I was excited for this product and the wi-fi back up camera but after the installation, it quickly became apparent of all its shortcomings. The GPS takes way too long to get reception and it's not like a live in a secluded area. That's just one of the issues that might be overlooked if it was cheaper but for the price it is not acceptable. I returned it and will stick my cell phone.

This thing is awesome! I had priced out similar "in-dash" products and for pretty much the same thing I saved a TON of money. The mounting system however made it difficult to see, So with a little "mcguyvering" I mounted it in a place that did not obstruct my view.

First things first...As a member of the Tech Insider Network Best Buy sent me one of these for free in exchange for an honest review. This isn't normally something on which I'd spend my hard-earned money. After using it for a couple weeks...I might. The Overdryve is a hybrid GPS, dashcam, collision warning, music streaming, bluetooth speaker phone, and auto diagnostic monitoring device. There are also a few other functions I wasn't able to test - tire pressure monitoring system as well as a backup camera. It's all package in an elegant package running Android OS. After opening, you run through some basic setup. It's beneficial to run through this in your car vs sitting on the couch. The Overdryve will also make the recommendation to perform the setup in your car. After running through the basic setup, I was ready to get started. GPS. This is a very nice interface. Sadly, I received the Overdryve after a few key road trips so I used it to get me to work. If you have internet connectivity, it will warn you of traffic issues and make recommendations to faster routes. I don't have the option to hotspot my phone and wasn't able to test this on the road. The annoying part is the extremely robotic voice. It made me long for the pleasant English woman from my parents circa 2000 Garmin. The same voiceover person they used was also the voice for the collision warning system. There it wasn't quite as bothersome. Danger, Will Robinson! Hooking the Overdryve to my car stereo was quite simple. The simplest connection is using the RF (radio frequency) transmitter embedded in the mount (more on the mount later). You configure the Overdryve to use whatever radio station you want. Best practice would be to see what stations in your area get the worst signal. Regardless, it connected without any wires outside of power to the mount. Streaming music hosted on Amazon, from my iPhone to the Overdrive via Bluetooth and then over my car stereo using the RF transmitter...and this is easier than a CD? Anyway. It worked (I'm reminded of a Big Band Theory episode where they were using the "internet of things" to turn on/off a light). I did get some weird noise/artifacts, but that could be RF noise as there are tons of radio stations in the Chicago market. I tried different stations, but it didn't seem to make much of a difference (trying to pay attention to driving and not dorking with electronics. There is also the option to connect the Overdryve with a 3.5mm headphone jack which does minimize the noise if your car is equipped. Collision Warning system - this was fun. Because I'm a guy, I didn't read the instructions. I still haven't. When you first start up the collision warning, it runs through a calibration of sorts. Well, I was ready to test...The warnings won't go off while it's calibrating. I was still testing. I couldn't get much closer to the cars in front of me without being accused of some sort of NASCAR bump drafting. After the calibration completed (cough) it provided ample'ish warning. I wouldn't rely on this or any other system to properly protect you from a crash. Get your eyes on the road! What else? The dash cam does what you'd think. The pictures and video are of decent quality. Don't anticipate winning an Academy Award for cinematography, but it could certainly win $10,000 on America's Funniest Videos. There is adequate storage (32GB) to keep several recordings. The Overdryve also comes with a diagnostic app for monitoring your car's performance. This is a Pandora's box of information. I've been using different monitoring programs for years. The Overdryve comes with a product called DashCommand, which is a really nice app that also works on iOS and Android as well. It does require the purchase of an adapter to go from OBD2 (goofy oblong plug under the dash of 1996+ autos) to wifi or bluetooth. I used an ELM327 device that can be found on Amazon (can I say that on a Best Buy review?) for around $20-30. I used the same one that I use with my iPhone. I just had to connect the Overdryve to the ELM327 wifi connection and then DashCommand connected and was able to provide real time data on my car's diagnostic system. I repeat...this CAN be overwhelming. The Overdryve also relays text messages from your phone to the screen. Very convenient. What I didn't like. The robo-voice for the navigation system. It's just so...2000. The power plug for the smart mount is HUGE. Donald Trump would be proud of how HUGE this plug is. It probably isn't much different from other cigarette lighter adapters, but if your wanting a connected car there needs to be better integration. Maybe an easy way to hardwire to a 12V source? The million dollar question...would I recommend this to a friend? Ugh. I don't know. I still see a lot of standalone GPS devices in cars, where I prefer to use my phone. If you're one who likes a standalone nav system, this isn't all bad. It offers so much more. If you're spending the money on a GPS, why not add some additional functionality?

