Loads of Fun!
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The Oculus Rift S has been a hit in my household. My kids, 8-13 yrs old, are having a blast with this. I have never used a VR headset before so I didn't really know what to expect as far as setup goes. It couldn't have been easier. Once you download the Oculus software on your PC it walks you through absolutely everything. After some firmware updates you are ready to go. They have a built in app that basically takes you through some training to get acquainted with the headset, and they did a great job with this. For first timers, this is a must. The build quality of the Oculus is excellent. It is also comfortable to wear and it even works with my eyeglasses. I was worried that I would have to put my contacts in every time but the headset fit right over them! Overall I have had no issues with playing games, setup or build quality. It has been a smooth experience so far. They walk you through everything and it is just flat out fun! If you are in the market for a VR headset you certainly can't go wrong with this one.

A lot of fun, but limited content
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I'm a first-person shooter gamer and have played for so long that the screen in front of me was where I see the game play out. With the Oculus Rift S, I was immersed in the virtual world. Not watching it, but participating in it. Installation was very straightforward. Just download and run the installer - it walks you through everything including putting the batteries into the hand controllers. The downside is content. It is quite limited. Oculus is banking on that changing, so we'll see. But for now, I'd check out the content and make your own decision as to whether you want to spring for a $400+ VR setup.

The time is VR
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I've used many VR headsets in the past, and the Rift S is the first headset that I feel is ready for the masses and VR Prime Time. While I found a few hiccups, it provided the best experience for PC VR. With that, I think with the Rift S, that VR is ready for consumers. Getting the Rift S set up was relatively easy. All it required was a USB and a DisplayPort cable. This is actually a departure from past headsets that required an HDMI, so you have to be aware of that! The resolution of the ocular screens is high enough that the screen-door effect that has plagued past headsets is not noticeable. I have paired the Rift S with an RTX 2080, which is plenty powerful enough for the VR experience, you have to make sure that your rig can support the headset. The standout feature to me for the Rift S, is the exclusion of the lighthouse towers for tracking. Even without them, the Rift S tracks nearly perfectly! I have found the Rift S to be quite comfortable for extended play sessions. Controllers are quite nice and light. I like the head band design and the method to tightening the and against my head. The ability to use the front cameras to see whats around is nice as well. In conclusion, the Rift S delivers stunning visuals and great motion tracking which culminates to a high-fidelity VR Experience. It just requires a rig powerful enough to drive the headset.

