I have the original MGM released DVD, which had some nice extras but the audio and (non-anamorphic) picture quality left a lot to be desired. To be honest I haven't watched the other discs yet so can not critique their quality. But the original movie has flat out never looked better. Remastered by the director Don Coscarelli with a whole lot of help from JJ Abrams' Bad Robot team, this reatoration is clearly a labor of love that includes an immersive and never distracting Atmos mix. Worth the price just for the first movie, the fact that you get the entire series (with Phantasm II also getting an Atmos mix) is the icing on an already tasty cake. The one negative is the packaging. Granted for the price you should assume a bare bones package, but the fact that the discs are stacked on top of each other (first two movies on the left side of case, 3-5 are on the right) means that you have to shuffle discs around unless the ones you want to watch happen to be at the top of the stack. But hey, at least every movie gets its own disc for maximum AV quality. If youre a fan of the series or interested in the more iconic 70s era horror fipms, this series is a no-brainer.
