I had to switch the receiver out because the sound would stop while I was watching something, got a new one and does the exact same thing. I'm going to have to disconnect it again and I won't be trying another one of these.

We will not purchase this item ever again, had to exchange this 2 times and finally gave up and purchased a different unit. We will read the review from now on before making a purchase on a big ticket item....

I bought as an open box buy. When I got it home it would not turn on at all. Quite frustrating to move all the wires and then back. So in fairness I can't say how it sounded or worked, because it didn't.

A okay unit for basic 7.1 surround. If you can live with basic car stereo (no upgrade or premium systems) then this unit is fine. Otherwise, purchase a better unit (like I did).

Product nonfunctional because protective setup code could not be removed (according to Geek squad team member).

We bought a receiver, and then it decided to break. So, we brought it in, and when they couldn't fix it we had to replace it. HOWEVER, since we had bought the original receiver on sale, we had to find a replacement that was "worth" the sale price. So, we had to replace the broken $500 (valued) receiver with one valued at about $250. Disappointing service for sure.

PROS: - 7.1 Channel - Connection Upconversion (for example Wii doesn't have HDMI output but this will convert to HDMI so receiver only needs one TV video output), - 3D passthrough - On Screen display for setup CONS: - Sound Quality - No DSP Modes - No equalizer - Only front speakers have banana Plugs - Dolby Atmos only works with 2.1 or 5.1 (have to convert one of the Surround Middle or Surround Back speaker terminals to a 'height' speaker as Atmos speakers require their own distinct speaker wire. Though to be fair this is true on most receivers until you get into the high end.) This unit is in comparison to my 2001 model JVC RX-8000VBK, which I am finally upgrading after 15 years to a 7.1 system. However, the sound quality of this Onkyo is not as good as my old receiver, so I will stick with what I have for now and let the 2 Surround Middle speakers be for decoration. I am returning this unit due to the lack of adjustments available for surround sound - as my primary use for this is for a home theater. I used the microphone to setup the system and tried many manual adjustments following, but I could not get a good mix of speech to sound effects. The center speaker is too muted and too much bass and mid are pushed to the front speakers. There seems to be a gap between the mid and the upper end, or speech/treble (again in comparison to my other receiver) with no way to adjust it. The only adjustment I could find for this was to turn up the db level for each speaker and change speaker size, but to no avail. There is no equalizer and no DSP listening mode adjustment (such as Theater, Musical, Hall, Night Mode, etc) that I could find. Further, instead of system automatically selecting best listening mode, it seemed like I had to manually select the listening mode (Dolby TrudHD, DTS, etc) and the on display text is not clear on what you are selecting. The 'advanced manual' which is neither advanced nor provided, is found online here: http://www.onkyo.com/manual/txsr444/adv/en/index.html. What I would call standard features are truly as limited as this 'advanced' manual. The speaker did automatically shut-off on me once. When I powered it back on it performed a self-test and told me to check speaker wiring. Sure enough, one of the banana plugs was loose, so I thought this was pretty cool. I was using this in a very large theater room (~3000 cubic feet) and it was as much power as I would need for theater sound with my polk audio monitor series II speakers. Again the issue was not power, it was that the sound effects were overpowering in comparison to the dialogue. I did try a different center speaker (and compared to my old receiver), but the problems seems to lie in how each channel is being processed. I did use this to watch a couple 3D movies and the passthrough worked just fine. I did not test any 4K. I also did not test my Wii on upconversion. I could go on, but I'm trying to be concise. I just LOVE reviews that highlight everything from the events of the day the person got the package to every support phone call they ever made. I didn't hate the receiver, it just wasn't up to the challenge of replacing an older receiver (that provides most of what this one is missing except the microphone setup and the 7.1). If you are looking for a simple budget receiver, then this one may fit the bill. If you find the sound quality lacking as I did then return it.

Worked fine for around 6 months. One might, went to go watch a movie and it didn't work anymore. Had a lot of intermittent static and couldn't get it to work any more. Not buying an Onkyo again.

Great introductory level surround sound amplifier.

This unit is used to power 4 in-wall speakers and does that great. There is lots of room to add a center soundbar and a subwoofer, which I will do in the future. The onboard configuration options are numerous and plenty! I would recommend this unit to anyone needing a surround sound amp that won't break the bank. Everything I have bought that is made by Onkyo is great.

    Onkyo TX-SR444

Upgraded my Yamaha AVR to Onkyo TX-SR444. Not really an entry level AVR but not quite a mid level either, it falls in a category somewhere in between. Since I already have a Roku, I did not need a wi-fi connection found on higher end units to stream music. Easy set-up, simple to use, and good user interface. I am running Klipsch R-15M's with a Sony powered subwoofer. Works perfectly with my set-up. Produces powerful, room filling, clear, high quality sound.
