I had very high hopes for this machine. I thought the idea of easy homemade pasta was so great. And don’t get me wrong, I think this pasta maker can make some pretty good pasta. But, the instructions for how to use it might be the worst I’ve ever seen for anything I’ve ever bought.
Usually I don’t think to much about the instructions for things but, this is the first time I’ve noticed that instructions are key to a product success and Philips really failed here. I’m not a very experienced pasta chef, in fact I’ve never actually made homemade pasta dough before getting this pasta maker. So instructions for me were a must. I tried reading several times the 2 different books that came with the pasta maker and what I’ve gathered is there are three sets of instructions, one in each book, along with a set of pictures. After wasting almost and entire bag of flour, I finally understood the measurements, which unless you own a kitchen scale (I do not) are very hard to figure out, since the only place that tells you that the included cup is 8.8oz is a picture not even close to the other instructions.
I’ve also found some of the recipes to have some editing issues, like calling for salt but, not listing it in the ingredients.
Once I did figure out the ratios, I was surprised at how well the dough came out. It really was just pour in the flour, start, then add egg water and that’s it.
Cleaning wasn’t as easy as they make it sound either. There is one piece that turns the mixer that can’t be removed from the main unit. As this piece comes into direct contact with the dough, it gets really messy and is hard to clean.
Overall, I think I will like this product but, only after I’ve learned through trial and error.
Pros:
- quick easy pasta once you figure it out.
- lots of different pasta recipes
- tastes good.
Cons
- instructions are terrible.
- parts hard to clean
- very big and bulky

Philips - Avance Collection Pasta and Noodle Maker - White/Silver is a great pasta maker! Now, I’m not a “noodle” guy, but my wife loves pasta – there are certain dishes I do like, but by and large, I’ll pass on most pasta. Just about all the pasta I’ve ever eaten has come from the local grocery store. Our first attempt at pasta with the Philips Pasta/Noodle Maker was using the included Philips recipe booklet, and we selected the one called Tomato pasta/noodles since it was quite simple. We made spaghetti, and it was the best spaghetti I’ve ever eaten. Later, we used the same meat sauce over “store bought” spaghetti noodles as an experiment, and that spaghetti didn’t have anywhere near the flavor of our first noodle batch made with the Philips Pasta Maker – I wouldn’t have believed it if I hadn’t experienced it!
So, prior to this experience I couldn’t imagine why anyone would want to buy a pasta machine and take the time to make their own pasta when you can buy all you the pasta you want from the store for little money and little time – it just didn’t make sense to me. Well, now I know why people make their own pasta.
To me, the Philips Pasta/Noodle Maker is a solid piece of equipment. It weighs around 20 pounds, so it doesn’t move around on you while in use. The simple User Manual shows step-by-step how to take it apart, clean it, and put it back together. Once you’ve done it, it’s dead simple to do. It cleans up easily too. Some parts can be washed in the dishwasher, and those remaining can be quickly cleaned in hot water or soapy hot water as you choose. It comes with a tool to cut the pasta as it’s being extruded from the machine, and it has 4 shaping discs for spaghetti, fettuccine, penne and lasagna – you can separately purchase additional shaping discs for other types/styles of pasta, if you like. The controls with a display are on the top front of the machine and are simple to operate.
You basically can use all-purpose flour, as we did, adding any liquid or egg called for by the recipe. The flour goes in the mixing chamber and liquids are poured into the recessed lid that has holes in it which “meters” the flow of liquid into the flour as the mixing paddle turns. Once it reaches a proper consistency, it will begin extruding the dough through the shaping disc you’ve chosen. You’ll need to either cook the pasta shortly after or dry it on a rack or even store it in the refrigerator if you want to wait before cooking it.
There is a KEY to getting the right dough consistency, so the extrusion process goes properly – the directions are a bit unclear when it comes to measurements etc. What we found, after experimentation, is to weigh the flour (or any other dry ingredients) precisely. It comes with a dry measuring cup, but it doesn’t actually hold a cup as one cup would show on a regular measuring cup you may have in your kitchen. Additionally, flour/dry ingredients can compress down (or not depending on how it’s handled), which will throw off the ratio of ingredients so that the dough will not extrude properly, and it may end up too dry or too sticky when it does extrude. The directions do tell you the exact grams of flour/dry ingredients to use making your dough, so weigh your flour (remember to deduct the weight of the cup) according to what it tells you, and things will go swimmingly!
The Philips Pasta/Noodle Maker is an excellent piece of equipment that will, after adding the ingredients, make wonderful pasta automatically. As a “non-noodle” guy, I’m truly impressed with the simplicity of the machine, its automatic performance, and the excellent taste of the pasta.

