This 'slice of life' film includes familiar themes found in many anime stories and there are several nice honest moments. While I find 'Whisper of the Heart', one of my favorite Ghibli films, much more memorable I still enjoy 'Ocean Waves' as an easy to watch place to escape for a bit. What, for me, is the real treat on this DVD is the extra 'Ghiblies Episode 2'. Every minute of this short offers fun, crazy, sweet, nostalgic, and unique discoveries. I was curious about the main film and am not disappointed and 'Ghiblies Ep 2' is worth the price of the DVD, for me. The 'first love' story in 'Ghiblies Ep 2' is especially charming. The music used in that part, Humoresque No.7 in G flat Op.101 by Antonin Dvorak, is really effective. Enjoying this DVD led to interesting research into the history of 'The Ghiblies' shorts, the Antonin Dvorak music used in 'Ghiblies 2', and the 'Ocean Waves' story itself.

When I was a teenager in highschool I heard about this film online and I’ve waited 10 years to find it. Also the ghibli short is hilarious about ramen. I saw it in theater and feel so excited to show it to friends.

Ghibli just always has this quality to it's movies that never changes, this one is just as good as all it's other hits, and quite relatable.

I'm so glad this finally made it to Bluray after years of not being available in the US. This is certainly not in the league with the later Studio Ghibli classics, but given it's origin as a TV production it is heads and shoulders above much of the mass produced by the numbers animation. A much more mature personal story than most US animation tries to tell and even much more basic than some of the more well known Studio Ghibli work without all the fantastical flying pigs and knee deep allegory.

As a fan of the Studio Ghibli movies, I really enjoyed Ocean Waves. Unlike the other Ghibli films which are much more fantasy, this one is much like a high school drama/romance. The setting is really well portrayed and the artwork is very well done. The characters are very dynamic and the story line is very realistic. I also enjoyed watching the bonus features and seeing the staff come together 10 years after the film was released to talk about the film.

The animation is well done, just as many of studio Ghibli movies are. The story is itself is a bit slow.

Ocean Waves is a great classic movie released by Studio Ghibli. It is not a Miyazaki film and is very different from Miyazaki's films which entail more of a fantasy element. This anime is best described as a high school romance/drama. I highly recommend watching it.
Note: This movie does not have English dubs. It is only in Japanese with subtitles.

I enjoy watching different films from Studio Ghibli, as I continue to learn more about their various storytellers. This is the first time I have heard about this film, and I was intrigued to see what it was all about.
If you're looking to find the magic and wonder like in Hayao Miyazaki's films, you really won't find it here. That's not to say it's not worth giving this film a try. There are other films worth seeing that would grab your attention (like Castle in the Sky if you have yet to watch it). What made it a challenge was to keep interest in Rikako and her selfishness of trying to get back with her father.
Again, it's not a bad film, and I don't mind saying try givin' this a shot, but if you can borrow it from another friend. If you have to buy another anime film, wait for Your Name - that is worth seeing in theaters and getting a Blu Ray copy.

This is actually a Japanese anime television film from 1993 originally titled 'I Can Hear the Sea'. Now restored and re released on Blu-ray. Two high school boys live on an island, one day a new girl is enrolled in their school....you see where this is going. Nice meandering story.
Subtitled only, no dub track.

To see this movie finally get a release here in the states totally blindsided me. I never heard of it until close to its Blu-ray release! A sweet sort of love story alongside growing pains of course is recipe for a possibly amazing work of art! It absolutely blew my expectations out of the water!

This movie was very enjoyable if you like slower-paced dramas. It's admittedly not at the level of Miyazaki's films, but it's still worthy of Studio Ghibli.
This is a great coming of age movie about friendships, relationships, and just growing up. It's worth a watch.

Another Studio Ghibli masterpiece that many thought would never see proper release in the United States. An excellent movie originally made for television, note that this Blu-Ray/DVD release has only English subtitles; there is no English audio track.

Another Studio Ghibli masterpiece!!!! Really great film and story. Only slight downside it and not totally a bad thing but would have been nice to have an option of seeing it in English. There are Subtitles, but that point aside still a great film

Good movie, but I impulse bought it, as I enjoy Studio Ghibli movies, and I didn't realize it's only in Japanese with English subtitles. I'm perfectly fine with that, but the people I watched with weren't expecting that.

Studio Ghibli has done plenty of amazing films, this one was pretty good to say the least. I didn't watch the side film because it didn't interest me, also it felt a bit overpriced for the content included.

I am a HUGE Studio Ghibli fan and have watched if not all the movies they've released then quite a number of them. When I saw this movie I automatically picked it up on that name alone "Studio Ghibli" and was looking forward to it.
The art as expected is quite beautiful well thought out and all around pleasing to the eyes. Granted perhaps not as detailed as other movies but still very nice. The music was nice and went with the story but not really noticeable.
The story...is were it was lacking for me. If you're into an emotionally abusive relationship with a spoiled brat and a guy that could do way better sprinkled with a bro trying to do a solid by not muscling in, yet still liking said brat? Then this is your story.
Not getting to spoiler-ish the movie has two teenage boys that are best friends one finds a girl he likes the other doesn't think much of her till he sees her face to face, but he respects his friend so tries to stay back to give him a shot. The girl in question is a transfer and...having family issues parents are going through a divorce, and she isn't taking it well. From there it just goes down hill and...in my opinion you watch the friend follow the girl around like some puppy which she repeatedly kicks and he keeps coming back for more.
The school year ends they graduate...and things didn't end well. Then you meet them again grown up and well...the ending was, for me, roll your eyes and I'm hitting the stop button.
I was rather let down by the story line and interaction of the characters. The ending felt like a pleasing of the masses that want happy endings, though honestly a good part of the movie felt like that. Personally, this is that rare Studio Ghibli movie that can actually be skipped.
