I have mixed feelings about this camera system. There is definitely some good and bad surrounding this system. Your opinion may vary. The good: #1 pro - No fees!!! These cameras have great functionality. They perform wonderfully and have crystal clear pictures. The instructions do a great job of giving you strategies on camera placement. The 2 way audio works well and you can pre- program voice messages that you can send to the camera at the touch of a button. I also liked the spotlights as they are very bright enabling color video at night. Once the app is set up, it is easy to use The bad: my number one issue with this system is the power cords. They are so short. Be prepared to buy extension cords if you want to place your cameras somewhere where there isn’t an outlet 9 feet away. If you’re like me and don’t like exposed wires on the outside of your house, prepare to buy some wiremold to hide the wires. Setup is a pain in general. While the box says you don’t need to use a dedicated monitor to the NVR, I feel like setup was easier than it would have been if just using the app. I got everything figured out in the end, but there were definitely some head-scratching moments and troubleshooting involved. All in all, it’s a pretty decent rig. Deserves 3.5 stars, but not 4.

The Night Owl - 10 Channel Bluetooth Wi-Fi NVR is an advanced camera monitoring system that gives you more control over the security and interaction around your home. The Night Owl has stunningly clear cameras that allow you to view the perimeter of your home and other surveillance areas in 4K. The wireless connection to the cameras works well, even at longer distances. I have not experienced any problems with visual or audible connections while on wireless. The Night Owl - 10 Channel Bluetooth Wi-Fi NVR with 4 Wi-Fi IP 4K HD 2-Way Audio Cameras and 1TB Hard Drive system is pretty easy to set up. Depending on the size of the coverage area and the placement of the cameras it can take approximately 40 minutes to over an hour to complete installation. Once the installation is complete, the setup is pretty easy. The menu is intuitive and allows you to get up and running within minutes. The mobile app is easy to use as well. I'm amazed at how fast you can view the live feed and how clear the images are on the mobile app. The system has some really neat features that help protect your home and keep you updated on activity around your home. The flood light is amazing. It's really bright, so you get a vivid picture of anything or anyone in your yard. The two-way audio is spectacular! I can easily communicate with delivery people or unexpected visitors (sales people/marketers) without having to to go the door. You can even capture facial images of people on your mobile device, which is a much appreciated enhancement. The 1TB storage unit is pretty sufficient for keeping several days of video logs. If you need to retain the files longer you will need to back them up or archive them in the cloud. It's great that you can fine tune alerts so that you are not receiving a lot of false notifications. You can be alerted when vehicles approach, people, and ignore other unimportant things like debris or leaves. Overall, the Night Owl - 10 Channel Bluetooth Wi-Fi NVR with 4 Wi-Fi IP 4K HD 2-Way Audio Cameras and 1TB Hard Drive is an outstanding security system. You will be able to comfort in knowing what is happening around your home at all times. I highly recommend the Night Owl - 10 Channel Bluetooth Wi-Fi NVR with 4 Wi-Fi IP 4K HD 2-Way Audio Cameras and 1TB Hard Drive.

