    Creepy French supernatural thriller

To be honest, I didn't expect this film to be a supernatural thriller, but it basically is. A French film by Olivier Assayas, but filmed in English, starring Kristen Stewart who gives another excellent performances since starring in Assayas' other acclaimed film The Clouds of Sils Maria. Interesting how Stewart is much derided in America and mocked as an actress. These two french films managed to unlock her talents and she does not disappoint. Granted she is still sullen and monotone.... but it fits her role and she gives it surprising depth and substance. I won't spoil the plot...it's worth letting unravel on it's own. Suffice to say that Stewart plays an American in Europe, working as a personal assistant, and is undergoing an existential crisis of identity which plays out in a story that seems to take the supernatural world as granted. Or does it? Originally booed at Cannes, and then won Best Director, this is one of those films that will suck you in, keep you engrossed, make you ask questions, and then leaves you thinking...or for some...scratching their heads. Not a conventional Hollywood movie by any means, but a slow burn & very modern take on a metaphysical genre. Excellent film, which requires you to be focused and pensive during the viewing. Its not fast, nor is it furious - its thoughtful and engaging.

Not a bad movie if you're a fan of Kristen Stewart

I read some reviews on IMDB that suggested that "Americans" won't like this movie because it doesn't wrap everything up in a neat little package for you by the end of the story. I was insulted by this comment. There have been a lot of good movies that had ambiguous endings. But this movie doesn't just fail to wrap everything up - it doesn't really answer *any* of the questions it poses. This movie has an ambiguous begining, middle part, and ending too, heh. So be prepared for that if you buy it. Much of the story is kind of implied in places, and thus open to interpretation. This IS a ghost story, no question about that. That's about the only thing certain. And... people like me who find Kristen Stewart to be incredibly attractive will appreciate a couple of the scenes in particular, heh. Some people say she can't act, but I've never really understood that. She does a fine job here, as far as I'm concerned, but some folks might not like the *character* that much. She's kind of sullen and disillusioned throughout the film. Watching this movie is a little bit like... listening to an acquaintance tell you her ghost stories in such a way that you actually believe them. (That is, IF you had an acquaintance who happened to travel around Europe's fashion meccas buying expensive costumes for a famous model and trying to figure out whether or not she believes in ghosts.) Just as when someone you know tells a story about something that happened to him or her once, there isn't necessarily a well-planned story arc. There isn't any kind of resolution to THIS story at all except to know for sure that ghosts are real in it. Did you ever see that movie The Ninth Gate? This is a little bit like that, but not as good. But like that movie, there's not much of an ending here either. I would recommend this to a friend who likes Kristen Stewart, but I'm not sure I'd recommend it to anyone else. Maybe French people, LOL.

The movie is fantastic and Criterion has really outdone themselves with this one. The picture is crisp, the sound is incredible. It's great all around.
