Great Shaver, Questionable Secondary Functions
|

This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.
The shaver, as a shaver, does a great job of clearing the hair, but some of the secondary functions don’t work as well.
My preference is a rotary shaver and this fits that bill perfectly. It shaves very close to the point where you can’t really see any hair. It is very smooth and easy to move around. The trimmer is a separate head where you must remove the main head and attach the trimmer head. Exchanging it was easy. You just rotate the head an eighth of a turn, pull out and push in the other head. One thing that is not convenient and is kind of a problem is that the trimmer is a second head and not something that you can just pop out like most other shavers. This is probably the worst feature of this. This means if you want to quickly use it on a small area, you must change the head instead of popping it out. This is more work than it should be. Speaking of attachments, you only get a trimmer. There is an LED indicator around the head that shows if you are pressing too hard, not hard enough, or just right. I found that it is very difficult to keep the shaver at the correct pressure and was constantly changing color. Maybe I just need more practice. It also tells you if you are shaving in a circle correctly. This was much easier to accomplish. Cleaning it is a matter of popping up the head and rinsing it under water. It couldn’t be easier.
The battery takes around 1 hour to fully charge. Each 3-minute shave takes around 5% of the battery so you get plenty of shaves for each charge. The charging cable is USB on one end and a proprietary connection on the other end. You therefore must take the special cable with you everywhere instead of using a standard USB cable. Not sure why this can’t just use a standard USB cable but that is how it is designed. You get a charging pod that uses the same special cable to connect it to the wall. The charging pod allows you to place the shaver on it to change. I don’t think this is so useful you can just plug the charging cable straight into it.
You get a hard case with it that fits the shaver, trimmer accessory, and charging cable easily. This protects everything well and allows you to travel with everything.
There is a fancy color display on it that essentially shows you the charge level and the current shave mode. It looks nice. You can also connect it to an app on your phone. It took several tries to try to get the app to connect to the shaver since it didn’t prompt me to connect via Bluetooth but after a bunch of tries, it did eventually work. The app is simple. It tells you if you are pressing too hard or soft, rotating correctly, and if you are taking too long to shave and irritate your skin. You also get an overall score at the end. Since there is a color indicator on the head, I don’t think the app is necessary.
Overall, the shaver works excellently as a shaver and gives you the closest shave. The trimmer works well. Having to switch between the mean head and trimmer is the worst part about it compared with a traditional pop-out trimmer. The indicator that tells you if you are applying the correct pressure is a good idea, but it is very difficult to constantly stay at the right pressure. It comes with a very nice case. The app is really unnecessary.

I’ve been due for a new set of blades in my electric razor, what better way to get new blades than to treat myself with a new top of the line Philips Norelco I9000 Prestige Ultra instead. I don’t have thick or heavy facial hair, and have always used the budget line Philips Norelco’s.
Removed from the packaging, you’ll find the razor itself, a nice carry case, the charging stand with a USB cable (you will need to provide your own USB charger). There is also a trimmer attachment along with some instructions on use and registering the razor.
First steps, get the shaver charged fully. The charging stand is nice and sturdy without being cumbersome.
Not sure if or why I need/want to put an app on my phone for my shaver, but I did to check it out. The app does provide some good information, battery condition (shaves remaining). Shaving head condition is noted. You also get historical or live data on how well you are using your shaver (pressure, motion and duration). Interesting data up front while I’m ‘learning’ to use a quality shaver, but long term I don't really see myself checking the app every day to make sure I’m making my shaving circles and pressure just right, and shaving for the right amount of time.
Now for what everyone wants to know, how well does it shave? Well.. I have to say.. After using it for almost a week now, and following the guidance on pressure, rotation, time, the shave it gives me is probably the closest and smoothest shave I’ve ever had. It is taking me a bit to get used to holding the I9000 Prestige Ultra, it is shaped differently than my prior lower end model. Not that it’s shaped bad, I like it, easy to hold and handle, just different. There is a LED light ring on the shaver itself that will tell you if you are shaving properly, just shoot for keeping that ring green. The shaver also has a led display on it. It will greet you in the morning, tells you which mode you are on, battery percentage, and time of your last shave.
Cleanup is simple, just press the latch button on the head to dump the whiskers and rinse under running water.
At the end of the day, this shaver does an excellent job with its number one task, giving me a close, smooth, comfortable shave. Could I do without the fancy screen, led lights, and app? sure, but it does add to the overall experience. I can’t find any cons other than price, so I have to give this a solid 5 of 5 stars.