Blown away, highly recommend
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. In the interest of full transparency, this was my first VR headset. However, I have been completely blown away. Whether this is your first headset or you're upgrading from a previous oculus or smart phone VR headset you will not be disappointed in my opinion. Although I cannot compare this to the smartphone version, based on the specifications and capabilities of the rift S I would recommend this person. Since I've received this headset I've logged in at least 50 hours of rigorous testing in and gaming and video scenarios. Each step of the way I have been pleasantly surprised of the capabilities and design of the oculus rift S. Design: the headset itself comes in a nice matte black. It looks good however it doesn't feel like $500. It's well constructed in the headset adjustments to fit your head work well. Unfortunately, it doesn't exuding luxury feel. It's easily adjustable and can accommodate large or small head sizes as well as glasses. I do wish the attached cord was longer. When you're using a PC powered headset it's not uncommon to have your Tower located away from an open area. Microsoft should have thought this through and included a 15 to 20 foot cord. Fortunately, the length of the cord is decent enough as well as the quality of the cord. It does not tangle very easily and allows for freedom of movement. There are many people who complain about having to have an attached cord VR headset. There are claims that this detracts from the ultimate VR experience. However, I have found this not to be true whatsoever. The headset itself feels heavy when you pick it up but when appropriately placed on the head and inside the VR environment, I don't even realize it's there. The included controllers come in a matching Matte black. I am highly disappointed that Microsoft did not include a rechargeable feature with these controllers. This is an inexplicable design failure. Overall, the controllers are lightweight and feel good in my hands. They have lanyards to prevent the controller from falling out of your hand accidentally. There have been reports of people dropping the controllers and the tracking ring breaking. Fortunately,I have not experienced this and I hope I never will. Set up: takes about 15 minutes from download to up and running. The Included instructions are poor and not very instructive. You need to go to the oculus website and download the software to your PC. Once you've installed the oculus software setup is very straightforward. It is recommended that you have at least a 3' x 3' area to operate the VR environment. It will let you know that some applications recommend a 7' x 7' area. Not much to say here overall. You connect the headset to your PC via USB and display port. Included in the box is a mini display port to display port adapter. VR: one thing at did not realize and I think it's important for every new VR user to realize is that you're not going to see the 4K, Full HD, or even HD Quality that we are so used to. VR displays have gone leaps and bounds over the last few years but they are not at the level of HD quality just yet. So to be honest, initially I was slightly disappointed. How are once I realize this and started engaging in more gaming environment I realize this does not matter. When you're in the VR environment it is completely immersive. The headset has built-in audio or you can choose to connect your own headset via an auxiliary port on the headset. I have not even bothered to use my own headset at this point. I have been very surprised with the level of audio quality and effects produced by the headset sound itself. As a wannabe audiophile, I can truly attest to the immersive sound produced by this headset. I have tested out lone echo, dream coaster, arcade games, Mission launch, etc. It is unbelievable how this headset is able to completely transport you out of this world and into the VR environment. I truly feel like I'm living in Star Wars. Many of the games are quite reasonably priced and well developed. You can spend as little as five dollars on arcade games or from $20-$40 on fully developed games such as lone Echo. There is zero lag between the headset and the controllers. Much of this will depend on how well-developed the game is as well as your supporting PC. I have my oculus rift S hooked up to an Alienware Aurora desktop. I have way more power than this headset requires. Therefore, I can't attest to how well this will perform with the minimum requirements. VR video: when viewing VR videos such as those capturing the environment, cities, etc you begin to notice some of the greater limitations of the reduced display quality that limits VR. It's much harder to tell when you're playing animated games. On the flipside, the immersion is just as great. There are tons of VR videos out there you can play either through oculus video or many other apps that you may download to the oculus store. Oculus store: easy to navigate and has many options. This will be a base station when you start up your VR headset. Sales are going on all the time and there are some decent free options. If you really want to enjoy this headset you will need to buy apps. Conclusion: I highly recommend this to anyone looking for their first VR headset or if you're upgrading. The immersion in audio integration built into the headset is phenomenal. You literally transport out of the real world into the environment displayed on this headset. I'd really do not have any complaints I'm very happy with the product overall. Microsoft should really have included a rechargeable option into the controllers for the system. In addition I would have liked to have seen a longer cord length. Aside from that, get out there and buy yourself an oculus rift S and join me and 3019.

Unbelievable VR experience! Mind BLOWN!
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Having researched VR gear a great deal I decided on grabbing the Oculus Rift S for my first VR headset, and boy am I glad I did! Setup was simple, if you can download a app and click "Ok" you can install the Oculus Rift S. Their setup app goes through everything in detail, firmware update, play area fence (which is freakin awesome BTW), tutorials (which are freakin awesome BTW) etc etc. My oldest son and I wear glasses and had absolutely ZERO issues with fitment. My wife and youngest son being blessed with good eyes had ZERO issues with fitment either. The word of the night was WOW! And that was just using the tutorials, it upgraded to more colorful words when we started playing actual games, mainly the Oculus home and Onward. Having never tried VR, I had concerns about motion sickness, everyone experienced none at all. Controls were intuitive and were quickly mastered, my wife spent a hour throwing paper airplanes and stacking blocks, lol. The sound quality was surprisingly good, I had expected to want to use headphones but the built-in speakers sound great! I have a pretty decent gaming rig, I7, 16 gb, 1080 etc. And of course it runs great on it, however I wanted to put a PC in my living room to have more room and to be more accessible for my family. I put together one using a I3, 8gb and 1070, happily it works perfectly with the Rift. Load times are a little longer, as expected, but other than that its great! I can move the headset from PC to PC with zero issues. Being my first VR headset I cant speak to using the tracking towers that some come with, i.e. the Index, but the inside out tracking is precise and easy to deal with, actually its a no brainer with the Oculus setup. Aiming with scopes in Onward was easily done, shooting the bow was natural as well. I bought this to use with flight sims and racing sims, with the total coolness of just the Oculus home and the few games we have tried, I dont think I will be wheels up or hammer down anytime soon, much content to be explored! I'm sure im missing some things, but I hope this helps your decision process. I was excited to get one, im more excited now just to use it! Thanks Oculus you have a new family of VR junkies!