    Complex Live Traffic Updates

I really tried to like this one. But the inability to regularly get live traffic was a killer. The only way I could get them was to synch to my phone via wifi--Each time I powered up, I had to go through the process of setting my phone as a wifi hot spot. I found myself using Google Maps instead. I called Rand McNally with no luck. After a week, I returned it.

    Not Well Designed

I wanted this to work badly. I thought it the perfect solution for a dual dash cam with good GPS that was not cell phone based. The problem is that it has a huge design flaw. The camera faces exactly opposite to the screen. Thus, if you place it in the center of the dashboard and angle it toward the driver, it does not record straightforward. Additionally, the software behaves like a cheap Android tablet. Oh, and it will not play nice with my Automatic Pro. For the 'car monitoring feature', it wants you to buy an extra device that does not exist and pay a $9.99 monthly fee to do what Automatic Pro does better with no monthly fee.

    A Good GPS Decent Tablet

If you are looking for a Stand Alone GPS unit. This does the job well. Mounts nice in the car and with offline maps this a good unit. The addition of a DashCAM is helpful too allowing for the device to do two important jobs. You may ask why a GPS unit when most people have a phone. This is nice for the size and placement make it easier to read, even in full sunlight the screen was visible. Also being offline, you don't need to download maps ahead of time or run off data. Additionally as an android tablet it is fairly fast. While it doesn't have the google play store, it does have the amazon one which allowed me to load Amazon Video and Goat Simulator to test the speed. Tablet works well. Also can be used as an offline media player, handy to keep the backseat quiet on longer drives. The Bluetooth connectivity for the phone to listen to audio from another device works fairly well, even if I did have the occasion to restart the tablet when it borked between my phone and the device. No a huge deal. Just mildly annoying. Overall it isn't a bad tablet. Packaged well and will give you directions, but I noticed for voice search on the GPS and live data it needs a wifi connection. So if you want live traffic, or voice search in a destination for the GPS you'll need a phone or a car with a WiFi hotspot. I didn't test it as a microphone for hands free calls, but considering it is built well I assume it work well. The addition of the screen protector was additionally nice too. It attaches via magnets to its smart car mount, and those are strong magnets. Driving in the underbelly of pothole central (New Jersey) with my car bouncing around it never waivered but easily comes off when I grab it to take it inside or secure in my trunk. Overall it is a nice unit and I'm happy with it generally. I like the tablet ability, as when you travel it means you can take it into the hotel room and watch video's on it saving needing to carry potentially an additional device. Give it try I think if you want a stand alone unit this might be the one for you.

I took a while to review this Rand McNally Overdryve system so I could check it with various vehicles and phones. I love the overall concept of this system, and if you have an older (2013 or earlier) vehicles, regardless of make, this is an excellent upgrade. Much better than just a plain old GPS. It integrates well with all the cellphones I tried, and can use your FM Radio for speakerphone/audio. It uses your cellphone's data to update/search among other things. It really brings all the tech bells and whistles to older and/or basic vehicles that don't have navigation and data/camera systems. It has a built-in driving camera and integrates well with it's dash or window holder, which also doubles as it's power connector and output base. My only shortcomings are that the maps are 2D (but navigation is awesome, but this is Rand McNally so it better be) and that to gain some of the "neat" options they have to be purchased as add-ons. These add-ons include back-up camera, tire pressure sensors, vehicle data sensors and more. These items are costly add-ons that make the system better but add to the cost. Overall I would say this is an awesome "better than GPS" data system for basic or older vehicles. If you have a newer tricked out tech vehicle this won't do much for you. Happy shopping!
