I would call this film a modern take on the Frankenstein films. Re-Animating the dead with less than successful results, namely the resurrection of corpses that come back with very evil intentions. I don't want to give up too much of the storyline but I will say this film, tho sharing the same premise as some older horror film classics it is quite unique in its own way. It's almost borderline a zombie film where re-animation comes at a price as re-animated subjects attempt to consume living humans without the contamination factor that most zombie films present by transfer of fluids. I must warn all that this film is quite graphic by nature, it not only has loads of gore, blood, dismemberment's and viscous attacks by the re-animated but also has graphic nudity intended for adults. The storyline is engineered intelligently with acting by competent actors raising the bar compared to similar films of the same genre it is quite compelling & will entertain those fans of horror who do not mind an over-the-top gory experience. Video - Codec: VC-1 (29.97 Mbps) I liked what I saw visually here with a beautiful render of a film that has never really been eye popping in past releases. Granted the director used soft focus but one will see improved facial features revealing detail while showing no signs of DNR smearing. The only thing that disappointed me was Image Entertainments choice in ratio's using Aspect ratio 1.78:1 instead of the original aspect ratio of 1.85:1 cropping is never a good thing even if it appears 16:9 I would have rather had black bars with all digital information intact. Colors are beautiful, reds, greens & blacks are deep and gorgeous. Audio - DTS-HD MA 5.1 sounded decent but not immersive since its original mono soundtrack can only go so far in the world of HD sound. Even so this HD sound track is healthy you will especially notice the beautiful Richard Band music score in all its Psychotic greatness! Sups - A good supply of supplements have been included on this 50 GB Blu-Ray disc as follows: 1. "Re-Animator Resurrectus" (68:38): This documentary is all you could ask for from a Re-Animator making-of. All of the key participants are interviewed, and perhaps because the film was independently produced, they are sometimes surprisingly frank about the challenges of the production. 2. Interview with Stuart Gordon and Brian Yuzna (48:47): An informal and fond conversation between the director and producer of Re-Animator. 3. Interview with Writer Dennis Paoli (10:40): The film's scribe speaks intelligently about Lovecraft and the origins of the movie. 4. Interview with Composer Richard Band (14:42): The first of two pieces with Band, this one focuses more on the film's production and post-production. 5. Music Discussion with Composer Richard Band (16:28): This second piece with Band covers the film's music itself, dissecting some key cues in dramatic and musical terms. 6. Interview with Fangoria Editor Tony Timpone (4:34): Timpone, an early advocate of Re-Animator, recalls seeing it in 1985 and writing about it in Fangoria. 7. Deleted and Extended Scenes (26:06): Some interesting stuff here, including some footage that would indicate the story had once gone in a very different direction. 8. Trailers and TV Spots Again you will not want to sit down with your family and watch this film it is very gross with explicit female nudity. But for the hardcore Adult Horror fan that has never had the pleasure, they will surely watch this slick Lovecraft horror gem, again & again! - Highly Recommended.

A classic gross fun gore filled (slightly campy) old school horror movie updated in higher definition in this awesome special edition!! Takes me back to the first time I saw on vhs as a kid. If you have not seen this & love 70/80/90’s obscure horror or shock horror this one may thrill your quite well!! Thank goodness for Arrow. Now I can bury those lackluster previous releases. This is the one to grab. The movie... A CLASSIC! Obviously, that's why I continue to buy it. I hope Best Buy stocks all the Arrow USA releases and starts importing the region B discs for their online store. Some of us have all-region players! Anyway, highly recommended.

Can gore be funny, or better yet, horror-gore be funny? I know full and well that horror can contain plenty of humor (Plenty of Sam Raimi's films, The Nightmare on Elm Street films got progressively funnier over each passing film) but something this gory and fairly horrific? If you have seen Re-Animator, the answer is a resounding yes. Starting in Switzerland, Herbert West is a quite brilliant, but strange medical student, who has invented a reagent to bring the dead back to life. He brings his mentor, Dr. Hans Gruber (Not canon with Die Hard, I promise you), back to life, but he is accused of murder. West transfers to Miskatonic University in the US, to further his studies in the medicinal field. He rents a room from fellow med student Dan Cain, who is in love with the dean's daughter Megan, and converts the basement into his laboratory, continuing his experiments on his reagent. Dan stumbles onto West's experiments, with his deceased cat Rufus reanimated to prove to Dan his serum works. Telling Dr. Halsey, the dean, about the reagent, they are barred from the school and deemed crazy. To redeem their careers, they break into the morgue, re-animate a corpse, but the corpse turns into a zombie, with Dr. Halsey stumbling onto the project, when things start to spiral out of control for all involved. If you look at it as just a straight up horror film, or a comedy, or a gorefest, it all works on all fronts. Better yet, the film works as a cohesive whole, with plenty of horror, tons of laughs and plenty of blood and guts filled scenes to satisfy all tastes. The cast is generally pretty good, with Jeffrey Combs terrific as Herbert West. The direction from first-time director Stuart Gordon is extremely solid and his execution of the film is top notch. The film is paced extremely well (Not even a full 90 minutes) and the practical makeup, while fairly cheesy at times, still has plenty of creativity. Moving to the BluRay, the PQ of the film is very solid, especially coming from an aged source (About 25 years when the BluRay was pressed, 31 years old now), with some nice details in the skin and face, excellent black levels, but the film does have an overall soft look. I refer to the cinematography and director's intent on the softness issue, but it doesn't get smeary and looks quite good. A 4K remaster (A re-animation perhaps?) would do wonders though. AQ, a 5.1 DTS-HD remix from the original mono elements, is pretty decent, but really does nothing to enhance the sound field, with the score being the only exception. Moving onto the extras, there is plenty here for fans to dig through (Most of it carried over from various DVD releases over the years) starting with 2 commentaries (Stuart Gordon going solo on track #1, the main cast and producer Brain Yuzna on track #2), a full-length making-of documentary with interviews with cast and crew members, interviews with the director, producer, writer, composer, and Fangoria editor, 17 deleted and alternate scenes,the trailer and multiple TV spots, offer hours and hours of fun to dig through. Missing from the DVD's are as follows: an isolated score track, multiple still image galleries and DVD-ROM extras that included the screenplay and text from H.P. Lovecraft's Re-Animator series. This is a must have BluRay (or DVD if you still use them) with a fun film, good specs and tons of extras to pour through, and for $5.99, its a no brainer!