The Philips Avance Collection Pasta and Noodle Maker is something you get when you and your family are really into eating pasta and you want to eat quality pasta. Someone that is knowingly making a purchase of an item that will take up storage space or counter space. At the almost $300 mark, these are all things you have to take a look at.
That being said, if you are looking for a pasta maker, this is the one you need to buy. That is a bold statement, but I mean it. Growing up, I remember my Mom making fresh pasta. She would make the dough and they she would put sheets of it she had rolled out through a manual machine that churned out fettuccini and maybe lasagna noodles. It helped make the best chicken noodle soup you can imagine, but nothing more really.
This is not the same thing. This Philips model is higher capacity than they smaller model, and depending on your family size you can make enough pasta in one run to feed a group. All you do is put the flour in the machine and turn it on. Then pour the water or water/egg mixture through the top of the machine so it slowly combines with the flour. The machine does ALL the work for you. The hard choice for you is trying to figure out what type of pasta to make!
It comes with a variety of discs that store in a small compartment at the bottom of the machine. With the included discs, you can make spaghetti, fettuccini, penne or lasagna. You can purchase additional discs to make other types of pasta, but that is what it comes with to start.
Cleaning is the cool part, because lets be honest…nobody likes to clean up a complicated machine that does not allow you to get into the nooks and crannies. Many of the parts are machine washable, and disassembly and assembly are simple and intuitive. Once you take it apart, you can hand wash everything and wipe down the machine in five minutes. You would think the small discs used to press out the pasta would be hard to get into, and they would be normally. However, they include a cleaning tool that makes it a snap.
In addition to the above items, the package includes a measuring cup that makes it easier to judge the mixture ratios. Also included is a recipe book that has some cool ideas.
This is a really cool item for someone that would use it. And the fact that we can now make healthier and gourmet quality pasta makes it all that much better. I recommend this to anyone that will use a machine like this. For my family, it earned its spot in our kitchen.

Making pasta isn't one of those things that's particularly hard, but it can definitely be time consuming and will generally leave your kitchen coated in a thin layer of flour by the time you're done. The Philips Avance pasta maker seeks to address both of those with one mostly automated device - and I have to say it does a pretty good job of it.
The description really is accurate with this one - you really do just fill the hopper with flour, push a button, then slowly pour in some liquid and let the machine do its thing. The pasta maker takes about ten minutes total to complete its task, and about five minutes to clean up after. And the pasta it creates is absolutely delicious. I've tried it now with both recipes made specifically for the machine (a book containing a few dozen different pasta types is included in the box) and with recipes I got off the internet, and both worked great.
That said, if you do decide that a pasta making robot is something you need in your life, there are a few things you should definitely be aware of. First: this thing is pretty big and just slightly on the heavy side. Add in a plate to catch the pasta as its produced, and you may find there's not much counter space left for other prep work. Second, you really do need to be careful when pouring the liquid if you're using the included measuring cup. The broad lip doesn't do the best job at directing and containing the liquid as you pour it, making it very easy to spill if you don't control the rate properly. Third, if you don't already own a kitchen scale it's probably a good idea to get one. Just about every pasta recipe you'll find measures out the ingredients by weight rather than volume, and conversions get very tricky if you don't know exactly how fine the flour used was ground. The included measuring cup is an okay work around, but it's still a work around.
Oh, and I'd definitely recommend using one of the recipes based on semolina flour rather than all purpose for your first batch. Trust me, you'll be much happier with the results.

