rechargable batteries No option for local recording Limited amount of cloud recording
