I really liked X so I pre-ordered Pearl without hesitation and I was not disappointed. Mia Goth is brilliant as the titular character, providing an exceptional portrayal of the emotional volatility of the sociopathic mind. Unlike the gritty dreariness of X, colors here are bright and pop beautifully in high-definition. There are many scenes throughout the film that conjure images of a very twisted version of Oz...as Pearl rides her bike to and fro I found myself thinking, "I'll get you my little pretty and your little dog too!" My only gripe is that without the sequel, Pearl comes across as a woman who's been driven mad by the loss of her beauty and youth. But in the sequel we learn that she's always been wacky and violent. I kind of preferred the story in X because I thought it shared an important message about how women perceive themselves in a social world that values aesthetic perfection above all else. But Mia Goth was so darn good in this, I just enjoyed it for what it was!
