Quentin doesn’t necessarily make a bad movie to begin with and this one continues to hold truth to that claim.

This review is for the 4K version of the film and as I stated earlier if you’re a fan of Quentin you will not be disappointed. Brad Pitt won an academy award for his performance and after you watch him in this you will see why. Leo as usual is superb the man simply doesn’t seem to make any bad movies for quite sometime now. Visually the movie looks outstanding it was shot on film which is a plus and it shows. Colors have a warm look to it which I prefer personally not a fan of cooler tones. The movie is dialogue heavy so don’t expect the audio to blow you away. It’s 2 and half hours long but doesn’t feel too drawn out in my opinion. Overall a great buy and I highly recommended if your a fan cinema.

It is Quentin Tarantino and it shows the director evolution in story telling. The characters dynamics, the shout-out to times and places long gone show the love the director has for the cradle of the industry that has made him famous. Great performances by Brad Pitt and Leonardo DiCaprio. Their interactions also a nod to the dynamic duos Hollywood used along the years. There is some peeking and poking to the industry. The ending breaks from the reality of what happened and in a way cements it in the Hollywood canon of "good ending", which is somehow satisfying. Really liked it....

This will be a review of the edition of this film, not the film itself. I'm not here to tell you how to feel about Tarantino's latest. The transfer is immaculate, and I dearly hope it is not the last Tarantino film to make it to 4K. Seeing the colors pop thanks to the HDR implementation has me excited to see his other films. There is no better way to experience this film, so provided you have the setup to play it (remember, PS5, and Xbox One S/X and Xbox Series X can play 4K discs), buy this.

    A Misstep for Tarantino

As far as the product itself goes, 4K of course delivers the goods for this film. Picture is sharp, and the few night scenes are crystal clear. As for the film itself, I must say I am disappointed in Mr. Tarantino. This did not at all feel like what I have come to expect from him. My issues are primarily threefold: 1) Plot. Every Tarantino film has had some kind of through plot to which all subplots connect well and are layered masterfully. This film lacks any real plot. Some may say that it is the aging Rick and Cliff making their way through a new Hollywood, but that’s just a setting and context. Some may say that it’s the Cielo Dr Murders, but that’s at best a tacked on subplot. Every other Tarantino film is fairly easy to summarize the plot of. Trying to summarize this film is nearly impossible, partly due to my next point. 2) Historical Context. The biggest problem with this film is that it is made by Hollywood, for Hollywood. A lot of the name and events are staples and icons of Old Hollywood, but are not well known by the public at large today. Most people aren’t familiar with Sharon Tate, or Polanski, or even the Manson Murders other than knowing that Charles Manson was a crazy killer. The film presumes a vast amount of knowledge on the part of the viewer to really truly understand and comprehend what is going on. A passing knowledge will get you through a good bit, but not all. 3) Tarantino Violence. You can’t have a Tarantino film without over-the-top violence. But that was a problem here. The violence felt like it was there simply because it is Tarantino and expected. But the issue here was that for the first time in my opinion, Tarantino was truly gratuitous and pointless in his violence. It was brutal, but not in any clever way we have come to expect. It was also greatly pointless. All other Tarantino fights have in some way served the greater plot, driven the story, or developed character. Here, it did none of the above (see point 1). It felt out of place, random, and honestly the film probably would’ve been better without a great deal of it, if not all of it. I know that this film is really popular with critics, and with fans, but I do believe this is a case of Hollywood getting the feels over a movie about Hollywood, and fans parroting it because Tarantino is reliably great. But I think in this case, Hollywood is blinded by its own glittery past, and fans need to realize that Tarantino can actually let us down.

I really loved this movie. It gives a look at how Hollywood was like back then. I thought their was a really great cast and crew and a lot of great performances. I thought the plot of the movie in general was really good and interesting. This movie was very entertaining to watch and without a doubt another one of the best movies of the year and one of the greatest movies of Quentin Tarantino that you can add to the list of all the other movies he’s directed.

Tarantino is a product of Los Angeles and here he’s able to express his love for the city and its kooky inhabitants to the fullest. Image is a bit darker than I think it probably should be, but otherwise colors are vivid and film grain is well-preserved. The 7.1 mix is solid, tho surprising they didn’t include the Atmos mix that was created for theatrical (Tho they didn’t include thIs Dolby vision for the disc either)

My wife and I spent 10 years in Santa Monica, where entertainment rules the roost. So many arrive from small towns nation-wide, but only a handful make it. The vast majority live in low-rent housing and work in restaurants, hoping to be discovered. Finally, when a wrinkle is discovered or the person gets too full of themselves, it’s over. All that is to say that this movie does a great job of depicting it!