My old razor has served me well but has finally reached end-of-life. I have used Norelco products for years so when the Philips i9000 Prestige model was announced I pounced!
The package includes the razor, a proprietary charging cable that attaches to a nice sturdy base, a trimmer attachment and very nice zippered case that provides netted pockets to hold everything in place when I toss it in my travel bag.
Unpacking and getting the shaver ready for first use was a bit of an adventure. Like many new products the i9000 offers an app that connects via blutooth to manage the device. Installing the app was problematic. The app was easily downloaded but it required multiple attempts to get my phone and the app to finally connect! Once installed the configuration was quick and effortless although it really only offers a handful of customizations.
My somewhat cynical opinion on this connectivity is that just because you can blutooth enable a device doesn't mean you should!
Charging was fast via the supplied stand. Be aware that the razor plugs into the base (it is NOT wireless) and that the included case does not have room for the base. No charging brick is provided. The cable connecting the brick to the base is a proprietary USB-A to a two pin connector that plugs into the base. The base has a ring that lights up while charging.
The shaver itself is ergonomically shaped and fits well in my hand. There is a multi-colored LED ring that guides you to optimize your pressure/motion. This is customizable via the app. Not a "must-have" but in practice I think it works fine.
Now, for the part that really matters - the i9000 delivers a fantastic shave! The three floating, pivoting heads allow you to get to those hard-to-reach spots. And, unlike some other electric shavers, I am experiencing NO skin irritation!
Overall, Philips has produced another quality personal grooming product. It's solid construction and excellent shave deserve your consideration.

I’ve had a few Norelco razors over the years and also a few of the bar type razors I received as gifts over the years. But this I9000 Prestige Ultra is not only the best looking of them but provides the best shave. The Prestige is better than any razor I ever had. The color on top of mine was a burnt bronze that faded out at the edge. A very high-end look.
There is an app that allows you to customize the features like the LED lights and reminders. The app is simple to setup.
The Ultra has an LED ring provides guidance. It changes color if you use too much pressure while shaving. By heeding its warnings, it rewarded me with a face smoother than any other used before it without any pain or razor burn. Even a small patch of soft hair that grows curly and wild in one spot on my face. I let my beard grow out five days and fully expected to get some pulling. But surprise, there was no pulling. It did need an extra pass in some spots, but the shave was comfortable with no pulling, yanking, or tugging at all.
The razor speed is adjustable to suit your face comfort. I used Intense which did a great job but did not feel intense at all. There was no noticeable break in period, it worked well right off and was comfortable from day one.
I tried shaving both wet in the shower and with shaving gel, both worked well. I don’t feel a need to use these since it does so well for me dry. But every face is different, and the option is there if needed.
It took a bit over an hour to give it a full charge. Judging by the battery charge left, a full charge should last me 3-4 weeks. It comes with a USB-A cable to charge it. But like most devices these days there is no AC USB charger to cut down on cost and e-waste.
There is a trimmer head included for sideburns and other trimming. Pull the head straight off (no twisting) and push on the trimmer to use. Cleaning is easy. After each shave I open the razor head with the button at the bottom and give it a rinse to flush the hair out. After a rinse, I leave it open to dry.
I highly recommend this great looking and effective shaver.

