Great Alarm Clock with light and sound
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The SmartSleep Therapy Lamp is great alarm clock with good sound. I was expecting that it could work as a white noise machine with configurable lighting. That's not exactly what it is. It does have very cool lighting, an easy to read display, and a good speaker built-in. Simple to use There is no computer connectivity which may be a plus for some. There are no updates to download and install, no app for your phone that you need to control it, and no network connectivity to configure. You just turn it on, choose a few basic settings, set the time, and you're ready to go. The menus are a little odd to get used to but the touch sensitivity works very well and the screen is easy to read. Lighting The lighting gets bright - it can be very bright for a room, at least at night. The control over the color is limited. It's more like you control the intensity. You've basically have shades of red, orange, yellow, then to white. So you can't just use any color. You control the color and brightness together for the most part. There is technically have a brightness control but you'll see what I mean when you use it. That may be a bad explaination but the darker colors seem less bright - though that's probably not the case. The light changes are used for waking up or going to sleep as well as relaxing/breathing exercises to calm down. You can touch the top middle of the back of the lamp and make it give a warm glow as a night light. Touch it again to turn it off. I find it to be a very effective night light. The changing color seemed to be helpful, along with the sound as mentioned below, to get me to fall asleep. Audio While it does have very good quality sound, the nature recording sound very good and you have a handful of options to choose from for wake up and for going to bed. I especially like the animals and cowbells for waking up and the ocean waves for going to sleep. The wake-up sound is effective and pleasant. The going to sleep, with the light changing and the waves, seems helpful for me! I actually feel like it helps me fall asleep faster. Which is a claim they make that I doubted. It seems to help me relax and fall asleep faster than normal. It also has an audio in. I have a network audio device connected to it so I play play any music I want through it's speaker. That works well and sounds very good. I like having that functionality. I don't usually listen to the radio but since this has an FM radio built-in I wanted to try it out. It has five locations for you to store FM stations in. It was easy to setup and the radio worked well. I was surprised that it didn't have an option to use it as a white noise machine. It didn't seem like I could just have the white noise play all the time. Those sounds are used for specific settings like waking up. It's a very cool alarm clock. I really like the sounds for going to sleep and the alarm. The fact that I can use it as a speaker with a USB port to power a network audio device with an aux out is a great bonus! Again, I was surprised you can't use the built in nature sounds, waves, or rain as background or white noise all the time. It would have been easy for them to make that an option where you can select only the radio or the aux in.

Well-built product - just not for everyone.
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. It is a novel idea. Simulate a natural rising of the sun, potentially resulting in a more natural awakening. And the Philips SmartSleep (formerly known as Somneo) certainly provides that it well in a well-built product. The problem is that this idea is just not for everyone. I’ve tried using this as my alarm clock for the past several days now and every day, 15 minutes before the alarm is even set to go off I wake up pretty angrily to a bright light, being all grumpy saying “what the heck is this darn light” (in much more colorful language of course). I end up just turning off the alarm and going back to sleep. I’d much rather wake up to my normal phone alarm. But my experience should not cause you to believe that this is a poor product. First, it feels and looks like a high quality product with high quality plastics. Second, the lighting mechanism is very strong. If it made me annoyed at the light you know that it can get bright enough. Third, the display is very visible, even during the day. At the very least you can use this as a basic alarm clock with a very bright night light. I love the night light functionality – just tap the top of the unit and the whole light becomes red. Tap it again and it goes off. Downsides? Well, for one the speaker is rather weak. Would have been nice to have a little better speaker. I get that this is supposed to be an alarm clock, but it allows you to plug in auxiliary audio, e.g. your phone. The noise reproduction is just not going to be anywhere close to a Bluetooth speaker unfortunately. Second, the on screen controls, while super easy to touch and activate, are very hard to navigate. You really need to study the manual because trying to fiddle around with the device to figure it out on your own is not possible. Finally, it is big. I get the whole new-age look, but I think they could have achieved the same effect in a smaller form factor. If you want to try it out as you think the natural light might help you wake up better, you would be hard pressed to find a better product. If you are ok with your phone alarm (or radio clock) and hate when sunlight comes in your room (e.g. you use blackout curtains for the specific purpose of blocking out sunlight), then you probably should skip this.

