New Upgrade the Polaroid Instant Camera

I have been a Polaroid Instant Camera user from the B&W Swinger Model 20 of the 1960s, the Polaroid Land Camera SX70 (pull out) to the more recent Polaroid 600. Initially I thought that the new Polaroid Now+ Instant Camera was just a more advanced Polaroid 600. I was very wrong. The Polaroid Now+ Instant Camera is a far cry from even the 600. The Polaroid Now+ comes with 2 packs of Instant i-Type film packs (8 pictures each), a USB-A to USB-B charging cord, neck strap, quick start guide, lens cover and 5 lens filters in their own pouch. Instead of the film packs having the battery, the Now+ Camera has the battery that’s rechargeable with the USB charging cord. This is a great plus in that you no longer have to worry about the battery being dead in the film pack and thus not being able to take pictures. The Polaroid Now+ battery lasts for about 15 pictures before having to be recharged. Each picture costs a little over $1.00 making them somewhat pricey. I wouldn’t let my small cousins use it unless they really know how to take great pictures in one shot. The neck strap is just a thin nylon strap, but, because the camera is light weight it suits the purpose just fine. The Polaroid Now+ Instant Camera has a built-in flash which can be set to off or automatic with a push of the button on the back of the camera instead of a flash cube or pull up flash unit. The i-Type film packs are the same size as the older Polaroid film packs and are inserted into the camera the same way. After taking a picture, the photo comes out covered by a plastic film. When the film is lifted up, the picture pops out. For best development the photo should be placed upside down for a few minutes to keep light from disrupting it from developing properly. The Polaroid Now+ Camera can also be managed through a cell phone app. The Polaroid app can mange the Now+ Camera, Polaroid Lab and Polaroid OneStep+ on the Home Page. There’s also a tab for My Photo Album and Polaroid Photo Scanner. The app’s Now+ tab has several functions that are linked to the Camera: Remote, Self-timer, Double Exposure, Aperture, Tripod, Portrait, Light Paining (tap the flashlight button to add extra lighting to a subject), and Manual. The Manual option allows the user to set aperture and shutter speed for photos. The app can be downloaded from Google Play or Apple App Store and is free to use. For instant pictures and ease of use, The Polaroid Now+ Instant Camera is an excellent choice. In conjunction with the Polaroid app, The Polaroid Now+ has more functions and special effects options than its predecessors. The Now+ can also be attached to a tripod. The one major drawback of the Polaroid Now+ Instant Camera is that the battery in the camera doesn’t seem to be removable. Maybe with the next generation of Polaroid Instant Cameras, rechargeable batteries will be able to be changed when the charge runs out. This way, the user can use one battery and when that runs out, can replace it with a fully charged one. I do recommend the Polaroid Now+ Instant Camera for those people that like Instant cameras with a bonus of several other functions.

    Modern Nostalgia?

What does modern nostalgia mean? Imagine taking a vintage Polaroid film camera and updating it with bluetooth smartphone app features such as double exposure, adjustable aperture, adjustable shutter speed, and more. It is nostalgic in a sense that my family had one when I was a kid and while it felt more solidly built, it was nowhere near as capable as the current version of course. While you can get some really fun light trails and effects by using the included lens filters (and a tripod), the final developed result is still about the same quality from when I was a kid. That is also part of the charm of using a Polaroid film camera in 2021. As mentioned above, the app is a really nice (and easy to use) addition to the Polaroid shooting experience. Being able to adjust exposure levels through the app is great for more advanced shooters. I never thought of using a polaroid camera for light painting but if you want to drag the shutter and get some cool effects with light, you can do so. That said, you are using very expensive film packs so be sure you calculate your scene accordingly before you shoot. The same goes for the included lens filters. Be sure to visualize your shot (and your exposure if shooting manual) before you shoot. Searching for “Polaroid Now Plus Filters” should show you what kind of results you can get using the filters so you know what you are getting into before you put one on the lens. Setup was also a breeze out of the box and after app install/pairing, I was shooting within minutes. The build quality seems pretty solid but still feels plasticy so I recommend using the included strap around your neck as I am not sure it would survive much of a fall. For the time being and near future, USB-C should be standard, but this still uses USB-B (Micro). The cable is provided but I would like to see more manufacturers adopt USB-C so there are less cables in the trash. Film is absolutely expensive and plays into the printer way of thinking… Once you purchase the camera for a moderate price, you are stuck paying a small fortune to keep using it. While the experience of using a Polaroid camera is fun, the price you pay to feed it with film needs to be mentioned. In a digital world, make sure you slow down your shooting process to a snail's pace. Literally think out your shots before pressing the shutter. If you are shooting people, be sure they are absolutely ready and posed correctly, tell them to keep their eyes open, then press the shutter button when you feel it is the perfect moment. You get eight frames per film pack so shoot like you mean it. Lastly, I also highly recommend a photo album to keep your film safe rather than stacking them up like the old days. PROS: App features make it very versatile and creative Film color science is better these days The flash is FAR superior to the old units Styling is on point Standard tripod socket! Fun and easy to use CONS: Final image quality is pretty basic and still like the vintage units Takes a while to develop so be patient Film is EXPENSIVE

