Very disapointing

I've been buying cameras for over 30 years and this is my most disappointing camera purchase. I made the mistake of thinking if it's Nikon, it must be good. My first issue is the layout of the view screen and buttons on the back. At first you may (like I did) like the huge view screen. however, because it's so large, you end up with your thumb print over part of the screen because you don't have much of anywhere else to grab on to. If you don't touch the screen, your thumb ends up pushing the menu button. That brings up the menu, 99 times out of 100 you don't want the menu and miss a shot because the menu is in the way. They could have placed the menu button below the options button or indented it so you don't accidentally press it. Next problem I have is the quality of the photos. My original thought for this review was that all cameras seem to take good quality photos and it's basically the features and feel that you need to decide on. Well, that changed as I used the Nikon CoolPix more and more. It tries to do so much that you miss shots because the camera is still deciding how to take the picture. If you take if off auto mode, everything is out of focus. Flash indoors is only good for a short range. You can't be too close or the photo is too bright. Too far and it's too dark.
Like I said, I've been into taking photos for over 30 years so I don't think any of my issues are "user" related. I know how to use a camera and will work at learning how a to operate a new camera, just like I have the previous 10 or so cameras I've owned (and still use). This one just doesn't.
I'm going back to Canon.

This was the first digital camera I have owned and I couldn't be happier. The pictures are very clear, the videos turn out extremely well (sound, too) - it's an all around great camera.

I got this camera because it was very easy to use and had a good price. I had a nikon before and i loved it but then it broke so i needed a new one. They didnt have my old one so i got this one instead.
When i got home and tried everything out, i was happy with it. but then i figured out that without the flash the picture quality was not very good. and with the flash you look very greasy.
I'm kind of disapointed. i recommend nikon cameras but probably not this particular camera.

This camera took splendid pictures of everything I shot. Pictures came out extremely clear and without any grain, even in dark scenes!
Would definitely recommend this to friends.

I purchased this camera because my Canon Powershot A75 died. This camera came to my attention because it was on sale, and not very expensive.

This camera is a very good deal. It has a nice big screen, great sound for when your video taping, and can take damages okay.

This unit was purchased for equipment(Trenching Machines) problem diagnostic aid images in service department. The features available are a perfect match for indoor low light, outdoor bright sunlight and glare from steel parts, and hard to focus areas inside engine compartments and hard to see undercarriage components. Capturing good usable images of dirty greasy parts is a challenge and this little guy can do just what is needed.

Good Little Camera

This is my first digital camera. I was able to read the "quick start" directions and begin using the camera immediately. I quickly found out that displaying pictures wears down the batteries real fast. Uses 2 AA batteries, which are easy to carry and readily available. Picture quality is great. And, for those with vision problems, 3" Screen is real handy. Love it!

After owning this camera for 4 months, I tried to turn it on and got a "lens error" after reading reviews I find that is a common problem. I sent the camera under warranty in the original box I purchased it in back to Nikon. The Lens cover would not open at all, Nikon said it could NOT be covered under warranty and wanted $87 to fix it. It is 4 months old, I have taken a total of 500 pictures with it- never even filled a memory card. I will never buy another Nikon Product as long as I live, they wont even honor their own warranty. Beware of purchaseing a product the company will not stand behind.

Terrible on batteries

Takes fairly good pics for the price, BUT this camera eats batteries at prodigious rate even if it is turned off...install a new set of alkalines, make sure it is switched off and put it on the shelf for a couple of weeks...the batteries will be dead!...whats worse is that the "dead" batteries are only down to 1.4 V...DO NOT BUY, but if you do, buy a 100 pack of batteries!...you cannot use rechargeables in this camera.

Do not use for videos !!!

Purchased camera 3/21/08 as an upgrade to my old Nikon Coolpix 3100 which only records 40 seconds of video at a time. The Nikon Coolpix L18 can record up to 20 min of video footage at a time. Used it for first time at an event for raising money for fallen police officers on 4/19/08. Once video footage got to about 14 minutes or 1.1 GB, file became corrupted and remained "trapped" inside camera. Geek squad recommended I get Dazzle DVD Recorder to retrieve video which did work. For $55.00 I was able to buy an external device in order to resolve the problem with this camera. Nikon customer support was of no help. I exceeded the 14 day return policy with this camera and I foolishly did not purchase a Performance Service plan. Stuck with camera...bought a new Canon now.

Junk or just bad luck??

Bought this camera today, 9-9-08, during lunch. Did some research and it seemed like a no brainer as far as point-and-shoot cameras go.
Got it all formatted and ready to test out and then selected the MACRO feature. Lens kept grinding and making noise. Oh well, thought I got a lemon. Go back to store (1/2 mile from work) and hour later and do an exchange. Get back to the office and fire the second camera up and the SAME EXACT THING happens.
Makes no sense but clearly there are wicked sounds coming out of the camera that are not normal. Sorry but returning this and not buying this make again.