Security cameras have nearly become essential. A quality NVR during this age of wire-free, cloud designs is more than welcome. The Night Owl Wi-Fi NVR is worth a look if you are willing to put in the time and thought during installation. The Night Owl NVR comes packed with just about everything needed for installation. There is a large fold out Quick Start guide to help with initial setup. This guide provides some help, but I recommend scanning the provided QR codes for more detailed instructions and video tutorials. The cameras are pretty well made, mostly plastic. The power cable is center mount threaded, offering a sealed and secure connection when installed. The cameras are very flexible and can be easily adjusted to fit nearly any installation scenario. Most adjustments can be made without tools, with the exception of camera drum/head rotation – there is a small screw securing this. The base is standard fare. There are a couple of antennas to give strength to the wireless signal, a couple of USB ports and an ethernet port in the rear, along with an HDMI port for viewing on a monitor or TV. I can appreciate the ability to view the cameras on a TV without casting or owning a smart television. There is a mouse included, but I’m not sure how useful it is. I see the pointer on screen but can’t seem to register a button click of any sort. Still need to figure that one out. After looking over all the equipment, the “fun” begins – installation. Installation is always the most challenging task for setting up home security, but in the case of the Night Owl NVR, it was a bit more of a chore for my case. The primary issue is needing to power each camera using the provided adapter. This means you need an outlet near the install location or you will have to run an extension to power the camera. In my case, the installs were primary on the eaves. This meant running the camera power through the attic in most cases – busy work both mentally and physically. One of my biggest installation pet peeves was antenna position when installing in a hanging posture. The antenna on these cameras is pretty long. It has to lean awkwardly when installing in a hanging manner. There are some neat features on these cameras. They give verbal confirmation during install and power cycle. They have decent 2-way audio. They also have micro SD card slots for backup. The signal strength was good as well. One of my biggest gripes about the camera is it’s limited field of view – just 100 degrees. The Night Owl Protect app allows you to view and manage your camera system while on the go. The single biggest issue I had with this camera system was dealing with the app. I successfully got my system up and running, and was able to connect to my system via the app, but it was very bumpy ride on the journey. There were at least 3 occasions the app hung and didn’t respond during setup. The app has trouble refreshing when you switch to other apps and return to it. It’s just a buggy experience. It does offer functionality to further dial-in your Night Owl NVR system, such as zones, sensitivity, and object detection, and you can review recordings, activity logs, and add additional users. Very useful stuff, but it needs to be more consistent, in my opinion. Well, is it a worthy purchase? I think so. There are advantages to having a quality NVR – no monthly service fees, local storage, complete control. Night Owl has a pretty solid offering with all the options and features found in most plug-n-play camera sets. The setup can be cumbersome, depending on your use case, and the app really needs work. Overall, I think it is worth a strong look, and could be a real winner with a more consistent app experience.

Just received my Night Owl 10 Channel Bluetooth Wi-Fi NVR with 4 Wi-Fi IP 4K HD 2-Way Audio Camera and 1TB Hard Drive Security Camera System a week ago and have been putting it through it's paces. My main reason for getting this system is because it's wireless. I got last years model which was 1080P but a wired system; which still works flawlessly. Night Owl is becoming a brand that I love and can depend on. Very reliable and easy to setup and use. Inside the package you will receive the following: Box 1 - 1TB WNVR Hard Drive, Power Adapter, HDMI Cable, Ethernet Cable, USB Mouse, (2) Antennas, and Quick Setup Guide. Also included is 4 Power Adapter for each Camera, and a pin tool to reset the cameras when necessary. Box 2 - (4) Wi-Fi IP 4K HD Cameras, (4) Antennas, and mounting screws for each camera. The Quick Start Guide is so easy to use and follow along. Once you get the WNVR plugged in and up and running, you will need to download the Night Owl Protection app from the App Store on iOS or Google Play Store for Android and either Sign-In or Create a New Account. Once you're logged in, the app will guide you through the rest of the setup process. This is by far the best camera system we've used in our condo. We've slowly been upgrading our condo over the last year and this camera system came along just in time. 4K Video and Audio is amazing. The camera system can be setup using your TV or a separate monitor which is why they include the small USB mouse. We opted to just use our phones which works out great. We can keep an eye out on various areas of the house, especially when we are away at work or on vacation. Although not a deal-breaker, I will say the housing of cameras while sturdy feel kinda plasticky. And speaking of the cameras, something we absolutely love is the fact that even though the WNVR is 1TB, each individual camera also has a slot for a microSD card as well.