I've always been a fan of polaroid cameras and had a fair share of them over the years, but this one was nostalgic of the one my parents had when I was a child. I may sound like an old-timer by saying this (although I'm a Millennial), but having a Polaroid camera makes you appreciate the imperfectly perfect moments captured on the 3.5 x 4.5 film. It reminds you that life is not just about the Instagram-worthy moments, but also the little ones that you can only capture in the moment. Sometimes the moment is perfect, sometimes it's not. But that is just a part of life. With that said, the build is pretty sturdy and one that I would proudly display on my desk even when not in use. What gives it a nice upgrade is that it's rechargeable and comes with a few different fun lenses to try. Let your creative juices flow! You can also pair it with your phone through Bluetooth to the Polaroid app to take advantage of the settings: remote, self-timer, double exposure, change aperture, tripod (mount camera on a tripod), portrait, and light painting. Pretty cool features for sure! Although - probably one of the biggest downfalls for me was the inability to use the app to preview the photo I'm about to take. Especially since the film is pretty expensive, around almost $2 apiece which you'd really have to make sure that those photos count. or wind up with a super dark photo (the first one I took), or not capturing the right frame. Perhaps something they'll explore in the future (?). I'm excited to see where Polaroid decides to take this technology next. Overall, I'm really loving it and can't wait to take holiday photos with it!

    Fun instant photo device

    >> Overview The Polaroid Now+ seemed a very promising instant camera. The camera comes with a very useful phone App to control the device over Bluetooth and it can be attached with color filters to catch your happy moments with some fun. I am a newbie with respect to instant cameras, and I was eager to use it at parties and gatherings at home and share happy moments with friends and family. After going through two sets of 8 instant pictures and trying a few settings and suggestions, I went from very bad looking pictures to “ok” looking pictures. I have taken outdoors and indoors pictures and I think I’ll still need more photo takes before getting pictures that look more colorful and clearer than the ones I’ve been getting so far. I came to a realization that my expectation of having an instant picture look close/similar to what a printed one from your point-and-shoot camera would look like is not realistic, it is just one limitation that you have to take into account when deciding to buy/use one. Nevertheless, there is a lot of fun of using this device, but fun that comes at a cost as the film is pricey. - Pros: Stylish, color filters, instant pictures ready to give out! - Cons: needs manual adjustments to get good pictures, not suitable for low light outdoor conditions, film is just too expensive. >> Setup There is not much to the setup, just follow the instructions in the colorful booklet that comes with it. Just one thing to do is to charge the device before configuring and first use. I did that just in case. Then I proceeded to setup the phone App. It was nice to control some of the settings from the phone App, no need to add any LCD display for that on the camera itself. Then I loaded the cartridge with the film, and I was ready to shoot. >> First use On my first use, I decided to try the device indoors, and not touch any setting, as I thought the “default” mode/settings would be enough to take good quality pictures. The ambient had 40W yellow lights and I placed the target about 4-5 feet away from the camera against a somehow dark background. The first pictures came out too dark and disappointing. Something similar happened when taking pictures outdoors. Here in the Pacific Northwest, the days have been cloudy but still looked “bright” enough, but not bright enough to get clear enough pictures. As a result, it was a disappointing experience. I reached out to Polaroid, and I was given some suggestions on how to better take better looking pictures (see below). >> Taking pictures indoors It is recommended to take photos indoors always with flash. I tried the low light exposure indoors, and the result was an almost black picture, so definitely, as it was recommended to me by Polaroid, use flash with a wall behind to bounce back the flash to the camera and place the target about 3-4 feet away. By doing that I was able to get better looking pictures. Changing the exposure/aperture is another thing you can do to get clearer pictures. You can do that using the phone App, but you can also do it from the device itself. The latter is something I didn’t know and that I couldn’t find mentioned in the booklet that comes with the device. The trick is to press and hold the flash button on the camera, next a horizontal line will appear where the LED counter for the number of pictures left on the device is located, the line in the middle is for “normal” settings, but pressing the flash button again, it will move, and you can choose to have brighter photos (line up) or darker ones (line down). So far, I don’t want to take many risks and I have been keeping the line to the top (brighter) when taking photos. >> Taking pictures outdoors As I already mentioned, I took pictures during cloudy days, and the results were just bad. For outdoors, it looks like you just want to have very clear skies and better sunny days in order to get nice pictures. I’d expect to use the color filters when things get sunny in Seattle (at this point, next Spring/Summer). >> Having fun Yeah, you can have the fun of your life with the device, but with the caveat that you could end up with pictures not looking the best (or perhaps that is what you want). I am not sure I would want to recommend this device, or any other instant camera to a friend, though. But if you decide to buy one, I’d think this polaroid is a fine device for instant photo taking.