I’ve been using the i9000 Prestige Ultra for the last week, and have had a positive experience with it. The more I used it and my skin became accustomed to it, the closer the shave got and the less time it took to shave and the less impact there was on my skin.
The i9000 connects via Bluetooth to your smartphone via the Phillips GroomTribe application. I installed the app and logged in (I had an account for a previous shaver) and got started. If you’d prefer not to create an account, I did see a the option to use the app as a guest. I appreciate this from Phillips, as some corporations kind of force you to log in so they can get your information. After installing the app and connecting the shaver to the phone, I was provided with several options, i.e., how I was going to shave, did I have sensitive skin, was I going to use an electric shaver cream, etc. After answering those questions, I got down to shaving. If you have the app open while shaving, you are provided with real time feedback on how hard you are pressing, how long it is taking, and if you are shaving effectively. Nice and all, I suppose, but I pretty much ignored the feedback after a few moments. I’d prefer to watch shaving in the mirror to make sure I was getting everywhere.
The app does give you an idea of head life in percentages. Kind of handy so you know when to swap the head off. The i9000 also comes with a separate attachment that you can pop on in place of the shaver so you can trim the sideburns. If I had one issue with the i9000, it is that the sideburn trimmer wasn’t built into the shaver. Having to swap off the attachments is a hassle, particularly if one is in a hurry.
Other than that, I really enjoyed using the i9000 Prestige Ultra. It provides a smooth, clean shave, has excellent battery life, and comes with a nice charger. Highly recommended for those that prefer an electric shaver over a razor.

A Better Shave Through Better Technology
|

When you think about technology creating a better shave, you go to things like the blades and - in an electric razor like this one - the motor, the flexibility of the shave head and perhaps the battery. And this new i9000 Prestige has those basics covered with the super flexible triple rotary head that Philips Norelco is known for combined with great triple-action lift and cut blades. A slightly smaller head than my last Philips razer lets it flex into countours a bit better and the motor seems to be both more powerful and quieter than my older model. The battery life is fine for many shaves and it's easy to charge using the included USB cable and charging base (though I do wish it came with a USB charging block). The razor is meant to work wet or dry so you can use it how you like in that regard.
So that's all well and good, but the technology that REALLY improves the shave here is a lot more advanced than that. This razor will connect to your phone / the Philips app via Bluetooth which will help you improve your shaving technic (things like the light ring around the razor that tells you when you're putting just the right amount of pressure on it (neither too much nor too little) for an optimal cut. It tracks your shaving motions as well to offer tips on how you can shave for both better results and less irritation. Brilliant!
Of course the razor works without any of that, but if it can help you get a better shaving with less redness / etc. then why wouldn't you? I did find that following the suggestions and keeping the pressure in the right window really did help get a faster and better shave result. So maybe technology CAN help make for a better shave. So if you're in the market for a new electric razor and you want the BEST, give this one a try today!

Precision Shaving

In the box comes the shaver, a travel case, usb cable with charging stand, a small brush, and their precision trimming attachment. The shaver looks very premium and feels good in hand. The LCD display, yes this has a display built in, is easy to read and bright for how small it is. Travel case is a nice size and whatever fabric they used to make it out of is extremely soft. As stated on the box, no power brick is included so you will need to find one. I really wish they would have provided a beard trimmers attachment as well with this "ultra" package.
There is a mobile app called GroomTribe that you can install on your phone. Then connect the shaver via bluetooth to phone. You can skip this step if you don't want to use the app. But the benefit to connecting is that you can view your shaving stats, get suggestions, tips, and maintenance notifications.
Pros:
premium build quality
nice travel case
charges quickly
multiple cut settings
smooth close cut
led light indicator
cleans easy
bluetooth with companion app
Cons:
no power brick
expensive
no beard trimmer included
Been using it for only a few days now so can't comment on battery life but what I can tell you is that this is indeed the nicest shaver I've ever used. So at the end of the day the big question is does this i9000 prestige ultra series shaver cut better than the other lower tier series 6000, 7000, 8000, etc? The answer is yes it does. My face feels a lot smoother after a cut with this shaver compared to my others. I feel the blades do a better job as well. I don't have to make as many passes over the same spot which speeds up the process. I also enjoy having the the led indicators enabled so I can tell if I'm applying correct pressure or not. In the end this is a great premium shaver with all the bells and whistles but at a premium price.

