I am pretty impressed by this Alarm/Light. I did a lot of research before purchasing this product and the science behind it is good. The alarm clock has multiple settings to help you wake up. The 1st is the lamp that is supposed to mimic waking up the sun. This works wonderful! The lamp is set to go off 30 minutes before your actual alarm clock and it works. Everyday I have this setup I always find myself pleasently awake and alert before the alarm goes off. It does have a snooze function as well, but I tend not to use this. When you set the alarm you can choose to be woken up by raido or by nature sounds. The nature sounds are pretty good although I really like to use the raido. The other features also have some breathing techniques you can use to help you wind down for the day, and this alarm clock even functions as a nightlight as well too!

The light does its' job. It wakens you with light, which gradually gets stronger. Kind of like the sun does in season.
After I got cancer, I decided to no-longer set an alarm clock. I allowed the sun and the birds to wake me up. All was good.
In addition, I followed health advice: which is to get early morning sun to set circadian rhythms. This works in the summer season.
But in the wintertime we who live in the midwest don't get enough sun. So a thought is that a lamp like this helps.
This product mimics what I get in the summer. One difference is the birds they recorded and play at wakeup time are more of a coastal-bird sound. Still, it is less shocking to wake-up to than a traditional alarm clock.

Light Therapy Gets the Nod

My primary interest in the Philips Smart Sleep and Wake Up light was two fold. First off I wanted something that would help wake me more naturally in the winter months. I hate dealing with an alarm clock on the dark winter mornings during the work week. Secondly I wanted something that would soothe the kids to sleep. This Sleep and Wake Up Light does a fairly good job at meeting both my objectives.
The design of the light is quite unique, its round with an offset hole in the middle and looks kind of modern. The base takes up a fair amount of space, its 8.8 x 8.6 x 4.7 and it needs to be close to the bed so that you can get the most benefit from it. The light functions as an alarm clock so towards the bottom of the light you can see the current time and the time set for any alarms. The brightness of the built in clock can be adjusted to keep it very dim which is wonderful. Right below the time there is a home key icon used for set up. The set up isn’t that difficult but because the icons are not common I recommend using the user manual which is provided to help navigate the settings until you are familiar with them. The set up is done by touching icons displayed below the current time. From the home menu you can set the alarm, the light intensity, audio choices and sleep therapy functions. On the top of the lamp there is a night light / snooze button. The night light illuminates the light with a low level redish orange glow.
Wake Up Functions: To set up the alarm you set the time to wake up, the final brightness of the light, how long it takes to get to full brilliance and the audio if you want sounds to join the light. If you choose to include audio to help wake you up can you use the built-in FM radio and its 5 preset radio buttons or you can choose from the seven included back ground sounds, five of which are nature sounds like birds chirping. The speaker quality is what you would expect on a typical alarm clock, its not great but not terrible either. The nature sounds at a lower to mid volume are pleasant but at higher volumes they start to become annoying. I have found waking up to slowly increasing light with the sounds of birds chirping to be a far more pleasant way to start the day.
Sleep Functions: There are two different programs built in to help you sleep. One called the sunset mimics the sun going down. You set the light’s brilliance and the time of how long it takes for the light to slowly go out. You can also add audio in the form of a light rain or ocean waves. Personally I think they should have included more choices because falling asleep can be more problematic. The second program is a guided breathing program. In this program you select whether you want sound or light to guide you along with the number of breaths per minute and how long you want the program to last. The sound guide uses the ocean waves but I found this more difficult to use than the light. The light guide uses the lamp to provide a red light that slowly increases and decreases in intensity. This was very easy to follow, inhale as it got brighter, exhale as it dimmed. I found both programs were helpful, the sunset program worked better for the kids while the adults liked the guided breathing better.
Things to Consider: The wake up light does a wonderful job of waking you and anyone else in the room up. If everyone isn’t getting up at the same time this could be an issue. My wife and I have different breathing rates so using the guided breathing program can be a little less successful for one or the other. The unit has power failure protection which means nothing is lost if you unplug it. This was a plus for me because I could use the sunset program to put the kids asleep and then unplug the light and move it into my bedroom to use the guided breathing and wake up light in the morning. There is no blue tooth or wireless connectivity so there are no apps for this model nor can you stream music to it. The light never gets hot and is always cool to touch.

Good lamp. Would be perfect if I got 8 hours every night, but cannot for the life of me accept the brightness 30 minutes before I need to get up.

Not sure if I am waking up better; seem to be snoozing the alarm just as much with my old alarm clock. Could use with more “natural” sounds. I think they all have a musical component that can be jarring or just off key. Have not really used the sleep function since first buying the device. Just not there yet. Hope this is something that grows on you - pretty expensive for its function!

I love this clock. The wind down sunset feature is great and has really helped me fall asleep much more quickly each night. The sunrise function gradually wakes me up, and I feel more well rested as I am not jolted out of bed by an alarm clock.

I’ve been looking at many different “Sunrise” alarms lately, but decided on this one. Very easy setup. You can customize every little thing about the brightness, audio level, length of time for the sunrise and sunset feel. But it’s pretty cool to wake up to a very dim sun look and keep waking up a little with it brighter and brighter. I love it.

Don’t think about it as long as I did just go out and buy it. The sound could be a little clearer but overall I would say it is great. The light is adjustable so I won’t be too bright coming on or going off. Overall I feel that it is improve my sleep quality and helps me fall asleep much faster.

Improved the quality of my sleep

This thing has greatly improved the quality of my sleep. I have a real hard time falling asleep and getting up in the morning. The countdown timer makes falling asleep easier. Simulating the sunset helps get my brain in the right mindset for sleep, compared to doomscrolling through social media.
The dawn simulation is so nice to wake up to, compared to waking up to an ugly sounding alarm in a dark room. Waking up at 5 in the morning is way easier with this lamp, especially in the winter.
My biggest complaint is that the options for sounds to wake up and fall asleep to are really limited. There is the option to plug in an auxiliary cable or to use it as a radio, but at this price a few more soundscapes would be nicer.
I haven't finished playing around with all the different options yet, but I purchased it as a way to help me wake up in the morning since waking up to natural sunlight is not an option, and this thing delivers on that 100%.

Wonderful! It's extremely helpful for waking up in the morning. I didn't think I'd use it at night, but I actually do! It is enough light to move around the bedroom, making melatonin while getting ready for bed!

Helps with waking up especially in these winter months where its generally still dark for those of us that work in the morning. Would have given 5 stars but the options for wake up sounds are fairly limited and none of them are great.
