I run a small business from home and Quicken H&B allows you to create invoices, quotes and track spending and expenses. You can still track personal as well and keep it separate from your business. It does lack some features that full blown QuickBooks will offer such as inventory and payroll. For a home business you probably don't need those features anyway. The UI is pretty straight forward to get you started but there is a lot of features and will probably take months to master.

Quicken home and business has been my financial management selection since 2003. Prior to that I used quicken premium but found I need more control of personal investments, business expenses and expenditures of discretionary income, home and business was the answer than and continues to cover the bases today. It is a reliable product. For online and billing invoices the full quicken product is better and my wife Bill's using that for her business. Once setup is complete it is a easy one click to get updates and once Q H&B is trained there are very few transactions that need to be corrected for type of expense or fund source. I love this software!

I have been a user of Quicken since it was introduced and continue to rely on it for tracking finances across personal banking, investments and home business. It's a familiar and functional user interface. Quicken continues to do a good job managing 40+ accounts to download and reconcile. I absolutely resent being forced to change to a subscription-based annual service as I was perfectly happy to upgrade every several years. That's the primary reason for not providing 5 stars.

First beware to potential buyers of this product. Once purchased and installed you will be required to purchase a version of Quicken each year. Previously you could wait and choose a year to purchase when you thought there was enough new advantages to justify the expense. The software is just as good as it's always been, you just have to fork over money each year now to keep it.

Does the job - but there are some trade-offs

I've been using Quicken for nearly 30 years and I've developed a genuine love/hate relationship. As far as keeping me on top of all of my financial assets, Quicken does a very good job. At the same time though, there are some things about it that drive me crazy... Pros * It allows tracking of transactions and account values on all of my financial assets in one central location. That includes bank accounts, brokerage and retirement asset accounts, capital assets (home, vehicles, etc.), and business accounts and assets. Taken together, it can display net worth on a continuously updating basis. * If you have the will and the patience to do the data entry on each financial transaction, it can provide a very detailed picture of budgets and give a good basis for doing budget projections. * It provides a basic set of investment management and analysis tools. * Supports setting and tracking budgets. * Detailed reporting of transaction data can pay off in unexpected ways. When I experienced a home burglary several years ago, I was able to create detailed lists of lost item purchase costs, merchant names and purchase dates for submission with my insurance claim. * Calendar function can give a good forward-looking view of upcoming financial activity. This is very useful in making sure account balances are always sufficient to cover bills payable on future dates. * It can download transactions from your financial institutions - sometimes. (See Cons below). Know that if you want to categorize items within a transaction (like a purchase at Target/Walmart that includes clothing AND groceries), you'll still have to edit the transactions you download. Cons * Quicken is now a subscription based product. If you do not resubscribe every year, you lose access to all online-based services like account transaction downloads, stock value updates and stock analysis material. (You do NOT lose any of the data you've already entered though.) * You can't "downgrade" without losing data. My wife was a sole-proprietor contractor several years ago and all of the business records were kept in Quicken. For that, we needed the "Home and Business" version of the product. Even though she has not done any more contract work in the years since, the possibility of an audit means we still need to pay the premium price for that "Home and Business" product to maintain access to those prior years business data despite the fact we no longer actively use those functions. * While there are many canned reporting functions (all of which can be tweaked - to a degree), there are some fairly basic reports of account/asset value over time I have never been able to produce. For some reporting, I do a mass data export to a spreadsheet and to the reporting/charting from there. * Transaction downloads from financial institutions can be hit and miss. I can get bank transactions OK, but Quicken does not support downloads from the institution that handles my brokerage activity. * Data entry can be quirky and sometimes frustrating. Cut, copy and paste uses the outmoded "Shift+Del", "Ctrl+Ins", & "Shift+Ins" keys. When filling forms, sometimes you can advance to the next field using "Enter" and sometimes that method give you an error. I do a LOT of data entry in Quicken and these drive me nuts. * For many years, there have been no significant updates or enhancements to the core accounting and tracking functions I use. Yet every year now, I'm now obliged to effectively buy the product all over again. Yes, there have been constant changes. But those changes are all adding bells and whistles that are not useful to me or adding extensions to auxiliary mobile platforms that I will never use. Simply put, I'm pretty much stuck with this product for all the good and bad. I regularly run reports spanning activity over months and over decades, and I'd be hard pressed to do this any other way without writing my own application from scratch - not that that is likely to happen. It is so tightly integrated into my financial workflow that, without it, my whole accounting and investment management system would collapse without it. That level of reliance along with the changes in the Quicken business model to a subscription-based service has left me with more negative feelings about both the company and the product. For those reasons, I'd say to anyone not already using the product to consider alternatives. It is a full-featured product and it can be good at what it does. Just know that you may be looking at a long-term (lifetime?) commitment if this is how you decide to go. Caveat emptor.

A good financial tool. Limitations exist as there are no workarounds. Limited financial institution access. That means not everything can be downloaded. Many require manual entries. Can be very painful for retirement accounts.

I use it to keep track of my portfolio. I use different brokerage firms and this allows me to see the whole picture at once. The brokerage firms allow you to import the data from other firms into their site, but I prefer not to do so and keep private. The only issue I have is it does not track bonds very well. Overall, the software is pretty much intuitive and kept up to date.

Have used Quicken for many years so changing to another program is not in my comfort zone. Experienced some difficulty with installation and setup (merging files) but once completed, the program works fine.

I use this mainly for some rentals and the program is exactly what I need. The program does much more than I need, but the power may be useful in the future. Imputing data is intuitve and the tax reports make tax time a breeze.

I was forced to upgrade by Quicken informing me that my current Quicken would lose support on 4/30. I've installed the new version and don't see any features worth the money. In addition, I'm informed that I only have an annual subscription, not 3 years of use as before and to add insult to injury, the subscription starts from 2/22, my installation date, not 5/1, when I was required to upgrade.
