The Nikon 50mm 1.4g lens is an excellent choice for any SLR user. It is a little heavier than the Nikon 50mm 1.8g, but the weight is balanced by it's exceptional light gathering capabilities. You can shoot without a flash indoors even at night. The 1.4 aperture also provides excellent depth of field control with awesome bokeh effects. The price is great for a lens of this quality and features. Metal mount, rear seal gasket, and internal silent wave motor focusing system are a few of the premium features you'll appreciate with this lens. A little more expensive than the excellent Nikon 50mm 1.8g, the 50mm 1.4g offers excellent value for long term ownership. Every SLR owner should have a 50mm lens and this is an excellent choice! Once you use the 50mm, you'll find it will be your go to lens for any shooting situation. I use mine 90% of the time...

Very sharp but a little slow to focus

Here is what I like about the Nikon 50mm 1.4 lens: It is short and light to carry. It looks great on my D7000. The manual focusing ring is smooth and the long travel allows for very easy, fine focusing adjustments. The Auto/Manual focus switch works well. This lens is as sharp as anything else I have ever owned. (but not at f1.4) Here is what I am not so happy with: The lens is the slowest to achieve auto focus I have ever owned. Images taken at f1.4 look like I had some kind of medium strength “soft focus” filter on the lens.

With a new baby on the way I needed a lens that would not only provide sharp close range photos, but work well with a wide range of lighting conditions. This lens nailed it. Open up the aperture to get tons of light without having to use the flash. This also gives the photos the depth of field that is seen in a lot of professional shots. The lens worked great on our Nikon D3000, even though it is designed for the larger frame cameras. Using it on the smaller frame camera does change the focal length of the lens from 50mm to something closer to 80mm.

This 50mm f/1.4G lens from Nikon is great. I've used it for night and low light situations where I don't want to use a flash. The clarity and detail with this 50mm lens is sensational. Its auto focus is fast and quiet. The results are great. I am truly amazed with the bokeh that this lens offers. The background blur is so intense.

So far I am really enjoying using this 50mm f/1.4 lens. It has fast autofocus, good bokah, is small, lightweight, and yields sharp images when it hits focus on my D800. But this is my first "modern" G series lens, after using nothing but older AF-D and manual focus lenses on my Nikons, so I don't have the same perspective or presumptions as other "professional" reviewers have who generally panned this lens's performance. Regardless, if you can get this lens on sale, it is a great addition if you need a fast prime 50mm F-mount lens. The only downside is that it takes 58mm lens filters, so all my 52mm filters I use on my older prime lenses won't fit.

This is one of the best lenses Nikon makes. It's focus is fast. It is sharp and quiet. This fast small lens has always been one of my favorites and one I use the most. Small and light, easy to transport. Absolutely amazing for portraits and even some macro work. If you don't have one you need one. And best buy has been great with their price guarantee. I paid 449 and they dropped the price to 399 2 weeks later. I went back and they refunded me the difference. Love Best buy!

Excellent lens for portraits and low light. the 1.4 nails it. This is a good lens on my D7100. I had the 1.8 and needed a 1.4 for even better low light situations.

So happy I purchased this lens. It has a fast focus, performs excellently in low light, and creates a beautiful bokeh effect and makes backgrounds just wash away in a fantastic blur. definitely worth it's value.

First thing I noticed was the beautiful bokeh...nothing else like it to make a picture pop. Quality lens that is lightweight and great for everyday use...portraits and landscapes included...would make a nice compact travel lens...I have the 1.8, too, but haven't made any comparisons yet...only guessing that this 1.4 will be just as great and should be even more useful with the extra stop...

I bought this lens as my goto for portraits on my DX cameras, but also as my see in the extreme dark lens. 1.4 gathers 2/3 of a stop more light than 1.8 and when you need it, it matters. This lens would also be a great first lens if you are considering an FX body, or even with the new Z 6 or Z 7 and it’s adaptor. Nothing not to like.

At 1.4 aperture this is a very affordable 50mm prime lens for beginners and pros alike especially since f 1.2 prime nikons are almost impossible to come by these days. The lens performed flawlessly out of the box for me. Good Bokeh with sharp images, a good all around lens.

I've had this lens for approximately two weeks and have been taking it out every night for some shots at a night time tropical bar. With the mixture of colors and low light mood, this lens is able to capture my subject with no issue. It is a little slow to focus sometimes but what do you expect, it's 1.4. Regardless this lens will produce tack sharp and vivid imagery if you utilize it properly! Get your hands dirty!

I am an amateur photographer but I love this lens. It is great for food photography or nature photography. It is not a macro but all the photos I have taken have been clear and crisp. I am more used to AF lenses so it does take some getting used to stepping back to take a pic. Overall very happy.

This is fast becoming my lens of choice and will be the permanent resident on my Nikon. It's versatile enough to be used in a variety of situations from close-ups to landscapes. I only revert to the zoom lenses on rare occasions. The photos are clear and sharp - close-ups have a great bokeh background. Love it!

The lens itself is terrific- light, quick, good bokeh. Advertised in the weekly flyer and as a Deal of the Day, no stores within 100 miles ever had it in stock. I had to order it, then, when that one arrived with internal damage, I had to have another one transferred from another store. Once I finally got it, I've been quite happy with it.

I'm using this as a portrait lens on my DX Nikon D500 (equivalent to 80mm). This lens is small but produces mighty results. Images are pin sharp where you want them to be and super smoothly blurry with remarkable bokeh everywhere else (outside of the focal plane).
