It was useful right out of the box. You can record either into the device itself or you may use it as a USB recording microphone. Variable speed playback is extremely useful for both my trades as a musician and as a physician; and, it's also useful for loading some language-learning software or recording presentations or lectures. Slow it down or speed it up- your call. If you wanna use this piece for medical dictation, take it home with you. If you wanna use this for very high quality stereo recording, take it home with you. If you're into a lot of MP3/WMA music playing and want to transfer a large library to this device, 512 MB is not enough for your entire library. The DSS software that comes with it allows you to edit what you're recorded. This device talks well wtih Creative, Windows Media software but not as well with iTunes and not at all with AAC-type files. This recorder treats my soprano sax really well, too!