Great Gen 1.5 VR headset; Worthy upgrade from CV1
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.First, where I'm coming from: - I own the Rift CV1 (3 sensor setup) - My IPD (InterPupillary Distance) is 68mm - It should say "Verified Purchase" next to my review. IMO, only consider reviews that have the verified purchase (as to filter out trolls) Second: - If you're having setup issues. 1) Verify you have Webcams/Cameras enabled in the Win10 Privacy Settings 2) Verify you have USB power management disabled in the Win10 power settings Review: The Rift S is awesome! Coming from a Rift Cv1 3 sensor setup I can verify the God Rays are greatly reduce (80% less), Screen Door Effect greatly reduced with the LCD RGB layout (3 subpixels) over the older OLED Pentile layout (2 pubpixels). The image is just so clear, and the "haze" from distant objects is now gone, you can actually focus on objects. The headset cable is 1 meter longer, and a lot more heavy duty. Tracking is responsive and has a pretty large tracking volume: I played Echo Combat, Dead&Buried 2, SKyrimVR, Onward just fine. This is a real upgrade over my 3 sensor CV1 Rift and I have no desire to go back (in fact I'm going to sell my old Rift now that I have the S). Setup: - Wow, it's just so easy! Plug it in, you watch a few videos, you paint your playspace through the Passthrough+ and you're ready to go. I was up and ready to go within 5 minutes. So easy and slick. No more running cables for sensors, no more USB bandwidth issues. Tracking: - Very responsive with a large tracking volume, but probably a notch below the 3 sensor setup (since you can lose controller tracking if it's way behind your head or back). However, it's a definite upgrade over 2 sensors. I noticed a few hiccups in Onward (w/o stock), but the devs ensured they're releasing an update to address this. Beat Saber is on point, I'm able to perform as well as a 3 sensor setup. Plus, tracking with the Oculus Insight tracking should improve over time. I'm personally not worried about the tracking. The Out of the Box room-scale is awesome. The max playspace of the Rift-S is about 20-25 ft; whereas the old CV1 is only about 10 ft. The more than 2x playspace support makes the S worth it. Sound: - definite step back here, but not as bad as people give the impression of. You can hear the game music and chat in games. It's adequate but a headphones addon would be greatly appreciated. Build Quality - On par with the Rift CV1. Both headsets are mainly plastic. The S comes with a much heavier duty cable (which I like); this will help prevent the cable from getting damage when playing. It feels like a premium product. Optics: - WOW!! WOW!! It's just so clear ! Yes, it's only 1440p display, but the greater pixel density with the LCD RGB panel makes everything so clear. (RGB = 3 subpixels per pixel; Pentile = 2 subpixel per pixel) - Rift S = LCD RGB, Rift CV1 = OLED Pentile. The clarity really helps when playing games like Onward, allowing your to see more distant objects. That "haze" on far away objects is now gone. Eye Glasses: - YES! You can wear eye glasses with the S. It features a larger Eye Box and Eye Relief mechanism. The older CV1 was not friendly to eye glass wearers. Comfort: - So is the big clunky halo worth it? Yup! Yes, very comfy and no more face pressure. The combo of the Halo + Top strap make the comfort a real winner. The halo also has THICK comfy padding. The comfort improvement is another reason I'm not going back to the CV1. Controllers: - I like the older Touch models better (more weight, had a sturdier feel), but the new Touch controllers are just as functional. Overall: - I'm very happy with the S and there's no way I'm going back to the old Rift Cv1. If in doubt go try a demo of the Rift S. PS - those saying to pick the old Rift CV1 or old Vive are imo being disingenuous or not accepting to change. The S has SOOO many improvements over the older headsets. There's no way I'm going back to the old Rift CV1.

