I have about five of these devices in my home and watch old TV series (like Law and Order) for entertainment. No commercials. I traded off a $50 per month cable bill for $10 a month to Netflix.

The only thing good about this device was that it was easy to setup. The interface was slow and laggy. The keyboard on the remote was junk and only responded to touch every so often. The selection of channels was inferior to like products. Took it back after several hours of use and exchanged it for a Roku. Best decision I ever made. Great price, if it actually worked.

Purchased because of the interface with slingbox. Seems to work well. Noticed a little more time lag in negotiating with Netflix, but no big deal. Works great with slingbox. The only box that does so far.

Was not able to set it up to work properly, contacted support and they said our wireless network was the problem and did not provide any assistance. I replaced it with another unit (Best Buy traded for another product!!) and that unit worked fine.

Dumped cable and replaced it with streaming movies and local channels with a digital antenna. Used my current TV - not needing to purchase a hd tv. A great way to save dollars.

I have a summer cottage where I'm fortunate to have high speed internet and cable TV service. But with the cost of cable TV service rising, I decided I would keep only the internet service and purchase a slingbox at my primary residence and put some type of streaming receiver to watch TV shows at my cottage. Since I have 4 TVs at my cottage, I decided to purchase one Netgear NeoTV MAX, one WD TV Line, one Apple TV, and one Roku 3. Note that a Best Buy sales person told me all of these would work with a Slingbox. If you are considering purchasing any of these boxes, please read this review because you may find some boxes have features that suit you better. I'll review each one separately but I'll start off by saying all were relatively easy to set up. NetGear Neo MAX TV - Of the four boxes, I would rate this the worst. It was by far, the slowest to load apps. Even responses from the remote to just do simple commands had significant lag. The Neo MAX TV comes with a Slingbox App. It loaded the app so slow, I could make a cup of coffee and return only to find the app still loading. Worse, is after loading, it said it was unable to connect to the Slingbox. Note that I was able to connect to the Slingbox from an Android phone, an Apple iPhone, and an Apple iPad from the same location with no problem. I tried connecting the Netgear unit both wireless and hard-wired to my network. Both produced the same results. I was never able to connect to the Slingbox. The only positive thing I can say about the Netgear NeoTV Max was they had the best remote design which incorporated all the basic controls on one side and a keyboard on the other. It's too bad this performed so poorly because that was a nice feature. But based on the horrible lag, I would not recommend this product, regardless of whether you are trying to use a Slingbox or not. WD TV Live - This unit performed much faster than the Netgear NeoTV Max but it's remote did not have a keyboard, making entries into fields time consuming. It had a good assortment of Apps but the one I was most interested in was the Slingbox. Although it loaded much faster than the Netgear unit, it too, was unable to connect to the Slingbox. Again, I tried both wired and wireless and got the same results. If you don't need a Slingbox App, this would be an OK choice but continue reading. Roku 3 - The Roku 3 was fantastic except for one thing. It does not have a Slingbox App. Turns out the salesperson made a mistake. If you don't need a Slingbox receiver but need a general streaming receiver, this is the one I would recommend. Unlike the others, it came with everything you need, INCLUDING an HDMI cable. It had the fastest response and tons of Apps. The remote was not as full-featured as the Netgear but it more than made up for that with performance. AppleTV - Of all the units I tested, this was the ONLY box that connected to the Slingbox, albeit, through the use of an iPhone or iPad. It was easy to set up and the picture was gorgeous. I'm not a fan of Apple products but I'll say this one did everything it said it could. If you have a Slingbox and other Apple products, this would be the way to go.

Great for online streaming, bad for local files

I bought this today, admittedly without doing much research, and thought I would give it a shot. I was tired of paying for Xbox Live just to use iHeart Radio, Netflix, and a few other online services. The product itself is not bad, it doesnt feel too cheap, has both HDMI and RCA outputs, usb and sd card inputs, and, in my opinion, the best featured remote I have ever used. If you are going to buy this just to watch Netflix, Hulu Plus, or any of the other dozens of programs it lists then buy it. Its well worth the price and I would certainly recommend it to the average user. But that is where it falls short. I primarily purchased this to play video files I have stored on my desktop PC, and while it CAN do this, it CANNOT play AVI files. It does play MP4 files rather well, and it does let you go through your files rather than throw all of the videos on a big list. Overall, I like it as a streaming player, especially under $100, but its a few features short of being good enough for what I need.

    Mostly works, but has problems.

I bought this for its capability to stream Internet content (Pandora, Netflix, etc.) and my computer screen to the TV. It has WiFi and WiDi functionality built in, and the price point seems very reasonable. First unit I brought home did not work at all, and a call to the Netgear Tech Support line ran me through some troubleshooting. They eventually suggested I exchange the unit, which I did. With the second unit, I plugged the power cable into an outlet, and connected the unit to my TV via an HDMI cable. Powered on, the unit presented a welcome screen leading to an installation configuration wizard. The GUI is ok, not great, and I had a little bit of a problem figuring out how to enter my WPA2 password. The included manual (there's only one real brief manual and it only covers installation) wasn't much help here. But I got through it ok, and was eventually presented with a screen of media options, covering Netflix, Pandora, CinemaNow, Vudu, HuluPlus,YouTube, and a few others. I was able to test a few of these out, and it appears that everything is as advertised, with the unit streaming content from my wireless router's Internet connection through to my TV. For all of this, all you need is a WiFi or local Ethernet connection for the content, and a HDMI or composite cable connection to the TV. One of the content options was to stream my computer's screen to the TV. This is where WiDi comes in. I have a new Lenovo U410 laptop that comes with Windows 7 and WiDi functionality built in. I loaded up the Intel WiDi software that came with the laptop, and it loaded, found the NeoTV Max connection, and connected. The Intel WiDi software provided a signal strength of five bars, indicating a strong connection. Both the Intel WiDI software on my laptop and the NeoTV acknowledged the connection, but then on the TV all I could get was a black screen with my computer mouse cursor displaying in white. None of the rest of my computer screen was displayed on the TV. As I moved the mouse cursor on my computer the mouse cursor moved correspondingly on the TV. Multiple calls the the Netgear technical support line has not resolved the problem. Bottom line is that they said they didn't know what the problem is, and kept saying that the Lenovo U410 is not on their list of "supported products" yet. The support ticket remains unresolved, with no action plan to do anything to help me out with the problem. The NeoTV units thus show their immaturity. It could be that these have not yet been through extensive consumer testing and that Netgear's technical support group simply hasn't had time yet to develop a robust support offering for this product line. The company's technical support page for this product line is pretty much empty. If you don't need the computer screen broadcast capability, then this problem will obviously not affect you. And if you're the type that likes to be on the bleeding edge of technology then this might be the unit for you. Of course, the problem may be with my computer too, and you may not get the same results. But if you want a mature product that has good support behind it, then you might want to wait until Netgear works out some of the bugs in both the product and their support offerings.