No Fee but heavy delay when recording

I like the concept here. 4 x camera's that are wireless with an included NVR that you can setup with your smart phone. That is all great. When setting up it was pretty easy. Just download the app and scan the NVR then after you create an account you scan the QR code for each camera and label them. All set. When testing them the footage was just very delayed. It was hard to test since if your wanting to be notified when a presence is at your house there will be a delay in footage. That can be frustrating. However if your patient the footage is real clear and the night mode is good/great. I did not like the power adapters as there was no real way to extend them and cover the brick from the outside elements. I wish they offered housing to seal it to the outlet or extend the power so I can place the camera's more central on my home. The App was reliable and very intuitive. I did feel like the 2 way audio was above average and clear. I am just not sure that there would be times I would talk to my backyard except to yell at the dogs. They did not yell back :) In summary this is a great system for someone who does not want to run wiring to the camera's and does not want monthly subscriptions. This fits that need well. If you have capability to run ethernet then there are better solutions. If you do not have power at each location then there are other solutions that are battery operated. It in the end depends on the need you have for the best application.

Thank you for taking the time to review your product. We truly appreciate your feedback! Regarding the delay, are you noticing this delay when viewing the cameras from a TV / monitor or remotely via the app? If remotely, it could be caused by slower Internet speeds. If there is insufficient speed, you will see a lag / delay. If you do not believe that is the issue, then it could be tied to how much traffic you have on that wi-fi channel (i.e. how many smart devices). You may need to shift to a different wi-fi channel which has less traffic and would thus alleviate any delays. Please visit your product's support page at support.nightowlsp.com for additional troubleshooting material or to live chat with one of our technicians. Thank you for choosing Night Owl!

I'll preface this whole review stating that this system was used to replace mostly a bunch of Arlo wifi cameras in my home. It's not watching over a business or anything. It's just capturing moments in my home and giving us some extra security in case something bad happens. Setup is pretty easy. You have two options and I tried both of them. You can go with the headless option that they recommend where you just connect the PVR box to your network via ethernet and then plug it in and you can use their Night Owl Connect app to do a full guided setup. There were a couple of quirks with the setup process on the app but for the most part it worked pretty well. Quirks in their apps are going to be a common theme in this review. After setting up all of the cameras, you can move on to mounting them where you'd like.I was a tad disappointed that these cameras didn't have a standard camera mount thread so I could use some of our existing mounting points but that's not too terrible. You have 3 screws. The camera can move around pretty easily but just make sure you can achieve the angle you want to get before finalizing the mount. The other method of setting things up is to connect the box to a TV and go through the setup steps on the TV with their included mouse. This is kind of where the good parts end for me. Setup is pretty easy but the actual cameras leave a bit to be desired. There's no native HomeKit support so if you want to be able to view these on your iPhone or Apple TV or iPad without using their app, you're left to creating a Homebridge server. It took me an eternity to find the RTSP path so I could add these to Homebridge. But that's probably an edge case. The cameras are only 8 frames per second. They're 4K but the picture isn't quite as nice as I'd expect a 4K camera to deliver. Almost like the camera sensor is capturing closer to a 1440p image and then upscaling it. Then the camera themselves don't have any indicator lights on them but the breakaway cable that connects them to the power adapters has the brightest green light you'll ever see on it indicating the camera is online. Electrical tape is strongly recommended here. Now let's talk about the app. I'll start with the good. You can bypass the app all together and just view things on a monitor or TV if you connect the box to one. The app is also available pretty much anywhere. There's a mac and windows application in addition to the iOS and Android apps. So you have plenty of options on how to connect to your cameras. That's about all I can say that's good about the app though. The weird design decisions and overall slow and clunky interface is just terrible in this day and age. From launching the app to viewing one of your cameras it can take 30 seconds or more for everything to load and finally show you a live image. The app loads up to a list of your PVR devices and that's it. So if you don't have a large collection of these, there's literally 1 button on the screen that you need to press. You press that button and it opens up some information about that PVR box and a loading sign in the middle makes it impossible to do anything while it checks for connected cameras for a good 20+ seconds. THEN you can finally tap on a camera (with no preview) to see what's live. There's also a live view button on the PVR info screen that takes you to a preview of your first channel (stretched into a square shape for some reason) and then you have the option to display more than one camera at this point. It's just so many hoops to jump through to do what I would assume is the most important aspect of a security camera system which is to just view the cameras. I won't even mention the fact that the app doesn't appear to have been updated for more modern iPhones because some of the buttons are crammed at the very bottom of the screen where the swipe bar is (below the safe area). So the app is pretty terrible. I can overlook this because I can set things up through a Homebridge server so I can view my live cameras in my iPhone's Home app but that involves transcoding into a lesser quality video and everything so it's not ideal. One thing that's harder to forgive is a lack of the continuous recording option. I understand when other cameras who want to sell you their cloud storage solutions only record movement but when I'm recording onto my own device (and on a security device) I should at least have the option to recording always. Somehow this is absent and I'm forced to trust that the motion sensors picked up enough movement to activate a recording. I've also had a couple issues with all of the recordings not showing up in the app until I reboot the PVR but that could just be a weird thing that happens every once and a while. All-in-all, the ease of setup at least gives this system some redeemable qualities for the average buyer who doesn't have a lot of expectations. The cameras work and the quality is ok. The PVR works for the most part. Once you have your PVR and cameras set up it's pretty much a set it and forget it kind of thing. I really wish the apps were a lot better designed and got you into viewing your cameras quickly and I really wish there was a continuous recording option. As is, I don't think I would recommend this system. I'll probably be on the lookout for a system with cameras that are at least 30fps and possibly connects with HomeKit natively instead of needing Homebridge. And a lack of continuous recording is kind of a dealbreaker since that was the main feature my existing cameras lacked and I was hoping to replace.