Easy, low effort homemade pasta

This pasta maker is my first ever attempt at homemade pasta, so I may be easier to impress than an experienced cook. Overall I loved this machine.
In the box you have the pasta maker, 4 discs (spaghetti, fettuccine, penne, lasagna), cleaning tools, pasta cutter, and liquid measuring cup. Setup is quick, but I did double check the instructions to make sure I had it put together correctly, which is a rare occurrence for me.
Next I had to figure out what I was doing. If I could deduct half of a star for the instructions, I would. I love the machine, but the guide for pasta ingredients is severely lacking. If you find yourself in this situation, go search online, there is plenty of guidance for egg, flour, water ratios. My first batch was a double (17.6 oz flour) batch of penne, in which I used 2 eggs and weighed the flour (important).
The instructions advise to pour in flour, turn on, then pour in liquid through the slits in the top to ensure an even liquid distribution. Make sure you beat the egg well or it will pool and not flow through the slots. The machine will then mix for 3 minutes (note, pasta dough will still look fairly crumbly, do not add any additional liquid). After the 3 minute mark, the pasta maker will reverse direction and extrude the pasta of the corresponding disc. From adding flour to cutting the last of the pasta took less than 10 minutes for the double batch.
The penne I made for my first batch was excellent, perfect consistency and was identifiable in shape - not clumpy or misformed as I had feared would happen. The cleanup is easy, disassemble, let the pasta in the disc dry, then use the tool to push it through. The quality of the parts seems solid and I do not have any concerns with this machine surviving weekly use. Overall I highly recommend this machine, just be prepared to find your pasta recipes online if you're new to this.

This is my first experience with a Pasta maker of any kind, and I can't really think of a way it could be easier to use. Our first test with the machine was wheat pasta using all-purpose flour (since this is all we had on hand), we did a Penne Noodle. The manual recommends semolina flour for the best consistency and texture and we'll try that next time.
The first few noodles that came out of the machine were split on one side, but after a minute or so, the rest of the noodles were fine.
A whole 500g batch of pasta took about 15 minutes total with very little wasted dough.
Clean up is pretty easy too. There are a lot of components, but everything washes easily by hand. Most components are supposed to be dishwasher safe, but I wouldn't put the mixing chamber in there.
Anyways, don't think we'll go back to boxed pasta, this tastes much better!

You probably think that you don’t need this machine considering the large available selection of pastas in the supermarket, the price of a box and the potential effort of preparing your own pasta, Right? Please think it again! If the taste, knowing the origin of your food and the ingredients are important to you and you are a pasta lover, perhaps you should take a look into this machine. The process is simple and clean, you put all the ingredients in the machine and the pasta is done in the time that your pot of water takes to boil.
This is a great alternative to the traditional mechanical manual pasta machine, mostly because the preparation process doesn’t require anymore, you to prepare the dough first (and the mess of it) and after passing it into the traditional machine moving the handgrip couple of times to have the spaghetti ready. You have no excuse because all is automatic and the machine prepares for you as many varieties of pasta as “preparing disks” are in the box, using you preference of flour and water (with or without egg). If you like the colors, just add few elements as carrot juice, beet juice or spinach juice.
The machine is coming with four disks to elaborate different sizes of pasta: penne, fettucine, spaghetti and lasagna. While initially I was keeping in mind that the spaghetti will be my favorite, I realized that there are plenty of pasta preparations that are done with the (lasagna type) sheets of pasta, like the Asian dumplings but also some of them very traditional in the Latino culture: empanadas or pastelitos. Looking forward to lend it to my aunt for her “pastelitos de yuca”.
In the design part, I like the internal storage part that after the cleaning process, allows you to keep contained all the pieces of this kit.
Couple of recommendations based on my own experience:
1.- After you finish the process, put all the machine components (except the electrical part!) in some water to keep the dough from hardening on the machine. After doing it, a running water and a wet paper towel will make its cleaning job.
Only one exception are the disks, I found that the dry dough comes easy from the small holes than the wet one.
2.- Experiment with different flours. I tried at least three options: rice, chickpeas and sorghum.
3.- Follow the instructions. In my first couple of batches, I had the temptation of mistrusting the instruction book and adding extra water, I though that my eye and coking knowledge can beat the machine. I was wrong!. While the dough could look initially dry and you could feel that the pasta is not going to be good, at the end with the right quantities and instructions, the taste is impressive.
One single element that bothers me a bit is the size of the machine. I recognize that in an small kitchen you could find it a bit cumbersome but this is also the price of making it automatic.
A final thought, I only used the machine for few days and I see that some of the pieces are made of (heavy/resistant) plastic, but because the process require mechanical movement and pressures in several directions, I am fearful about the longevity of some of those pieces. The fact that the brand is well known and serious with the guarantee and spare parts also convinced me. Fingers crossed!.

