Ok...Christmas movies can fall into one of two categories really: 1) Schmaltzy that makes us cry and believe in the magic of the season OR 2) Irreverent that through raunchy humor or scary horror makes FUN of the magic of the season There IS room for both! I like tearing up and going awwwwww as much as the next fella but sometimes you just want to poke a few funny holes in mistletoe, ho ho ho and presents under the tree. So...Office Christmas Party. It features: a) Jennifer Anniston, who is pretty AND funny b) Jason Bateman, who can be hilarious but is inconsistent c) a Reindeer at the office Those three things, along with quite a few other things (naked Xeroxing, rappelling down the side of a skyscraper, office sex, drinking, irreverence, more office sex, etc.) are all thrown into the proverbial blender and the "puree" button is hit. IT's funny, but it also squanders its pretty amazing premise, cast and Reindeer because it's trying to do TOO much and rely TOO much on sex. An office Christmas party gone totally wrong could be comedy gold - this movie isn't it. But it COULD be. And that premise could be sliced and diced so many ways (Die Hard is an office christmas party gone wrong also...) but everyone here was content to accept a paycheck and show up (barely). It's still funny...but it could have been SO MUCH more than it is. That said, sometimes you don't want a masterpiece...you just want to make fun of fruitcake. And eggnog. And this movie does that. So...decide what you want. If you have had ENOUGH of the holidays and need a palate cleanser. This works. IF you want something that can be a true classic (even something like Christmas Vacation), keep looking...
