For those of you interested in exploring the early days of the bank known as Pink Floyd. This band would go on to become one of the most successful bands of all time, this the first of 3 major Pink Floyd eras. This early era in Floyd’s history saw the band (Roger Waters, Nick mason and Richard wright) with original lead singer Sid Barrett. It’s difficult to explain exactly what happened to Sid, some say drugs, others say mental illness but regardless of what caused the departure of the inspiration behind Floyd’s later hit Shine On You Crazy Diamond, it was unfortunately Sid’s destiny to leave Pink Floyd after their second album as he was replaced by David Gilmore which solidified the second Floyd era. Arguably the greatest era of Floyd and without a doubt the most successful albums Pink Floyd created with this lineup. After many years of success Pink Floyd ended this era with the lackluster release of Final Cut in the mid 1980s. Several years later the band would reunite for A Momentary Lapse of Reason followed by The Division Bell but the lineup did not include Roger Waters who was the main creative force behind Floyd after the departure of Sid Barrett. Water’s tried to stop the band from creating and touring under the Floyd name but was unsuccessful. This allowed Pink Floyd to become one of the most successful touring acts of the 90s, something that would haunt Waters as he would be playing small 2-3,000 seat venues next to football stadiums even claiming that he was forced to listen to the bank play his songs with most fans completely unaware of Waters contribution due to the anonymity that Pink Floyd created so they could allow the music to play center stage as opposed to the personalities. Pink Floyd with Roger Waters finally reunited in 2008 playing an unforgettable 20 min set for the Live 8 performance. This would be the final time the band would play due to the passing of Richard Wright. Roger Waters finally began to get the credit he deserved in the mid 2000s when he started to tour playing Dark Side of The Moon in its entirety and eventually the amazing production of The Wall that went on for nearly 3 years. As recently as 2022 Waters is the only member of Pink Floyd that is selling out arenas across the globe and many fans were hoping for a reunion which is something that Gilmore and Waters have both said will never happen. As time goes on the possibility of a Pink Floyd reunion seems highly unlikely but 2022 also brought a reunion of the name Pink Floyd which included drummer Nick Mason and lead guitarist/vocalist David Gilmore release a song in support of Ukraine with proceeds being sent to the country to assist aide them with the ongoing Russian invasion. Pink Floyd has released an amazing catalog of music that has influenced fans from the late 1960s through today and though there have been a few different incarnations of the band it all started with this album. There are no major hits that are on rotation on classic rock stations, the album isn’t referenced on any Rolling Stone articles that list out classic albums and most fans only know the name and legend of Sid Barrett instead of the musical contributions… but that is not because this album isn’t amazing. The sounds show the early stages of the band that was to come but if you’re interested in the music that started it all then I highly recommend you check this album out with an open mind. You won’t be disappointed.
