I was using my laptop hooked to my TV to stream online content and was having lagging issues and poor quality picture. The NVIDIA SHIELD works so much better. Great quality picture and zero lagging.

It doesn't get better than this. If you are willing to spend the money there isn't a better streamer out there. Can't comment on the gaming aspect, never used it for that. Very fast, great picture,

I bounced back and forth between apple and firetv for couple of weeks but decided to settle on shield tv. My main criteria was streaming first then gaming or whatever it provides. As a streamer it works well without any slow downs like firetv and apple, but lacks support from app developers and not as polished as its competitors. It makes up by being a superior gaming box and added bonus of built in chromecast. Remote is cheaply made and it shows, button sticks and doesn't register every time. Game pad is well made and works well. Once google puts some serious effort into developing their OS, this will be the first choice.

here is my review
Why you SHOULD get it:
This is hands-down the best tv streaming device out there. You just need to know (or google in about 5 minutes) how to use it. Most apps you need are in the included Google Play store, but you can side-load any android apps that aren’t (google it). You can put third party apps on the home screen by adding shortcuts to them (google that too). It has Netflix and Amazon streaming apps pre-installed (you need to have an account for those respective services to use them). It can play any audio or video file type with the right app. You can plug-and-play an external hard drive, and transfer files to and from other computers and drives on your network. You can stream from any device on your network. The interface is better than Fire TV, and the new Fire TV doesn’t have USB input for extra storage. You can use any programmable or learning (aka “universal”) IR remote. You can use any Bluetooth controller. You can stream live TV with the right apps if you’re a subscriber to that live TV service. It’s fast. It’s small. It looks pretty cool. Not only does it work, but there is absolutely nothing I can think of that anyone would want to do with it as a video streaming device, that this device can’t do. It is far and away the absolute best device for that purpose.

I've only recently become a user of this particular device. I was always curious about similar devices but never really considered the Shield TV until just recently. Initially, I was attracted to it specifically for streaming games off of my PC in 4K HDR on my television. I own a Sony Bravia 900E Television and the computer I built has a GeForce GTX1080 FTW edition, so a perfect card to stream games. After using a WIRED connection to both my PC and the Shield; I have to say that I'm very impressed. With a good broadband connection, the streaming is near flawless. So the singular reason I bought it works great. Now I will say that in most instances it automatically sets the game you're playing to the graphical setting the Shield will put at default to run at optimum streaming speeds while you're gaming. But I manually changed most of the graphics settings myself and it works great. The Android TV aspect of the device works very quickly and smoothly. The apps work great and as far as streaming 4K movies and TV through this device, it offers a wider, true arrange of 4K content over devices like my personal 4K Apple TV. Also it's quite small, well designed and looks very attractive next to a proper TV console. It's to me a tiny computer acting lilke a sort of embassador for streaming 4K content locally on a proper, powerful little device. Also I'm not a fan at all of third party gaming controllers, but the Shield TV controller works pretty well. I think it's tactile response is not as good as Sony or Microsoft but after hearing about connectivity problems with both controllers, I decided to get the bundle. So overall, yeah. If you're looking for a well working, dedicated 4K device and if you're looking to stream your collection of PC games locally, the Shield is a great choice. I'll be keeping my eye on future Shield generation devices... and that's probably the best thing you can say about it.

What doesn't this device do? I was debating this or an Apple TV. Selling points for me:
- Chromecast built-in
- 4K video on more apps than any other device at the time of purchase
- Gaming! you can stream from your PC or from Nvidia's online library
- Using services like Sling TV or PS Vue, I've 100% cut my cable bill
- Google Assistant (coming in the future) built-in so I can simply talk to my Nvidia Shield to turn off my lights or add things to my shopping list
On the negative side, earlier I had issues where the device would lose internet connection frequently. However after the most recent software update I am no longer seeing issues of any kind!

The Nvidia shield blows all the other tv boxes away. Amazing quality and it can play games as well as 4k content. Would highly recommend over the Amazon fire, Roku or apple tv.

