Customers are saying

Customers are enthusiastic about the sound quality, ease of use, and Bluetooth connectivity of the TX 7.2-Ch. Hi-Res Network-Ready 4K Ultra HD and 3D Pass-Through A/V Home Theater Receiver. Many also appreciate the receiver's powerful performance and the extensive features it offers at its price point. However, some users experienced issues with the volume level requiring higher settings to achieve satisfactory sound, and others reported difficulties with the ARC functionality. The receiver's size was also noted as a potential drawback by a few customers.

I specifically chose this unit as it was one of the few in my price range (especially at the sale price) that included dedicated phono jacks. My old receiver (as in 25 years old!) didn't have HDMI etc. This unit gave me the opportunity to pull together some older audio equipment with newer video. It was super easy to set up and comes with a mic to calibrate automatically - awesome for a non-techy like me!

I had to replace my Yamaha receiver that crapped out on me the morning of the NCAA Wrestling Championships. Raced over to Best Buy and was going to go with a comparable Yamaha but this Onkyo was on sale. After discussion with the sales person he helped me to conclude that this was more than enough power and functionality for my set-up and I have to agree... it sounds great with my Bose 5.1 surround sound system and has a number of really nice features such as Airplay compatibility, room set-up via a microphone, etc.

Bought this to upgrade my old Yamaha receiver because it did not 4k or 3d pass through and was able to use it with the speakers from that Yamaha system. I bought it open box and it didn't bring a remote, however the app is very easy to use and a life saver. I read other reviews stating the app had issues staying linked but I haven't had any connection issues. It has all the latest surround sound technologies including Dolby Atmos and DTS X. Simple interface, great sound.

I was going to buy another unit but after talking with BB guy I went with this one. It sounds good but it was a little tough getting the connections with my smart TV going. In fact I never got the HDMI/DVI working - I ended up having to get another cable to run the sound back from the TV. (of course it could also be a problem with the TV). Also, the connections for speaker wire to the back were hard to get in - it took me several tries (back breaking) to get speakers working in the slots. Now that I'm set up it sounds great.

This is a complex piece of equipment with many functions and features. It can't be fully appreciated in the few weeks I've had it. I can say that the initial set up and inevitable changes are very easy. It is replacing a similar receiver and there is both good and bad in the comparison. They each have their quirks. This one has a very simple remote, with most functions being menu driven while on my other one most functions had a dedicated button. My two main pet peeves so far are the sleep timer and zone 2. You have to go about 5 pages into a menu to set the sleep timer and turning on zone 2 requires pushing two buttons at the same time and therefore requires two hands. Very awkward. Otherwise I'm very satisfied with the operation and most importantly, the sound. It has a slew of built in DSPs, but only those compatible with the current input signal show on the menu, so the menu is always different. They're not as dramatic as my other receiver since they don't include "church" or "stadium" but I never used those anyway so these more subtle variations may be more useful in the long run. All in all, a good product for the price, since I bought it on a major markdown.

We've had this receiver for about a month now, and it's worked great. Easy set up. Make sure you have banana plugs on your speaker wires. It would be hard to tie in bare wires as space is tight. We had a previous model of Onkyo receiver for years and only upgraded so we'd be 4K proof whenever we upgrade our tv. Great value for what it does. If you just need a receiver for your living room tv and basic 5.1 (or 7.2) speaker set up, this is perfect. Nice layout to the remote.

I purchased this for use in our bedroom hence didn't need anything higher priced. Purchased on sale at a great price, already had speakers set up from a previous outdated (non 4K) system. The menu driven setup was easy to follow including WiFi. The included microphone enabled for the receiver to automatically set the individual speaker levels for best surround sound.

Straightforward and easy to use, easily recognized by my smart home, puts out a lot of power. I just wish the inputs on the remote were labeled HDMI1, 2, etc., instead of device names (would be easier to remember) and that the remote used frequency transmittal instead of RF. But those aren't deal breakers.

I bought this for my mom along with a pair of Polk T15 speakers for Christmas. She had a crappy old boombox that sounded terrible so this was a major upgrade and useful for her music in her sun room via channel 2 while upgrading her surround sound in her family room on the primary channel. For the price, this Onkyo provides excellent sound and good features.

I got this unit on sale and this reciever is great for the price. My very first reciever and it is loaded with features but, the most important ones for me was Doby Atmos and DTS X compatibility along with the 4K and HDR pass through. I have a 5.1.2 atmos setup and it's fantastic. I wish I would have went 5.2.4 but, as a novice I wanted to get familiar with an less expensive setup. I am now hooked and will be upgrading in the furture.

So far I'm very happy with this Onkyo receiver - it basically does everything as advertised in its specs and works well. Easy setup & lots of input/output flexibility; music and movies sound great, even with my not so great current speakers. My current speaker setup is a pair of circa 2003 Yamaha bookshelves, a Sony center, Sony powered sub & pair of Sony surround speakers that came with a circa 2003 Sony "home theater in a box" system.

So, it's not the easiest set up, but otherwise it is a fantastic receiver. Packed with functions. Once it's set up it's a breeze to use and to get fabulous sound. I have it driving a Dolby Atmos system, and it sounds like a dream. Totally immersive Dolby Atmos sound, but even with just regular Dolby Surround or All Stereo (which is how I play my music) it delivers excellent sound to speakers.

There's really not much to say negative about this receiver. It fit the bill of everything I was looking for - something to support my 5.1.2 Atmos setup, HDR/Dolby Vision support, and HiFi DAC support. After living with this receiver for 1.5 years, the biggest drawback for me has been the mobile app for this Rx - it is way too simplistic and is basically for just streaming music. There is no reason whatsoever that Onkyo cannot put the full setup menu into the mobile app (like Vizio does with their TV's). This would enable users to make more on-the-fly adjustments such as crossover levels or equalization adjustment. The other big negative is there is no full-range RCA preout, only subwoofer preout. This is quite frustrating if you are trying to hookup an external source that wants to pull the audio, such as wireless headphones. Overall, the sound quality is impressive. It's not the most powerful Rx, but it does the job powering my setup with modest size drivers (dual 6 1/2" on each front channel). Build quality is terrific and feels like a premium product. One other small request, I wish there was an extra mode where I could control exclusively which speakers to turn and off in an all stereo/mono feature. For instance, at night time I'd only have the Atmos speakers (located directly above the couch) on as to keep the audio to the lowest levels while being able to hear it clearly.

I haven’t had the surround sound work for a few years. Great to have it back. Had a problem with the ARC turning the receiver back on but the problem was quickly resolved with a call to customer support. The biggest problem is everything wants to be smart - TV, receiver, Blu-ray player, etc. One smart device is enough.