Good afternoon and thank you for the review. This system is not marketed as being compatible with HomeKit. We are glad you were able to get it connected, but this product was not intended to be used that way. Currently, it works with Google Assistant and can be live streamed using Chromecast. We hope to have compatibility with HomeKit in the future, but that is not currently an option. Also, continuous recording is an option. Within the Camera main menu, you should see Recording Settings and you can select continuous for each camera you want to record 24/7. Please view page 52 of your product manual at the link below. Additionally, please contact our technical support team if you have any questions about this product's features. They are standing by and happy to assist. Thank you. https://support.nightowlsp.com/hc/en-us/articles/1260802076869-BTWN8-Series

Best WiFi Camera for Distance from Base

This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

The base unit and cameras were very easy to install and view using the cell phone app. I did connect the base unit via ethernet to my LAN. I also connected the base unit via an HDMI cable to one of the ports on a TV, there were no problems displaying on the TV set. I actually called support due to a small mistake I made using the phone app during initial setup. It was totally my fault during the verify phase of registering and creating my sign in. I didn’t see the obvious place to enter the code that is sent to me as a text message. In any event I can attest to the quick response I got when calling the Night Owl support team. The person was knowledgeable and he realized my error. He also gave me some insight into other features. Bottom line, the Night Owl support is excellent. We had a good laugh and I still don’t know how I made the simple error. You are asked to pair the cameras within 8 feet of the base unit. All four cameras paired without any intervention on my part after they were simply powered on. A helpful voice tells you status and eventually will say the cameras are ready within 15 seconds. I checked a few times that I could turn the cameras off and on and each time they re-paired on their own, no problems. So this is important and the cameras worked great re-connecting. The video from the cameras is crystal clear. I did notice that when you open the app, the video of all cameras came up instantly although they were about 100 feet from the base unit. I have noticed that the Night Owl is much better at handling longer distance than other brands that I am currently using. The other brands took 15-30 seconds to display the video on my cell phone using their apps which are much more rudimentary. So hands down the Night Owl is better. I also played with the microphone, siren and flood lights - everything worked perfectly. The newer technologies seem to have improved distance, picture and especially ease of setup (plus the ability to use the cell phone app to control your system settings). Other systems only use a mouse attached to the base unit to operate a rather clumsy interface via your HDMI connection to the TV screen. I highly recommend this unit as excellent quality, superior GUI and great support from their techs.