I had to return my first one because I thought it was defective. there is a weird bug that tech support was unable to help me resolve. I spent days trying to resolve it too. If I turn off my PC monitor it stops streaming to my TV. Really annoying. But, when it does work it works seamlessly. No noticeable lag. I did run into some games that the Shield Controller would not work with and some games that would not launch properly whether they were stand alone or Steam games. I had to create a shortcut to my desktop to launch them. The controller is not as good as an XBOX gamepad either. All in all, it is pretty good. Not as easy to use as the Steam but is the only way to stream 4K right now.

Easy setup, fast and smooth operation, and a nice interface. My only complaint is that I would like to have play/pause, fast forward, and rewind functions on the remote instead of having to use on-screen functions. I like the slim design but I prefer my Roku remote to this one for functionality.

After doing extensive research and owning two other set top boxes, I can say this is the best- a great user interface, app availability, expandable storage, and it functions as a Chromecast as well. Netflix, HBO, YouTube, Amazon Prime Video, Kodi, CBS All Access, just to name a few, and they all work beautifully. Not to mention the vast array of games available from the comfort of your couch. The Shield has it all over Apple TV, Roku, or the Amazon Fire TV or stick, as well as the less expensive plethora of android set top boxes. A great value and very enjoyable to use!

Nice media player, that runs google assistant. Has more options than most players, since it has google play store. Interface could be better. The controller also could be better. either more clear buttons for specific actions like sleep mode, etc. still better and faster than the fireatick, cube or roku. If you are a gamer is definitely a plus.

Great picture quality and speed for anyone streaming video. I've tried a few games too and it seemed responsive. I'm not much of a gamer so I don't have anything to compare it to. But the streaming is great compared to my firestick. Comparable to firetv and cube but better since you can install android apps and play games using emulators.

I bought the Nvidia Shield out of curiosity. At first glance, it seemed like any other streamer such as a Roku or Fire TV. However, after using it's many other functions, there's more to this device than it's competitors. First, it's probably the most powerful Google TV so far. Just like the aforementioned Roku and Fire TV, you can stream from almost all services such as Netflix, Hulu, Amazon TV and so on. The one streaming app that doesn't work is that with my cable provider. Because of the powerful hardware, all the apps are very snappy and fast in loading, especially compared with other streaming devices. The amazing function of this device is the gaming functionality. You can connect your Steam account and play some of the games in the library. Not all games work (yet) because of the interface. But games that do work, work exceptionally well. You can also connect to a special Nvidia Server, which houses games that are compatible with the device. Most games are free, with AAA titles at a slight cost. Lastly, you can stream from your PC to the device and play some of your games remotely. The setup is a little complicated and has some requirements for the computer, but when it works, it also works surprisingly well. There is more that device can do, but I wouldn't do it justice by listing them all. Just rest assured that this device can do almost anything for a "media streamer". My only disappointment is the price. Compared to other devices, this device is possibly twice the cost. Considering the capabilities of the Nvidia Shield, I understand why. When considering the Nvidia Shield for your home entertainment center, do some research. There are other, cheaper devices that can do the same or similar thing, which is OK. But if you want something with a "Wow" factor, this could be the device your looking for.

The Nvidia Shield TV (2017) model.
What else would you like from an Android TV box? 4K Video, has it, 4K 60fps games, have them, HDR output for that ever amazing video on supported displays, totally has it. Speed and reliability you'd expect from Nvidia, with the power of Andorid.
YouTube app supports 4K/60fps/HDR video streams now, Netflix and Amazon Video also have 4K/HDR streaming video.
You can stream to YouTube/Twitch from your Shield TV.
Now, I just bought the TV not the 500gb version, as I don't know what I'd do with 500gb on an Android device since I just literally stream video or play some Jetpack Joy Ride now and then.
It's super small, low power usage, you can turn off the green Nvidia Light.
What I don't like... No Direct TV app support =\ There's a limited Google Play store, rooting this device is complex.
Pros:
HEVC 4K/60/HDR Support
Speedy
YouTube, Netflix, Amazon Video
Kodi 17+ Out of the Box
Lightweight
Small
Can Side Load APK
Cons:
Touch Controller is frustrating when you hit the mic button and android totally messes up whatever you were doing. There's no way to disable it.
Price. . 199$ isn't BAD for the technology they crammed in here, but I'd be more happy at 100-120$
Seriously, can we not get access to all apps? Like DirectTV where you at!?