Very Nice Shaver w/Extraneous Feedback

Since I retired I have not shaved nearly as much as I used to. In fact, I got rid of my previous electric shaver (a foil type), and stuck with using my Philips Norelco One Blade and an actual bladed shaver when the wife complained. Now that I've found something to do in my free time that kind of requires me to not look like a bum most of the time, I felt the need to get another electric razor. While the One Blade actual razor blade is fine to clean up, it is a little too rough on my old skin to do everyday.
In walked the i9000 Prestige Ultra. It has been a while since I've had a shaver with the rotary blades, but this one seemed nice and I was right. It has given me almost blade close shaves in half the time (heck, probably a quarter of the time), and hasn't torn up my face. It is also super easy to clean, both dry and with water. In terms of electric shave quality, this is probably the best electric razor I've owned in my 50+ years. If you are looking for a great electric razor, stop here and go get the i9000, you won't be disappointed.
What follows below are a few things that I found 'meh' about the i9000 more as feedback to Philips and as a warning to potential buyers. All of these things are not deal breakers in the slightest, but are observations from a long time shaver.
GroomTribe App: REALLY? GroomTribe? Whatever. Loaded it up mostly just to check it out and while it made it easier to make changes to the razor settings, it is completely useless to me otherwise. I don't care about feedback on my shaving technique. And speaking of extraneous feedback...
Lightstrip: Turned off immediately. The variety of colors and locations of the lights was giving me a headache. I can feel when I pressing too hard and I don't need Philips to hold my hand to make sure I do proper circular strokes with the razor head. Would be more useful just as a white light to help illuminate my skin better and find stray hairs I might have missed.
Charge Cord: Philips/Norelco, please be advised that it is 2025 and proprietary charge cables are bogus. Making it a proprietary cable with a USB-A plug and no included brick, in the age of USB-C is infuriating. I no longer own a power brick with USB-A. I had to find a USB-A port on an old power strip to charge this thing. USB-C is the way to go for BOTH ends of that charge cable please.
Case: I would prefer if the case for this razor was for just the razor itself and was more svelte. That would be much more useful for me and my travels. As it is, I'm going to look to see if Philips sells a smaller case or if there is a generic one elsewhere.
Again, none of these are dealbreakers, but if they are for you, now you know. Otherwise, it's a great razor.

Upgrade to an A+ electric razor experience!

Bottom Line: The Philips Norelco i9000 Prestige Ultra electric shaver offers a close shave and helpful visual and app feedback.
Pros: delivers close shave; pressure and motion sensor delivers real-time visual and app feedback; automatically keeps track of cleaning and blade life; on board screen shows battery life
Cons: proprietary charging port
Review: I’ve been using electric razors (most of them Norelcos) for over twenty years, and this razor, by far, delivers the best elective shave I’ve experienced. Often times, electric razors, for whatever reason don’t contour to all of my face and miss hairs in certain spots, which I frustratingly tend to notice hours later. This razor delivers a blade smooth dry cut on every spot of my face.
Perhaps part of the reason my shaving experience has improved is because the i9000 provides real time feedback for both pressure and motion. The razor has lights to indicate if you’re pressing too hard, not enough, or just right. It also tracks the motion to ensure you’re moving the razor for an optimal shave. The onboard screen and button allows you to easily toggle between shave modes, toggle the guide lights, and shows the battery life. You can optionally connect the razor to your phone via an app, which will also show real time shaving feedback and track your cleaning cycles and blade life.
My one complaint is that the razor uses a proprietary charging port. This means that you have to use the included USB-A to proprietary port cable to charge the device rather than just using a cable you already have. Also, since the included cable is USB-A, and so you also need to have a USB-A charging brick even though a lot of devices have moved to USB-C.

I’ve been using this for a few weeks now and have really put it through its paces. I’ve recently taken it with me on a 10 day vacation and had all stages of beard growth on that trip! I shaved before I left, but after a week I had some thick hair and needed a shave badly! I decided to use this and didn’t bring any other razors with me since I was flying. I was so surprised with the quality of shave I got from this! Usually after using an electric razor, you can rub your hand over the face and still feel some stubborn hair stubble. Not with this! My face felt so smooth and honestly felt smoother than when I used my old fashioned safety razor I’ve been using. It cut easily through my long beard stubble and left me with a clean shaven and very smooth face! I used it again with much less growth 3 days later before I flew home and again, my shave was perfectly smooth and it was quick and easy! I would easily buy this razor and would absolutely recommend this to anyone who needs a quick and easy shave without any fuss!