This was a step outside of my traditional testing habits. I have had a fun and sometimes silly time using this device. My review is from the perspective of someone who has only ever made pasta noddle’s by opening a package. On the counter, the unit is very Professional looking and at first a bit intimidating. However, the unit has some very clear and basic how to's that made possible for someone like me to mustard through and make Pasta. I have tried several types and I have been very successful on some and well let's just say I still crafting my art on others (angel hair pasta - I am talking to you). Clean up is nice and with a little attention to detail while cleaning it comes out like new.
The best thing I can say about it is that I am able to use it to make deviously edible noodles in all shapes and flavors.

If you're interested in eating healthier, one way is to make more food at home. This pasta maker allows users to make their own pasta at home, and makes it so easy. It mixes, kneads and extrudes for you. It comes with four discs to make different pasta- spaghetti, fettuccine, penne, or lasagna noodles, and a storage compartment to keep them in. It also comes with a tool that helps get remove remaining dough, and aids in the cleanup process. It really is easy to use and clean after.
Just put the ingredients in- measured as indicated in the booklet- no need to mix before. It reminded me of a good bread maker, which takes the work out of it and simplifies it to appeal to more users, not just those who have a lot of time. It takes less than ten minutes to extrude (push out) the pasta, maybe fifteen minutes for the entire process.
It comes with a small book with how to make the dough and a bunch of recipes. There's room to make variations and try different ingredients, including different kinds of flour, and juice instead of water. You can also choose between with or without egg. As long as you stick to the proportions of wet and dry ingredients, it allows for experimenting with different recipes. It is very different from the dried boxed pasta. It's adjustment, but very good pasta. It's softer, but you can dry it before cooking for better results.
This would be especially good for someone who wants or needs gluten free, as it'll taste better than a lot of gluten free options. It does tend to stick together, at least with the spaghetti.
Pros: healthier, known ingredients, no preservatives, fun to make, easy, since the machine does most of the work.
Cons: doesn't make a lot (less than a pound), alternative flours are more expensive .
This isn't really cheaper than buying the boxed pasta, but there are benefits to fresh pasta. If you've bought the pasta maker, your focus is on healthier eating and not on cutting corners with the least expensive option. Overall, I really enjoyed trying out the fresh pasta, and while it won't always replace other pasta, it will be get regular use. There's still plenty we haven't tried yet.

I made several batches of pasta and had varied results. I had to purchase a digital scale to weigh the flour. I wish the instructions called for cup measurements instead of gram weights. I used the same mixture of semolina and all purpose flour for all 3 batches. I whisked the mixture and then sifted it before putting it in the machine. The first batch I made was spaghetti. I followed the directions, which are partly in the manual and partly in the recipe book. The mixture looked dry and I thought I had failed. The spaghetti was extruded and tasted fine but I found when cleaning up that there was a large amount of liquid on my kitchen counter. I reread the directions and found that while I had turned the machine on, I hadn't started "the program" as instructed and leaking was the consequence. The pasta was fine but there was some unmixed flour left over. The next batch I made penne. I beat the egg/water mixture with a fork in the supplied measuring cup. I guess I didn't mix the egg and water well enough. The gelatinous parts of the egg clogged the slots that you pour the liquid through. I had to force the egg solids through the slots. I started the program before pouring the liquid this time. The mixture was soft and did not feed through the extruder. I had to stop the machine and put the dough in the feeder a number of times. The penne was wet and soft, the tubes collapsed and stuck together. It did not cook well. Edible but not very good. The next batch I made fettuccini. I beat the egg, filled the supplied measuring cup a bit under the line with water, poured the mixture into a separate bowl and mixed well. This time it drained through the feeding slots, mixed well and made great pasta. While this makes great pasta and is way less trouble than the Atlas hand crank pasta roller/cutter I have used for decades, I'm still not comfortable that I have mastered this machine. I wish the instructions were all in one place and a bit better. Practice makes perfect, unfortunately I feel like I need more practice. I guess 2 out of 3 tries isn't bad.

