Went from 40 to 90Mbps! Covers entire home!

The Portal router is awesome - it doubled my speed from 40 to 90Mbps! I was using an older Airport Extreme router from which I switch over to the Portal and couldn't be happier! =) My home is about 1,260 sq. ft. with a big back yard. I get WiFi everywhere in the house now. I am able to easily stream on Chromecast, Fire TV stick, and even in the backyard on my iPhone! Previously with the Airport Extreme Netflix used to buffer a lot and take time to load the videos - it's now instant! It makes the wife happy too, which is great! Portal was super easy to setup and took just a few minutes, there was a one time update that took place after which its working like a charm. I only needed one router for my home and property, if you have larger home mesh might make sense. I haven't tried any of the advanced settings they have, out of the box settings work just fine for me.

Excellent product that embraces new technology

As an early adopter on Kickstarter, I decided to fund the Portal on the basis of its new AC technology which will help keep up with the future internet of things in my soon to be connected house. Connecting it to my old router was a breeze since I'm quite technically savvy, however, those less so will still find setup quite easy to do with the included directions. My Motorola SURFboard which was given to me from my ISP had become outdated with no updates being received (as far as I could tell) over the five years I have owned it. In addition, while the coverage was good in my room ten feet away, my parents' room didn't get the best speed and occasionally dropped out at 45 feet. Maybe it was due to the three walls plus bathroom mirror, or maybe the hardware was just dated. My ISPs package provides us with 60 down and 8 up. With my Motorola router I was getting about 30-40 down, and 6 up. I was actually planning to confront my ISP about this but then I heard about the Portal. Now my whole house is given consistent coverage and my ISP is meeting its specified speeds, and even going a little above those speeds when the surrounding networks aren't busy. Speaking of sounding networks, I can't begin to tell you how useful the Portal has been with all the neighbors and their networks. On some days after work and school, our connection would suffer since everyone was on the same wireless channel. Switching channels didn't work either because they were all taken up and each channel was often dedicated to multiple independent networks. Oh, and me and my parents don't fume if I decide to start up a game in the middle of their Netflix stream. Their movie isn't stuck loading, and my games don't lag. This new technology like AC wireless and dynamic frequency switching is really something to be embraced. The back-end side on the internet is quite easy to manage as well. Everything is neatly organized and simple to understand and easy to configure. To tie it all off, its even got two USB slots in the back for some network attached storage. Great for saving all the family photos and videos to without having to keep all those images on our own devices storage. Overall, my wireless expectations are now being met thanks to the Portal which is not only effective in what it sets out to do, but also looks quite stylish while doing so.

Solid router with good coverage in congested areas

Full disclosure I was one of the initial Kickstarter backers. The promise of a router that would dynamically switch between DFS channels when available was of great importance to me. I live in a townhouse community so I'm surrounded by tons of wireless networks. The Portal Router allows me to use Wifi in channels with minimal interference. This means better throughout and a better signal. Sounds great right? Well there is a minor quibble that I have. But this isn't an issue with the router itself. Let me explain real quick. Not all wifi devices can operate in the 802.11ac DFS channels. Often this is a cost saving measure by vendors. I have had issues where some of my devices will not work on a select few of the DFS channels. For example my Roku Premiere+, Amazon Echo, and Vizio M series TV will not connect on all the DFS channels the Portal supports. Please remember this is not Portal's fault. In order to help get these devices to work on DFS channels the router does support a compatibility mode. This forces the router not to use some of the DFS channels. Prior to getting the Portal my Speedtests were regularly hovering around 150-160 Mbps down and about 12 up. Using the portal I've seen better results. 200+ down and 12 up on 802.11ac. Overall I'm a very happy Kickstarter backer. at the start the router wasn't very feature rich however the vendor has started adding more advanced features.

I bought this router through kickstarter, mostly because I was having range and connection issues with my old linksys one. Both of them are solved now. I get a consistent signal throughout my apartment (and even a few floors down in the laundry room), and there's no longer any dropped connections due to interference from networks from other apartments. At one point, I had some trouble connecting the app on my phone to the router. I sent an email to Portal's customer support and got a prompt reply -- service was great, and in no time, everything was working. Add to that the clean design, fast speeds, easy setup, auto-updating, and constantly improving features, and you have yourself a winner.

Let me start off by saying that I have owned this router since it was first made available to early Kickstarter backers. Portal has continued to add features that make this product even better as time goes by. With that being said, this router offers exceptional coverage and provides me with speeds that are even faster than what I pay for from my ISP. I also love the 4 ports on the back so I can hardwire my gaming consoles. I switched from an Apple Airport Extreme and have never looked back. I have no hesitations recommending this router to anyone that needs to cover a large area or is surrounded by dozens of access points from neighbors.

I'm using Portal since it's campaign successfully funded on Kickstarter. It has a beautiful design. It is very easy to set up the router using app on your smartphone. Also you can manual configure additional feature via web interface. The manufacturer constantly update firmware and adding new feature. Portal has a great coverage in big houses even through brick/concrete walls. Also the support team is very friendly and will help you if you will have any problems. I'm very happy with Portal and using it instead Apple AirPort Extreme (5th Gen).

