Good choice for small drive
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.A nice little drive. Has a downloadable utility to set the maximum drive speed. This is to control drive noise while in operation. It is pretty loud when set on standard or performance mode. But, on quiet mode, it is very quiet. Not that it is louder than any other optical drive out there, just more noticeable because instead of being enclosed in a computer case, it most typically sits out on top your desk. All in all, has a lot of features for the money and is compatible with a wide variety of media.

Excellent Blu-ray drive for Mac users
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I've been using this Pioneer drive + MakeMKV with my 27" iMac for four months and it works flawlessly. I use it to make backup copies of Blu-ray discs I own and I write to BD-RE DL 50GB 1-2X media with no issues. The clamshell design is great because it allows the drive to be thinner and have a smaller footprint than the apple superdrive, which of course does not support blu-ray. The drive costs a little more than some on the market but after getting a less expensive drive that didn't work with MakeMKV, I'm glad the Pioneer was my next purchase.

Blu ray works
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Works fine as a blu ray player. Only needs one USB connection if it is USB 3 (has the blue thing in the cable). A bit loud but nobody cares.

Great product for computers without drives
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I actually needed a drive so I could record music cd's and get it onto my computer. A lot of newer laptops now do not come with any CD/dvd drives so I wanted one that could also play Bluray movies as well as record data. This unit was not much more money than just cd/dvd recorder. Just make sure your computer has USB 3.0 if you plan to watch Bluray movies with it.

Great Blu-ray USB-3.0 Drive
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This Blu-ray drive work flawlessly with my Lenovo X1 Carbon Ultrabook. I only have to use one of my USB-3.0 ports to power this drive. I have used it to watch movies on Blu-ray and DVD. I consider this a must have drive for people that own Ultrabooks.

Good Value
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I bought this to use with a MS Surface book. Connected through the Surface or the dock's USB ports it plays dvds and read data discs just fine. It doesn't receive enough power to play blu rays however unless you connect the USB power cord to a USB wall outlet or charger. As others have stated it is a pretty LOUD drive. If I planned on dedicating it watching movies, I might find it a bit annoying, but mostly I plan on using it to pull data from blu rays and dvds.

When you need a Blu-ray drive...
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Apple computers have never come with Blu-ray drives, necessitating getting a 3rd party external drive. The unit works well, but be warned that you'll also need to buy software (between $25- $50) if you want it to actually play Blu-rays on your mac (it's good to burn Blu-rays without the software). It works well, but still a little annoying Apple never even made a drive (they'd probably charge a lot more though if they did).

Needed USB Hub to use
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Purchased quickly, on the (dragon) fly, with new MacBook Pro Laptop, missing DVD/CD drive. Haven't used much, however playback worked excellent, except being noticeably noisy during loading portion, before movies. Included instruction manual doesn’t picture or (by the numbers) explain the onscreen control panel for the player. And on-screen dashboard, doesn't clearly Label an "Eject" function. (It's in upper right of the rectangular dashboard: the top corner "Pointing Down" arrow). Huh? Now that I know what to look for, on-screen, remotely ejects discs perfectly. To be fair, probably explained in Pioneer's online owner's manuals website. Why it's not with the comprehensive box instructions/specs baffles me. BUT BE CAREFUL, before leaving store. If your laptop does not have TWO 3.0 USB ports side by side, (MacBook Pro has one USB each side.) then this player REQUIRES you buying a USB hub because the supplied cable setup OBVIOUSLY WAY too short: 3 inches. No kidding. I measured. (Reminiscent of buying printer and then finding out it doesn't come supplied with correct cable, only power cord.) Went back to BestBuy. Then when home AGAIN from BestBuy, after buying USB Hub, the manual reads: "Connecting this unit through a USB hub or using unspecified cables may not guarantee proper operation." Awesome! Outside of box omits important detail. This Pioneer says it's powered best and works optimally with 2 USB 3.0 ports... and of course... the manual, INSIDE THE BOX, let's you know you're computer might not be powerful enough "if you have lesser USB ports".... so you will need to "connect an AC adapter (NOT INCLUDED) using a wall outlet. Pioneer just happens to have some of those. Probably would have purchased external Apple drive if it handled Blu-ray. (Because Hey, Retina Display, why not Blu-ray?) Before reviewing above Pioneer player, I reviewed MacBook Pro for BestBuy and made an error. AudioQuest Dragonfly DAC devices are for enhancing headphones, and not speakers. Sorry. Okay, reviewed this Pioneer as Average because overall, if you're the kind of shopper who opens the box before buying stuff and reads the instructions first, all of them, diligently-- You got this. Unfortunately my shirt reads "Tech Blunder" not "Tech Wonder". My pet saying: "Plug and play, all the way". Not fond of complicated. Must admit, the whole review been calling this a Pioneer Player, when outside of the box boldly states: Pioneer Blu-ray BURNER. Own Pioneer A/V Receiver. Really respect Pioneer (Elite) brand. One of my favorites, and exactly why I didn't even bother researching BestBuy review site, before buying Pioneer product. Excellent playback (5 stars) minus poor instructions (2 stars) equals 3 stars overall. Even with tech info setback, and being forced to buy USB Hub accessory, I'm hoping to enjoy another Pioneer for many years.

Works (for the most part) on Linux
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Purchased this because I wanted an optical drive for my laptop that lacks such a drive and this seemed to be the best choice for bluray and DVD. Can't speak for the disc burning function as I've not used it for that yet. Overall it serves my intended purpose: watching DVD/BD movies. Things of note: - This item is ONLY the drive itself. You will need to obtain the proper libs/software to get any sort of playback or disc burning functionality. Even so, you may find some BD unplayable as is the nature of the beast with Linux and bluray. - I did not update firmware for the drive, only used the playback libs/software. - Has a port for 5V DC if you have need of external power for this device, however, cables for this are not included. Only a USB3.0/2.0 cable is included in the box, which is generally how this drive is powered. - It does have a (small) manual switch on the bottom of the unit to open the drive, in case you unplugged before removing the disc. - I find the drive is fairly warm to the touch during use. - Used with Void GNU/Linux and Artix Linux on LTS kernel 4.14.44+ Good luck and enjoy.