Excellent quality light, radio, and alarm
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. So far this light/clock has been great. It has so many modes and functions. You can fall asleep to different nature sounds, pick different sounds for your alarm, and be woken up by artificial daylight. The light gets surprisingly bright, and the clock screen is not intrusive at all during the night. Dual alarms can be set with separate customize-able settings. It also has a unique design that does not appear to clash with any decor. It's a functional design yet modern.

Wake up stress free
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The Philips SmartSleep Wake up light is a surprisingly great way to get out of bed in the morning. Philips did a great job at designing the light to be compact and sleek, The back of the light has a USB port to charge your phone and aux input if you would like listen to music from your phone or MP3 player. The smart touch controls on the light work very well and they are fairly self explanatory. You can easily set the alarm and intensity of the wake up light and volume all with a few taps of the controls. After using this light for a few days I truly can say that the wake up experience is much better than the standard alarm clock on my iPhone. I did not feel like smashing the light with a hammer because it was not annoying like alarm clocks of the past. The light is definitely a much more soothing way to wake up in the morning especially if you wake up when it is still dark outside. You do have the option to wake up to FM radio if you prefer not to wake up to nature sounds. The clock also has a wind down or relax breathe feature that essentially lets you relax through mindful breathing while simulating a sunset along with nature sounds. Overall Philips did a great job designing this wake up light and I would definitely recommend this product

Helps me calm my mind
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The Phillips SmartSleep lamp is quite the gadget. I didn’t really have super high expectations that it would help me rest easier, but I have been pleasantly surprised. First off, this is a nice solid piece of equipment. It has a nice weight to it without being overly bulky. It fits nicely on a night stand and has a wide base so it won’t easily be knocked over. It has a generously long power cord which came in quite handy in my current room setup. The quick start guide is well made and easy to follow. My 15-year-old daughter wanted to set it up for me, so I handed it over and watched. She had no problem navigating through the various settings while following the guide. It was quite intuitive and simple for such a potentially complicated gadget. The touchscreen functionality is very responsive. I don’t recall ever having to hunt for just the right spot. It allows you to adjust the intensity of the light that you prefer, which I found very nice. It also allows you to set how long you want your sunset/sunrise to span. There are sound options as well. A few built-in sounds and an FM radio option…as well as no sound. I didn’t love the nature sounds, but that’s really just a personal preference. They sounded fine, just not what I want to wake up to. I did enjoy the couple of melodies. They are slightly cheesy, but somehow soothing at the same time. The FM radio works well. It picks up the stations I would expect it to pick up clearly. It has a thin wire antenna that you can tack up to the wall to improve reception. I’m a good 20 miles from the source of those stations and they still come in clearly. I was impressed with the sound quality. It’s no high-end stereo of course, but for what it is, essentially a really fancy clock/radio/lamp combo, it holds it’s own. I like that is has an Aux input so that I can play music from my cell since I didn’t already have an external speaker in my bedroom. It would be nice if it were Bluetooth but it’s not that big of a deal since it comes with the Aux cord so you can hook up a device right out of the box without having to buy accessories. It also has a build in USB charging port, so you can charge your device with you sleep or listen to music. Something to note…you can’t wake to an Aux device like your phone playing music through an app. You have to use one of their sounds or the radio. I understand the complexities of allowing external devices on wake up, but it’s still something that would be nice to have. It’s certainly no deal breaker. The breathing exercises definitely help me to relax and calm myself. You can set how many breaths per minute you are comfortable with. You simply follow the light cues to establish a breathing rhythm. I Found this quit relaxing. By the time I completed a few breathing exercises and then reached the end of my 30-minute sunset routine, I was well on my way to sleep. I sort of remember it getting dark, but I was too close to sleep to really be aware of anything at that point. It’s gets bright outside so early this time of year that I haven’t really gotten a lot of use out of the sunrise feature. I do have it set up, but I generally wake up by the actual sun sooner than it really gets going. I am really looking forward to having that during the darker winter months. I don’t know that I wake up feeling any more refreshed per say, but I do fall asleep easier and it helps me keep my mind from spinning. I haven’t had it very long. I suspect that the cumulative effect of falling asleep faster, and therefore getting a few extra winks each night, will ultimately help me feel more rested when I start my day. I am definitely enjoying the product and wouldn’t hesitate to recommend it to someone who is looking for a little extra help calming down and getting to sleep at night. I also believe it will be very helpful in the dark of winter when it’s much more difficult to wake up for work. Obviously, it’s just a piece of tech. It’s not a magic sleep machine. You have to want it to work, and intentionally calm yourself while following the process. If you make an effort, I think this can help you.