I Kickstarted the project when it was first announced. The device was very easy to install and to add to my network as an access point to my current Asus Merlin firmwared router. The speed of point to point communications on the 5GHz bands are very good and it has a good antenna repartition that covers my entire house very well. I would and have recommended it to a few people over the months of my ownership :)

    Excellent Router

This router is a huge improvement over my prior routers. The speed of my internet improved significantly (50-60 mbps most of the time before, now 80-90mbps most of the time) after switching from an Apple Airport Extreme. It was easy to set up and the app is helpful. However, the reason I am dropping a star is because of administrator limitations. A Smart device is required to set up the router (I used an iPhone). However, the device you use to set it up will be the ONLY device with full administrator privileges. I tried to log in and make my new phone the administrator, and it was going to make me reset the entire router and all its settings to do so, which would have required me to reconnect every device in my house. If they fix that issue, it would be a perfect router.

I was one of the Kickstarter backers for Portal. I had pretty great experience overall. The setup for Portal (whether a single one or in mesh mode) was fairly easy and straightforward. If you are looking for a nice, consistent, easy to configure mesh network, Portal works great. If you are a power user that loves tinkering and messing with the network, you may want to look elsewhere as the webui does not have a huge amount of configuration options. They have started they plan on adding more features. The ONLY issue I had was around my Android phones randomly disconnecting. I ended up replacing these with another mesh solution, and made a few changes in how the network is setup. I DO NOT believe the disconnects are the fault of Portal, but are actually an issue with Android phones and how they connect to the mesh networks. The key appears to be moving the mesh units to be further away for more equal coverage of the house. It cuts down on disconnects significantly. The good news about having the issue, was that I got to work with support. In general, their support team was extremely helpful. Some replies took a bit longer than I'd like, but for a smaller company, they did a good job.

The Portal might as well be from another dimension. It's setup through an app that allows everything you need without being too technical, yet it's technically outstanding as it allows the usage of top of the line features without paying a luxury fee. It also has gotten better over time! Possibly the best router for most people!

I'm generally skeptical of router companies, but I now have 200Mbps speeds in my home. I live in LA and have neighbors, and this is the best router I've ever used. Simple setup, easy to manage, and just ridiculous speeds all day and all night.

TL;DR: I can fully recommend this product after Portal's efforts to resolve issues. I backed Portal as part of the original Kickstarter and I have to say that I was originally not impressed. At the very start, everything looked golden and I thought this was going to be the best router ever, but then I started experiencing crashing and inability to keep my settings. I put in a support ticket and spent over two months in contact with the Portal team, sending them logs and experimenting under their direction. I nearly gave up and sold the router, but Portal was finally able to resolve my issues in a firmware update. It's been a long and rocky road, but I'm happy with it now. Thumbs up to Portal support for perseverance and patience. As far as performance goes, this thing covers my three-floor, 2200 sq ft townhome pretty well. Speeds are great and congestion in my somewhat crowded neighborhood is pretty much a non-issue due to the tech in the Portal. The app could still use some work, but it's serviceable and the team is far from done, so I'm not complaining. I knew what I was getting into when I backed the project. I can't speak for their mesh capabilities yet, but I'm very satisfied and I would recommend this to anyone who thinks they can cover all their bases with a single powerful router.

    Best Router for Apartments

I've owned a lot of routers in the past, and while they worked pretty well in houses where there weren't a lot of overlapping networks, speeds dropped quickly or the connections were erratic in an apartment. With the Portal router, I rarely run into video buffering issues or network contention. It's easy to setup and it keeps itself up to date, unlike other routers, where you have to back them up, then download firmware files (if you can find them) and perform manual updates. Even after I bought it, there have been new features added via updates, not just security or bug fixes.

This is a great router, especially for people who don't want to take up networking as a second profession. The configuration is very simple, and can be done from an iOS (iPhone / iPad) or Android device. The feature that got me interested in this router was its ability to monitor the radar spectrum and use it for faster connections if it's not in use. This can alleviate congestion if you are in an area overcrowded with WiFi access points.

I funded this on KickStarter so have had this since day 1. It has worked pretty much flawlessly in that time. More features have been added with free, automatic updates which is great. I was able to do all of the things I wanted to from previous routers, such as forwarding ports and using a VPN, although the settings screens needed some exploring. I wanted to get this for the ability to create a mesh network simply, similar to aero and others, but turns out a single router has been fine in our house. The only feature I thought this had, (but it doesn't and I haven't seen on other routers either,) was to use the mobile companion app to manually approve/deny devices that try to connect to my Portal's WiFi. Making it more secure for me and simpler for guests that don't need a password. I must have misread the description originally of what the app was for.

I had trouble with my Nighthawk router in my apartment building, getting 10mps less than what I was paying for from my ISP. I got the Portal and I starting getting above my advertised speed. Streaming and gaming is no longer an issue and set up was so easy. I bought an extra assuming I would need to link to cover the apartment, but didn't need it so now my next door neighbor is a user too. A+

Bought 2 of these when my wife and I moved into our new home, brick walls and very long distance from bedroom to the living room. They "meshed" perfectly with each other and our wifi signal is perfect throughout the entire house. Probably the best part about it is the ios/android app that makes set up extremely easy.