Best VR headset with update 1.39
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The Rift S is my daily driver and my favorite headset. Here's why... 1- Better than the quest: the quest is a great wireless mobile unit. However it's limited power, locked down upcharged app store and poor 4 camera placement make the S the easy win 2- Better than the original rift and vive: hands down, I can't go back to that screen door effect look and lower resolution of the 1st wave units, plus since the 1.39 rift S improved tracking update the S is an easy win again 3- Better than the vive pro. The vive pro controllers are awful, the headphones and mic are even worse. It is buggy and crashes often. Visuals are great but the S wins again, however not by that much, but the pro is 3x more so, no brainer 4- Better than all mixed reality headsets, even the odyssey. WMR is just not a great VR option, from cameras to comfort to controllers S wins 5- Better than the Valve index. Yep I said it. I do know VR is a personal experience. No two heads are the same. For me the god Ray's, glare during black screens and tiny tiny sweet spot of the index makes the Rift S the crowning champion. In addition the touch controllers feal better than the index controllers to me

nice hardware and setup, but where are the games?
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Rift-S is not a bad VR Headset by any means, and as far as wired, tethered VR Headsets go, setup on this one is actually really easy. Before you buy anything, go to the oculus website, and download the PC app to determine if your PC can actually work with this headset. You need to have a DisplayPort in order to use this. If you have a computer, laptop or desktop, gaming rig, that doesn’t have that port, you will not be able to get it to work on that system. The app will help those less technically inclined, have a displayPort capable machine, a USB 3 port, and that their video card is enough to drive he Rift-S. Ok, back to setup. They really thought this through. You basically download their oculus app, and they walk you through plugging it in, putting in batteries, and, setting up an account with them, and keep in mind Oculus in now a Facebook company, will try to get you to link a Facebook account. It seems like they are trying to get people to game with other Facebook friends. I did not do this, it is possible to not tie a facebook account at all. I personally am a little put off that they would want so much access to my facebook account. I just want to play games personally. I don’t want to share with people my VR experiences, or invite people to play with me. Once you are done with setting up your Oculus account (this is how you buy games from Oculus(facebook) store, they have a part in the walk thru where you put on your googles, and your hand controllers, and setup your “play space”. You literally see thru the googles, what your real environment looks like, and it asks you to draw a line around where your “boundaries” would be for that play space. This is done, so that while playing, games will warn you that you are out of bounds, and don’t accidentally hit walls, trip on something, etc. After you have setup your “play space”, you will go into a bit of a demo on how VR works, and it is pretty entertaining. Grabbing items in a space station with a robot edging you on with what to do with virtual items, like a ping pong ball and paddle, toys, virtual butterflies, etc. It is a pretty cool intro in to their world. One thing on hardware… those built in speakers? Real let down, they are not very good. You will want to get a good set of headphones that you plug in for better immersion. Keep in mind, you might have to find a pair that fit comfortably while you have the Rift-S on. Ok.. so far so good, but here is my biggest gripe, as a hardcore video gamer…. Where is the gaming content? I mean real games, games console gamers would play. Rift-S…. Pretty cool hardware, better “tech” than PSVR, however for hardcore gamers, in my opnion, I think most will be let down, the content, in-terms of AAA titles is just not there yet. For casual gamers, yes, they will love games like Beat Saber and the like. Almost all the games available are very short experiences. Most are like “demos” rather than full experience games. As Facebook is now calling the shots, I suspect we will get more of these more casual games, as they are really seem to be pushing towards getting the masses on board, ie: facebook users, rather than really getting true gamers on board. That is very obvious because they also released the Rift Quest (a different VR headset, which doesn’t need a PC, and totally wireless), though not nearly as powerful as a Rift-S being driven by a decent gaming rig. I really wish they had brought all of that wireless, untethered tech to the Rift-S. It feels a little like the Rift-S are the step-children of the family now.
