Good movie by Robert Rodriguez; gives you the feeling of being in the 70's at an actual grindhouse theater.

    A deliberate guilty pleasure

While Quentin Tarantino's Death Proof seems to be a much more authentic representation of 1970s grindhouse pictures, Robert Rodriguez' Planet Terror is more of a loving caricature of 1980s zombie splatter films. Nothing in the film is played straight, and virtually every scene is accompanied by a wink and a grin at the audience. If Tarantino's effort is accused of being slow (or deliberately paced, depending on your opinion), Planet Terror never even thinks about slowing down. From the exploitative opening credits through to the final frames of the film, this is a roller coaster ride of a film that doesn't let up. With Planet Terror, Robert Rodriguez continues his "everything and the kitchen sink" mentality when it comes to his filmmaking by throwing everything at the wall just to see what sticks. While it sometimes feels like this technique gets in the way of Rodriguez finding a true filmmaking voice, it works quite well for a film like Planet Terror where there's no room for subtlety. The cast that Rodriguez assembled is a glorious ensemble of bygone action heroes, horror icons, and Rodriguez stock actors. They all bring their parts to life in a cartoonish sort of way that fits the tone of the movie beautifully. While the uncut DVD edition of Planet Terror doesn't change the film drastically in any way, it definitely improves the film. It gives the film smoother transitions and fills in some gaps in the plot (though that missing reel is still there and will always remain there as one of the many comical winks at the audience). The large cast of characters are also given more beats here and there that help fill out their personas a little more. All in all, this uncut version simply allows the film to breathe a little more, rather than having to jump frantically from scene to scene in an effort to make the 84 minute running time. At the end of the day, Planet Terror isn't going to win any awards, and it's certainly not meant to. It's simply an extremely enjoyable guilty pleasure of a film that virtually anyone with the stomach for it can probably have a good time with, especially if you're a horror fan. Take a couple of classic John Carpenter films like The Fog and Escape From New York and throw them into a blender with a couple of classic zombie splatter films like Evil Dead 2 and Dawn of the Dead and you've got a pretty good idea of what Planet Terror is like. And at the end of the day, you could definitely have a worse combination of films to pay loving homage to.

***DO NOT EAT BEFORE OR DURING THIS MOVIE*** (I was planning on popping up a bag of popcorn before watching this movie. I'm soooo glad I didn't.) For starters, I am not a Robert Rodriguez fan in any way, shape or form. I watched this movie strictly because it had Quentin Tarantino's name attached to it. With it's absurdly laughable plot, over the top, incredibly gruesome, graphically gory special effects, wonderfully scratchy, fuzzy, 70's "nostalgic feel", "Planet Terror" can be summed up in 2 words. ABSOLUTELY AWESOME. This movie delivers on so many levels. It's one of those movies you have to "get" in order to enjoy. When watching this movie, do not take it seriously, as this movie in no way takes itself seriously. It was meant in the vein of the darkest form of black comedy, and delivers tenfold. This is a movie for "guys who like movies" and in NO WAY should be shown to children. This one is NOT FOR THE KIDDIES. I never thought much about Rose McGowan before watching this movie. She was "cutesy cute" in "Scream", but, in this movie, she is the ultimate definition of "Ssssssssmokin'!!!!!!!!!!" I just whish I had caught this one in the theaters as the true double-bill it was meant to be. Eventhough it bombed at the box office, this movie deserves every bit of the cult status it has achieved. Definitely a MUST OWN on DVD. ABSOLUTELY LOVED IT!!!!!

    planet terror will rock you!

planet terror will rip through your tv screen on 10-16-07 with ott action with a vengence for blood and gore. most people will tell you that if they had to pick one of the grindhouse films, it would be this one over death proof. this film has more violence and gore than death proof. it's also got more laughs and cheezy one-liners. it also has more of that grindhouse feel. the movie will look kind of tattered and old, like it was run through the grinder, spit on and kicked around, or the reel operator is having trouble. death proof only carried this feel through the first half of the film, the second half looks more finished. the only thing i'm disapointed about is that the dvd is only 86 minutes! that means that they will be giving you the theatrical version plus 3 or 4 minutes of uncut material. i wanted a longer version like death proof's 114 minute version.