Hi Goncho, using an analog camera can take some getting used to, but it's worth it! When shooting indoors, it's best to have your subject stand in front of a wall or backdrop to bounce the flash back to the camera or you may end up with very dark backgrounds because the flash can only reach about 6-7 feet max. PRODUCT OVERVIEW The Polaroid Now + camera produces full-size Polaroids that give off the classic hazy analog look. It’s best to work with plenty of lighting and medium or long shots. The package comes with 16 films (2 packs of 8 films) which gave me a chance to play around with different modes. It also comes with 5 lens filters, a lens cover, and a pouch in which to store them. I love that this camera has a mounting point on the base. I was able to put this on my tripod seamlessly. OVERALL THOUGHTS Overall, I like the classic look of the camera and film when I get a good shot. The app UI is great but had higher hopes for the functionality. I may not recommend it to beginners unless they’re willing to purchase extra film to account for any unfavorable outcomes. I would recommend it to experienced hobbyists or professionals who will be able to assess the environment, lighting, etc and take advantage of manual mode in the app. If you’re thinking about this item as a gift, keep in mind the cost of the film moving forward as well as how experienced the user is. I captured some satisfactory shots but also a lot of duds with my 16 films. It’s disappointing to have errors in the trial given the limited amount of film but photography is a learned skill that requires practice. MODES, FEATURES & POLAROID ORIGINALS APP As a point and shoot, the Polaroid Now + is fun to use and some modes are easier to use than others. Self-timer and Double Exposure are easy to access and are available in-camera while additional modes are available in the Polaroid Originals mobile app. - LIGHT PAINTING The app offers many features but I did run into some connectivity issues as well as not being able to take full advantage of Light Painting mode. I was unable to use Light Painting mode as the shutter would not stay open like the app said it would. I ended up wasting 3 films attempting this mode which is a shame because that’s almost half a pack. - DOUBLE EXPOSURE I had better luck using Double Exposure indoors than I did in outdoor sunny conditions. I found that this mode lets a lot of light in; kind of obvious since it’s exposing twice, but definitely something to consider when playing around. AUTO FOCUS & EXPOSURE The camera will automatically choose between the 2-zone auto focus. The recommendation is at least 1.8 ft distance from the subject, but I found even that’s too close and may focus on the background instead of the subject like it did for me. I ended up getting a couple of over exposed shots even though I did not change the exposure in-camera. I did hold down the flash button to check out how to use the in-camera exposure settings but I left it in the middle and somehow got overexposed pictures outdoors even though the previous day I got well exposed images in the same amount of sunlight. The app will allow you to tinker with the exposure way more than the camera itself. LENS FILTERS The colored filters are neat. They give off a heavy tint and still leave some original colorings of the scene. The orange and yellow are light enough that they don’t affect the overall brightness of the photo. The blue filter is visibly darker so I don’t suggest it for low light or anything that’s even slightly back-lit. The red vignette filter is probably my favorite; it looks really cool in my opinion. Haven’t been able to use the light-burst filter to its fullest potential but it did give my photos an even more hazy look.

