There are a surprising number of well done films running around out there, but every now and then one comes along that is truly special. I believe No Country for Old Men to be one of them. I'm a long time fan of the Coen Brothers and with only one exception, I have always enjoyed their work, whether it be their gritty dramas or their over the top comedies. Despite their excellent track record, this one really stands out among the others. Perhaps its because Cormac McCarthy's original book reads more like a screenplay than a novel, so his work tends to translate exceptionally well to the big screen. The performances by Javier Bardem, Josh Brolin and Tommy Lee Jones really bring the characters to life and I found myself becoming completely absorbed in their world. I bought the DVD as soon as it was available and while the picture quality was above average, the Blu-ray is a solid upgrade with sharp images and excellent colors, yet a fine layer of grain remains and it's very dreary when it needs to be. If I could only watch one Coen Brothers film again, this would surely be the title I would choose. Highly recommended...and please do check out the book as well. If you've read anything by McCarthy, you're in for a real treat!