I only purchased this movie because I got the five dollars off in a manufacturer's coupon that came with with purchase of "Death Proof" As you may know, Death Proof and Planet Terror were released together as the double feature "Grindhouse". Before you think that buying these two movies seperately is just as good as buying them together, realize that the grindhouse experience as one fluid movie is irreplacable, as are the gag trailers appearing in the theatrical release but not this DVD. I was suckered into buying both Planet Terror and Death Proof as they were released seperately because they have been advertised as being extended and unrated. My advice to anyone who is wanting to purchase one or both of these fine films is to wait awhile just to see if the powers that be don't come out with a super box set with Grindhouse intact and uncut like it should be. However, if you were like me and you couldn't wait to buy both films as soon as they came out, then by all means, add some style points to your DVD collection.

The steelbook adds a nice little touch you get the free bonus disc which includes 47 minutes of Q&A type stuff with director Robert Rodriguez. I would recommend the steelbook version for the true fans of the movie. Although the case is much more appealing to the eye the only other difference is the bonus disc. I've been waiting for months for this DVD realese. I have to say I was a little specticle at first for them being released seperatly. I think it was a great idea now they are two way differant films and to get the real feel they should be seperate. Plus you get to see scenes that weren't in the original you saw in theatres! I would highly suggest if your a fan of this movie. Or even a fan of Rodriguez's work get the steelbook!

    Funniest Zombie Movie Ever

Sit Back and enjoy the fun of this hilarious and action packed gore-thrill ride. In the small town of Austin, Texas at an old military base, a Chemical called DC2 is released into the air, causing the entire town to become flesh eating zombies. and only a few in this small town are strong enough to survive the outbreak: Cherry Darling, a Go Go Dancer, is a stripper with an altitude who takes no S*&% from anybody around and kicks A%& on the Side. El Wray, A former Military Man who is unstoppable with a gun. Dr. Dakota Block, An anesthesiologist with a Deadly Skill with a Needle. This movie is probily one of the best comedies of the year even though categorized as a horror movie. U will be Laughing From The beginning To the End.

For any Rodriguez fan out there you will enjoy this very stylish 80's vibe horror flick. Its a unique zombie flick with a star studded cast that includes Rose McGowan, Bruce Willis, Josh Brolin, Rebel Rodriguez, Marley Shelton, Freddy Rodriguez & Stacey Ferguson. This film is a must for all horror fanatics out there. Its not for everyone and definitely not for children! The blood is great and as for character development you won't sit there guessing thinking that character was a waste of time. I highly recommend it and definitely recommend you check out Death Proof before seeing this fill,. All I will say is that you will see familiar characters..

After searching a bit, I was able to nab this steelbook edition at my local Best Buy yesterday, on the day of release. There were only a couple copies left. I was also able to grab the steelbook version of Death Proof the day that came out. I'm getting the impression these are pretty rare -- anyone have an idea how rare they really are? Btw, I love the movie. It was amazing as part of that Grindhouse experience in theaters but still holds up quite well on its own on dvd, with seemingly a lot more gore as well. And as with nearly all Robert Rodriguez movies, there are plenty of excellent extras, including the trailer for Machete!

The better half of the Grindhouse

Compared to Death Proof, this is easily the best part of the Grindhouse. Flesh eating zombies, evil doctors, gun toting truck drivers with mysterious pasts, Planet Terror has it all. With its gore driven plot, sick humor, and one of the most outrageous female characters to ever grace the screen, Planet Terror is a perfect choice for fans of Robert Rodriguez's work. Some might find it over the top, too violent, a story with gaping holes, but thats how it was meant to be, a tribute to the Grindhouse films of the past, and in that sense it suceeds wonderfully.