Classic Camera with Cool Creativity Boosters

TLDR: (that’s Too Long, Didn’t Read) Everything you love about instant analog photography plus some useful creativity tools in an app. Pros: * Simple controls. * Easy onboard control for basic adjustments. * Light and easy to carry. * Classic styling with snazzy stripes. Cons: * Steep learning curve if your first experience with analog instant photography. * Expensive per-shot costs. Summary: I’ve been a hobby level digital photographer for about 30 years. My first digital camera was a Casio with a now-laughable 320x240 resolution. I loved the benefits of a nearly Infinite camera roll and instant reviews of my shots. Over the years, digital camera resolution and quality has drastically improved, but at the end of the day, a digital photograph is still just a digital copy. Long before digital cameras emerged, a Polaroid camera was the ONLY way to take a photo and see the results per-shot without having to develop an entire roll. Polaroids were cool before instant digital photography was available. I applaud Polaroid for keeping instant analog photography alive! Today, its advantages are mostly as a unique creative tool. The Polaroid Now+ is yet another extension of the groundbreaking Polaroid camera for creators. The “+” part mainly offers a BTLE (Bluetooth Low Energy) connection with an app on your phone. This type of connection doesn’t require pairing so it’s fast and easy to use. The app enables a lot of cool creative tools like a remote shutter, full manual controls, double-exposure and light painting that basically is a really long exposure so you can “draw” with the light from your phone (or a flashlight, etc.). The is a nice addition, but you can also do a lot without it. There are only four buttons on the actual camera but they allow you to do a lot of stuff fairly easily. The shutter and power buttons basically do what you’d expect of them. The Flash button doubles not only to turn the flash off for the next photo or until the next power cycle but can also temporarily adjust the camera’s exposure to “more”, “normal” or “less.” This model now has a “+” button on the front which is used to set a self-timer, start a double exposure mode or do whatever favorite mode you assigned from the app. You can also hold that “+” button while turning the camera on to get a more detailed battery level reading on the single-digit display. Being used to instant digital photography, most of my first 8 photos did not come out well. Polaroids really love light and a steady hand. For me, getting used to analog instant photography has been a steep learning curve but one that I’m sure will pay off with creative results that are not easy to match with a now-ubiquitous digital camera. I really enjoy the classic styling of this camera and enjoy the colorful stripes on the front. The eyepiece is rubberized for comfort and the provided shoulder straps are easily removable if you need to do so. There’s a tripod mount on the bottom for steadier shots and the supplied creative lenses add some flair to your photos; although they are a tad cumbersome to store in the provided canvas roll which does not have a way to clip it to anything. I especially liked the effects of the Starburst filter but the others have uses as well. If you’re used to Polaroid photography and are looking for more tools to express your creativity, this camera will not let you down. If you’re new to analog instant photography, you might want to buy a few extra packs of film to go with your camera so you can experiment and get used to the differences of shooting analog. Either way, you won’t be disappointed in this medium where each photo is a unique one-of-a-kind.

Review of Polaroid Now Plus. The camera is extraordinary that can image new way of experience with the classic photography. It comes with 5 filters, a USB charging cable, neck strap loop. The camera it self is easy to understand each buttons function at first glance, Connecting to the app process doesn’t get notice at all. In this aspect, as soon as download the app, and turn on bluetooth from the camera, immediate get connected without having to do the pre connection via bluetooth function from the phone. However, the use of the application feels bit odd as there seems to be lot of cool functions but felt alike lost. The application has function for self portrait, light painting, manual, self timer, double exposure, aperture, tripod, under the region My Now +. But to understand how it work each of them need multiple times trial and error process. For instance for portrait, it has indicator of if too close or too far, too dark and so on. I was not able to find when it is ready in first trial and gave up to use the shutter button from the camera. The camera itself I find cool and the fact that it can get connected and controlled via mobile phone makes greater imagination. But actually using the application it takes some time of usage at least from my end.

I received this camera and down loaded the app for my phone. This is very similar to the older version of the instant film camera I remember as a kid except easier. Now you just take and shoot and put the picture face down for a bit instead of shaking it to get it to develop. The app is useful for taking remote pictures with the camera mounted on a tripod. Even though it connects to a Phone by Bluetooth it is not the normal way and took a bit to figure out but works great. If you are in the need for needing some right now pictures this is the camera for you. It even comes with some Lense filters to change the look of your pictures

Polaroid is now in the 20th century. I've always had a love for the Polaroid film since I was a kid and these caneras were in all the household's. I love the included app and all the features it includes. The remote switch is awesome!! Lightpainting, double exposure, timer, portrait mode and more!! You can also upload phone pics and have them made into Polaroid type pics. I didn't have much luck with the lense filters. I definitely need more practice with them. The lense case and camera strap are definitely handy. Hope they keep up the retro look and feel. Brings back tons of memories.

This Polaroid really brings me back to the time these were extremely popular and used my families across the US to capture their favorite moments. The build quality and quirky design are amazingly great and my kids instantly wanted to touch and play with it. At nearly $2 per picture however, I wasn’t going to just give them free access to it without some supervision!!! That’s really the only negative in my opinion that will prevent me from using this more but it will definitely come with us on family trips to capture and immediately develop some pictures. Lastly, make sure to place the pictures face down for a outside 15 mins after taking the pictures while they develop or they will come out dark. Fanning them like the old ones doesn’t work to speed up development. Also while the camera does have a flash, good natural light photos will turn out out the best. Great blast from the past camera that will capture another generation of family moments!!!