Never made my own pasta before but after using this for a month it’s a breeze. Has simple institutions and beautiful design. Comes with four noodle attachments (spaghetti, linguine, penne & ravioli), pasta cutter and cleaner. You can buy other attachments to make several types of noodles (I recommend getting the angel hair one).
I kid you not when it comes to using this, measure dry ingredients and place into the machine, start device, add wet ingredients and in no time flat...delicious fresh noodles. You’ll never want to eat boxed noodles again.
This will also make rice noodles which is used in pho. I HIGHLY recommend trying this!! Makes pho taste 100x better when the noodles are fresh!
To make most noodles you’ll need semolina flour (amazon) but you can use whole wheat, bread & rice as well to make them.
Just love love love this product!

The Philips Avance Collection Pasta and Noodle Maker is an excellent kitchen device if you have any interest in making your own pasta. It comes with a variety of molds and has built-in scales, which make it pretty easy to use (although it looks intimidating when you first unpack it). The molds clean easily and are dishwasher safe, too, which is nice. You can make a variety of pasta types, as well as raman. The process is pretty quick, overall. It generally takes under 20 minutes to have fresh, homemade pasta ready to serve.

Homemade pasta made easy

So I love homemade pasta. The only thing is that it can be alot of work. I have a big family. Making handmade pasta for 15 people is a freaking nightmare. So then, enter the Avance pasta maker.
First, taking it out of the box. It looks interesting. I don't think it will look out of place in any kitchen. The build quality feels excellent. There is some weight to all of the individual parts. Only time will tell about the longevity of the device.
Then, the actual pasta making. It was shockingly easy. You can seriously make pasta faster than it takes for water to boil. It took about 15 minutes to have a full set of pasta. I was surprised it actually worked according to the videos. Anyone could operate it. The instructions are very easy to follow. What was awesome is that there wasn't a mess afterwards. No flour everywhere that you have to wipe up or clean because it's caked on. The operation is also quiet. It's not like a standmixer. We really love it.
In terms of clean up, I do think it can be a little annoying. It is easier if you just leave it overnight and everything dries. Then, it is easier to wipe off. However, if you need to make multiple batches, I do think you need to clean everything off in order to use it again. This can be annoying...
I think the versatility of the device in terms of the types of pasta you can make is awesome. You can make spaghetti, penne, lasagna, and fettucine.
Cons
You have to follow the instructions to a T. If you stray from it, it won't extrude. I added one more egg and it wouldn't extrude. I like more egg than water in my pasta, but this doesn't really allow for that.
The noodles are a little bit on the thick side. It really isn't a problem for me but for some that might be an issue.
Also, the pasta gets better as time goes on. Meaning, the first pasta that is extruded feels and looks a little under-kneaded.
I always feel bad about the leftover dough. Not all of it is extruded. It does feel like a waste.
Other than that, I really believe homemade pasta is the best. This device opens up another world for home cooks.

Great Automatic Pasta Maker but Poor Instructions

The Philips Avance Collection Pasta and Noodle Maker is a great automatic machine that makes delicious pasta. My child said it was the best pasta she’s eaten. Just mix the ingredients in the machine and out comes pasta in whatever shape you want.
However, the instruction manual has a lot left to be desired. It is not overly easy to read and understand. The instructions about the proper amount of liquid and flour needed is extremely confusing. I ended up making my best guess based on how I could interpret the instructions. It really is poorly written. Make sure you read the instructions all the way through before you make your first batch of pasta.
Once you are able to understand the instructions, at least we’ll enough to start, it’s very simple. Takes less than 10 minute to have a batch of fresh pasta.