Cool is more important than functional
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This thing is seriously cool! It is just unfortunate that, to make it cool, they sacrificed functionality. First of all, it uses a projection system for the user interface. A dot matrix display is projected onto the front of the “display,” and there are five touch-sensitive areas that serve as the buttons, plus one snooze button on the top. That is it. This is the greatest weakness. It looks amazing, but to do anything, you have to navigate a plethora of menus. I am also sure that having this cool projection system contributes to the high price. Are you listening to the radio and want to change the volume? Press “Home” and then press “Radio” and finally press the “Volume” button. Finally you can press the “Plus” or “Minus” buttons. Yup, just changing the volume is a pain. Having separate buttons or a knob on the side to control the volume would have been SO much easier, but then you loose the “cool” factor of the touch interface. The entire user interface is like this. However, this thing does do as it advertises, once you can get past figuring out how to use it. You can wake up to a dim red light that gradually brightens and whitens up. This part is fantastic, as long as you sleep alone, or your partner needs to wake up at the same time. However, if you want to get up and your partner wants to sleep in, this might not be the product for you. You can also choose to wake up to radio, or a selection of pre-recorded nature sounds. This part is pretty nice. There is also a “Calm Down” mode that will try to help you get to sleep. You can choose the radio, aux input, or more nature sounds, and the light goes in reverse from wake-up (bright white to dim red). I am not sure how useful this is. If you want to read as you calm down, the light as it gets red is not nearly bright enough to read by, so you need another light going anyways. So, unless your idea of “Calm Down” involves laying there doing nothing, I am not sure how this is supposed to be used. There are also breathing exercises that are supposed to help you sleep, but I don’t see myself using this feature. This clock also features an auxiliary input using a genuine audio cable! Yes, at this high price, Philips could not afford to put Bluetooth into it. I cannot imagine what they were thinking. On the plus side, there is a USB port in the back for charging your phone, but at only 1A. I guess if you have all night to charge, you don’t need to be in a hurry. Finally, there is an FM antenna wire sticking out of the back. There is already a long wire that goes to the power adapter, and it is certainly possible to use that cord as an antenna, but they took the easy way out and just gave you another wire to deal with. So if you use this to charge your phone, you have FOUR cables sticking out the back (USB power, unit power, FM antenna, and auxiliary audio input). So, this product does indeed do what it says, but a lot of strange decisions mean that this product has a lot of room for improvement, which is sad, given the asking price.

Gentle Wakeup
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Using a mixture of warm light and sound, the SmartSleep attempts to gently wake you up. Sleeping in a room that my wife likes to keep as dark as possible is sometimes a little much when waking up in the morning. I didn't ever really take into consideration how that affected my body, how it tricks my brain into thinking it is still night time. Using the SmartSleep I have been waking up more energized and alert. Before your actual alarm, the clock begins to let the sun raise. The amber light is beautiful and soothing, simulating the sun in our otherwise dark room. By the time the alarm is ready to go off, the SmartSleep is bright. Peering through my eyelids the yellow light coerces me awake, but not bright enough to wake up my wife. Using this gradual wake up method I notice I have a bit more energy and I'm not startled awake by the alarm clock. The SmartSleep is steep and may not be beneficial to all. However, in my personal experience, I am happy and feel more energetic. That to me, is worth it.
