Great features but mediocre reliability
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.*** This review applies only to version 7 of the product. Check the model label on the package; if it does not say WGR614v7, then this rating does not apply. *** THE GOOD: This router is compact, attractive and comes with feet that let you stand it sideways if you don't have room for it to lie flat. Setup is very easy, thanks to a well thought out setup wizard. The software that comes with the router is unnecessary for a more advanced user who knows how to look up the IP address and default access credentials in the documentation and access the router directly via a web browser. (The wizard is part of the web interface, so you don't need the CD in order to access it.) Clean, fast network connections... when it works (see THE BAD, below). THE BAD: The firmware that comes loaded on this router is defective, causing the router to constantly drop connections. The first thing one must do is update to the latest firmware. However, even after doing that, the router intermittently drops all wired computer connections. NETGEAR replaced my router once under warranty, but the replacement exhibited the same problem. Repeated troubleshooting suggests a defect in this model (which is not the latest version) or the firmware. The Internet and wireless connections appear to be unaffected. THE UGLY: NETGEAR tech support strung me along on my latest call until the warranty on my router ended, then refused to take further action without a premium tech support charge. THE BOTTOM LINE: I doubt most non-technical users would have the patience to deal with intermittently dropped connections, and NETGEAR's handling of my last support call was a clear foul. I therefore cannot recommend this router.

Works For Me
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This is a good cheap router i had it for 2 or 3 years now with no problems. Some people said they had trouble setting it up but if you use the easy install wizard its a breeze i don't see how you can mess that up. Any way i never had any problems never had to call customer support and this was my first time setting up a router but its getting old for me. Currently I have 2 computers one wireless and a PS3 hooked up to it wireless. An addition to that i have Vonage as my phone service provider and this router isn't made to handle all that so i have to upgrade. I have high speed cable Internet so i have the speed just need to give my router a boost and if it ain't broke don't fix I'm sticking with netgear routers this is my experience with this router.

pretty easy to use
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I've had this router for over a year. I got it when I bought the Time Warner 3 in 1 package. The Time Warner cable guy installed everything including the router and helped me connect all of my other things that use the internet which are my laptop and my PlayStation 3, and it only took about 5 minutes. Since then there have really been no problems other than the random once-a-month loss of wireless internet connection, but it lasts only a few seconds and all that I have to do to fix it is just close the internet browser and re-open it. When this happens when I'm on my PS3, I just have to sign off of my screen-name for the PlayStation Network and sign back in. I also recommend that if it works, just leave it alone... don't tamper with any settings.

Didn't have a clue what I needed.
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The kids told me to go to Best Buy and pick up a cheap pouter, 'cause that's all I needed. Got their cheapest. It works fine and I still don't have a clue...but I got Netflixs to the TV all by myself ;-) I just started pushing buttons and got lucky. (ok, so there are few buttons..I was happy ;-)

Use For My Gaming Systems
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Bought this one for my Gaming Systems for Online Play. typically Internet Home Service are only limited to 100Mbps of Internet Speed, so there is no need to buy those High Priced Router. A must to buy, matched with 2-4 20'C CAT5e cables and you'll be good to Go. And th Wifi gives a decent connection too.

Only worked for 2 hours
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I'm well experienced with Linksys and other routers. I bought this one to hook my mother up to the Internet for the first time. I was surprised by the price, but I figured "what could go wrong". Well, I found out. It took an hour or so of struggling with it to get it to do its first successful cable Internet connection with wireless. I had to keep renewing the DHCP lease it had with the cable modem, until at one point it suddenly started working. Once it was clear that I had a connection, I proceeded with the "Comcast activation". When I was almost done with the activation, the cordless phone in the house rang. This immediately terminated the wireless connection, and I could not get it reestablished -- I had to continue the activation using an Ethernet cable. However, Comcast's activation process apparently doesn't like being interrupted, so there was no way to complete it myself. Another hour with Comcast's tech support, and I was finally good to go with a finished activation and wireless working again. The router continued to function for another hour. I decided to go to its built-in admin page. It automatically prompted me to install the new firmware. I did so, and waited for it to finish... and waited... and waited... after about 15 minutes, I figured it had enough time to flash the bios by now, so I tried reconnecting -- dead! The flash process bricked the router. No amount of unplugging/plugging, or pressing the reset button, or renewing the DHCP lease on the laptop, would get it to do anything again. That, plus I think it is absurd that it can't function when a cordless phone is in use, makes this the worst possible router you can buy. I've never had a cordless phone mess up any other router before, although I've heard rumors that it could happen. Who designs a router without taking into account the fact that 100% of everyone out there has a cordless phone? It isn't exactly an edge case to check for. This is going right back to Best Buy, and I'm getting another Linksys. Meanwhile, Mom is successfully connected with Ethernet cable to the modem, at least until I get the new router for her.

Easy to set up
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. When I went to the store I was looking for a cheap wireless router to use around home. We have a relatively slow service so I didn't need anything fast or multi-user. This router is a great match.

A little tricky, but not bad
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Trying to connect the other computers in my home network was a little tricky. The menu to find the list of connected devices was not completely intuitive. Maybe I just have trouble switching from one brand to another. .. Ha! Once set up, it works great. Haven't had to reset it, which was a regular occurrence with the former unit (different brand).

A purchuse well worth while
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. When we first got the product, a friend set it up, so we couldn't use it that much. Yesterday, though, Geek Squad came out and fixed it, and now we can use it wherever in the house with the labtop.

First wireless router
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The wireless router I purchased was shipped very fast. I received it only 48 business hours after the purchase date with no extra shipping cost. I did buy a laptop also but it was shipped on a different date which made things confusing. Everything was easy to set up.

Made my life easier
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I bought this product about a week ago with my purchase of a new laptop and im glad I did. The installation couldn't be easier its well explained in the manual with diagrams so I wouldn't get lost. I only experienced a little problem with the AT&T Siemens modem not wanting to behave properly with the router. But after a minute or two I got it working. Even though I don't have the fastest internet (only 768 kbps) I can surf the web on my desktop via ethernet, my laptop via wireless, or play online with my Wii. Great product so far.
