Such a timeless holiday movie that brings a smile to my face every time I watch this classic. I really enjoy the added bonus features and the digital copy. You can’t go wrong with this John Hughes movie. Be sure to add this to your movie collection.

John Hughes' classic road picture is now 26 years old, so there's a good chance that if you're under 30 you may not have seen it. See it.
The movie is more or less perfect. Tiresome complications that wreck most comedies are avoided here by a minimalist cast of two and an almost non-plot: wealthy man from Chicago who commutes to New York wants to get home in time for Thanksgiving weekend, but along the way he picks up a shower curtain ring salesman who attaches to him like a mollusk to a rock. Fast start, followed by sequence upon sequence of ever increasing levels of disaster and hilarity. Even the lulls have forward motion that advances either character or the next futile attempt to reach Chicago. No longuers. No overly long monologues from characters trying to EXPLAIN themselves, which make the Hughes teen comedies a little embarrassing to watch. This is screenwriting at its most stringent.
Martin and Candy are two sides of the same coin: Both are in "sales and marketing". Despite the surface difference between glossy magazine layouts and shower curtain rings, the men essentially have the same job, and have to travel to do it. One side is insular, deeply competitive and at odds with a hostile world that must be "got through" in order to get home; the other side is gregarious and taking in the world with open arms with hardly a thought of getting back home. Their very difference is what makes them similar to one another. The result is a buddy picture that's funnier than almost all the rest, and yet more personal because we've got to know each man's internal contradictions so well. After about 1 hour and 20 minutes of mostly farcical situations, Hughes takes the last 5 minutes to sucker-punch us with an emotional and poignant finale.
"Planes, Trains, and Automobiles" was the high point of a career that sadly withered away even before Hughes left the world too soon. John Candy left us too soon, too. But at least we can be grateful that, while they were alive, they made this funny and wonderful movie. 5 out of 5.

In case of EMP use disk to signal messenger pigeons. They also use empty Blu-ray cases as currency in the future.

What do you get when you let John Candy and Steve Martin Co-Star in a movie? Answer: Lots of laughs. This movie is a Christmas movie but not the kind you'd expect. It's a classic and the kind of movie you'll see more than once.

This could be my favorite holiday movies ever. It combines the comic genius of Steve Martin and John Candy, who play off of each other like the pros that they are. There are so many relatable scenes that make you really feel for the characters.

Possibly John Hughes funniest film. It manages to be both hilarious and touching in equal measure and there are few films some salty language not withstanding that are worth watching with a family of all ages.

The Broader Message

I would like to offer something more substantive than how much I love this movie or how I watch it every Thanksgiving as other reviewers have offered. This John Hughes directed, produced, and written film is a far departure from many of the alleged comedies that grace the movie theatres these days that rely on gross out humor, sexual innuendo amped up to ten, or situations that are stretched to wildly fantastic levels of absurdity. Planes, Trains and Automobiles is an old school comedy with a message about finding friendship in unexpected places.
Neil Page (Steve Martin) plays an uptight advertising executive trying to get home to his family in Chicago for Thanksgiving. Page’s plans and attitude changes when he meets the loveable, if somewhat grating shower curtain ring salesman Del Griffith (John Candy). Through a series of spectacular incidents, the polar opposites become bonded together as they make their way throughout the Midwest in an effort to get Neil home for Thanksgiving.
Beyond having two comedy masters in Candy and Martin and the grand vision of John Hughes, Planes, Trains, and Automobiles succeeds in my view because the situation is highly realistic---I mean who hasn’t had a trip that hasn’t gone according to plan? The viewer feels like he could be one of these characters either the desperate to get home Neil Page who wants time with his family or Del Griffith who is desperate for a friend or in a broader sense a home.

Planes and trains is a hilarious movie. Steve Martin and John Candy are a perfect match; not for little kids due to language, but heartwarming and an annual must see movie every holiday season.

A great movie from 2 comedy legends who sadly left us way too soon. A terrific tale of compassion for your fellow man no matter how different they may seem from ourselves. A holiday classic.

I've never laughed so hard in my life. The scene where they are going down the interstate the wrong way and pass between oncoming tractor-trailers left me in stitches, that alone made me buy this.

You probably wouldn't think Steve Martin and John Candy would make for a good comedy duo, but when you have John Hughes directing, all bets are off. This has to be one of my favorite movies of all time.

Love this movie a lot . The only thing that seems to be misleading and confusing the cover is not the same picture on line. You don't get the same cover that you see when you order this. movie.
