Beware monthly charge

I think I will like the Ooma service. I give this three stars because I will be charged $14.99 per month starting when I activated it (plus taxes and fees of about another $7.50). After seeing the charge on my credit card, I called the Ooma representative and according to them there is no way to use this particular device bundle with their free plan or even their $9.99/month Premier Plan (both plus fees). It's not clear to me what I'm getting for $14.99+/month that I wouldn't get with different hardware and their $9.99+/month plan other than a free number porting (i.e. keeping my old land line number) that is otherwise a one-time fee of $49.
Their materials say you can plug it in and get a dial tone within about 15 minutes. That may be true, but if you want to understand all the features and set up the ones you want for two phone lines plus make privacy choices, allow hours. I found the internet interface to be clunky. Your mileage may vary.
Nonetheless, at about $22.50/month I'm saving $100/month from my old landline provider and more if I ultimately use the second line feature. The voice quality seems good and I do have features I didn't previously have.
I've read elsewhere that some buyers complain that you can only cancel your Ooma plan by calling them and they're hard to reach. I do object to digital subscriptions that cannot be cancelled online. However, I was able to quickly reach an Ooma representative by phone to answer my billing question, so hopefully when cancellation day comes that won't be an issue.
Although I mark this review as "I wouldn't recommend this item", that's only because of the mandatory monthly charge and the fact that basic users could get a better deal with other hardware for a reduced or zero monthly charge plus fees. For my home office needs, I'm not unhappy I bought it.