One of my favorites. If your into collecting SciFi/Horror films like me. Then this is a must have for your collection. It's a great film.

Most of the cheap or not so cheaply made horror films these days are nothing more than a tedious exercise in how to bump off as many teenagers in as many different ways as one can imagine in ninety minutes or less. One need only watch recent films such as Wrong Turn or the remake of Texas Chainsaw Massacre to realize how far the horror genre has fallen. Once John Carpenter made the first Halloween film, we have been subject to an endless series of copy cat films whose only purpose seems to be finding an imaginative way to slice and dice the local teenage population. All of the Freddies, Jasons, and Michael Myers films combined don't come close to having an ounce of the entertainment and imagination of Producer Brian Yuzna and Director and Writer Stuart Gordon's Re-animator

The millennials may think that this film will only seem good to those who saw it in the 80s and that people who have never seen it shouldn't. Well I really have to disagree, a few months ago I bought this Blu Ray for 5 bucks and it was one of the best 5 bucks I ever spent. This film is great. If you actually like real horror films then you should like this film. So if you're a fan of horror and haven't seen this film yet you should go out and buy it right now. The BLU RAY is amazing by the way and pretty cheap.

Every once in awhile a horror movie comes out and has a gimmick. The advertising for this film claimed it was not for the faint of heart. This type of "DARE YOU" advertising goes back to William Castel's films. The big difference here is this film lived up to its hype. There have been more shocking films since Re Animator but it really pushed the limits at its time in the way of gore and plain old shock value. Any horror fan will tell you this film is easily a top ten for any collection.

I own a DVD copy signed by both Jeff Combs and Bruce Abbott. If one could "wear out" a dvd then I have done that. Now I own the Blu-ray and it is AWESOME. Re-animator is the story of two medical school students and roommates. One is just trying to figure out his life while the other is perfecting his formula to bring people back from the dead. So far there have been success, but only if you find murderous "Pet Cemetery" re-animations to be a "success:.

Re-Animator is a unique movie. It's a gory horror film, but it's also so hilarious I truly feel like you could consider it a comedy. Jeffery Combs plays Herbert West, a sort of evil version of Sheldon Cooper who has discovered to a formula to reanimate dead corpses. From there, it becomes twisted wicked fun. With its charmingly low budget B-movie atmosphere, impressive special effects and pitch black sense of humor, Re-Animator is a perfectly fun horror film for gore hounds, cult film lovers and fans of the delightfully twisted alike.

The answer to my summary question is: YES! And he's injecting dead pets and people with the glowing juice from a dozen glow sticks to create this 1 of a kind zombie movie. I saw this movie when I was 12 at our local grindhouse theatre and it left an impression on me. Best buy had this gem hidden on the $5 rack. $5 FOR A CLASSIC ON BLU RAY?!? Uh, cashier, can you ring me up please?

Not for the squeamish, Stuart Gordon's Re-Animator is an absolute horror classic, and it looks GREAT on this blu-ray. I recently upgraded to the Arrow release, but this version still has tons of awesome special features making it a must-have for fans. Big thumbs up!

I've had this on dvd for years, and appreciated the early effort to both bring this story to the screen as well as to combine hour with humor, a staple now that was undefined back when this was made. Its a real treat, both for entertainment as well as for film history.

One the best horror classics to come out the 80's when there was tons slasher movies coing out was fresh to one the best H.P. lovecraft adaptaions to screen with all the gore & humor

Not only is Re-Animator a classic in its own right, but the Arrow release is a must have for fans.

H.P. Lovecraft, Stuart Gordon, and the fans deserve better. This Blu's picture does not pop, and the sound is just slightly better than the DVD. Problem being, a persistent softness. Is it better than the last DVD release? Only slightly. Is it worth the $5.99? Maybe. Not worth upgrading? That's up to you.

A fun horror movie that answers the age old question since biblical times, "If you had the power to re-animate people and bring them back to life, how would you use that ability?" A fun lighthearted romp that always gives me the munchies.

Hands down one of my favorite horror movies. Tons of funny moments tons of gore. If you haven't seen this movie your missing out. Go to film every halloween season check out the sequels as well on dvd.

This was a blind buy for me, I'm a huge 80's horror fan and I absolutely loved Re-Animator, this is the type of horror films I grew up watching and that I still appreciate today, highly recommended to any 80's horror movie fan.

This is a really fun Horror movie. You can almost feel the actors smiling under their performances. Everything about this screams low budget but they do very well with what money they were given. Great extras as well.
