I had seen the movie before and to re-watch it once more gave me more of the storyline to follow. It was heartwarming to see all the way through

An excellent film with plenty of robot fighting action and great chemistry between Hugh Jackman and Dakota Goyo. A movie that can be enjoyed multiple times. The bonus features are excellent as well. A word of caution: There is some bad language, but not an extraordinary amount.

Real steel is not your average story. I enjoy movies that aren’t predictable and this one fit the bill. In the end it’s a heartwarming , feel good story about a couple of underdogs ; not just the robot but Hugh Jacman’s character as well. It’s definitely worth the time spent watching it and the cost of the disc.

    Iron Man meets The Fighter

    Posted .

In a world of cage matches and underground brawling, boxing seems sadly tame by comparison. And with ever-increasing technological advances, robot death-matches may be a coming attraction destined for a venue near you. Though probably not in the not-too-distant future depicted in this Hugh Jackman science-fiction movie. It’s 2020 and Charlie Kenton (Jackman) is a boxer whose days in the ring are long-behind him thanks to the emergence of robot boxing. He now controls other fighters (robots) from the sidelines. Unfortunately, he’s had a long run of bad luck and is in serious debt. He’s then hit with the news that the son he never sees was recently orphaned when his mother, and Charlie’s former girlfriend, died. At the custody hearing he sees Max (played by Dakota Goyo), Max’s wealthy Aunt Debra (played by Hope Davis) and her husband Marvin (played by James Rebhorn). Marvin (Rebhorn) tells Charlie that while they want custody and know that he doesn’t, they have plans for the summer and they are willing to pay a six-figure sum if Charlie will care for Max until they return. And at that time he’ll relinquish all claims to Max. Soon Max and Charlie find a robot to replace the one lost in Charlie’s most recent bout and embark on the process of training it and repaying Charlie’s debts. I wasn’t expecting much from this film given the premise and the fact that some of Jackman’s previous films (the X-MEN series and Wolverine follow-up) left me disappointed. I was surprised and very pleased to see this film outshine those in execution and conclusion. Jackman’s role isn’t all that different from ones past but the tone and supporting characters make for an extremely enjoyable two hours and seven minutes.

I like the idea of battling robots, coupled with the story of a father and son reconciling their relationship during their journey. Also a love a boy finds for a robot he battled with.

Hugh Jackman gives an excellent performance and costar Dakota Goyo shines as well. The giant robots looked realistic, excellent cinematography and art direction. The plot kid wants to connect with absentee father, father self absorbed but eventually realizes his mistakes had been done before, but not like this! Giant boxing robots and father-son relationship issues makes this movie worth watching again and again. A must to a personal movie collection.

This movie is a Rocky knock off. If you liked Rocky then you will love this, just that this movie is with robots. I have seen this movie at least a dozen times and still don't tire of it. I have seen it with my kids, which is always a plus. The acting is solid, though it won't winn an academy award, and the plot, though predictable, is still a good one. It is always exciting to see the underdog prevail against the establisment and favorite.

This movie has a fun underdog feel to it. As advertised, it's Rocky with robots. The movie is a bit violent for kids younger than 13 years of age. I enjoyed the movie and the director's commentary.

I finally got this on Blu-Ray after it dropped in price. I like boxing movies in general and this is basically Rocky with robots. Both of my sons like this AND my daughter as well so it's a winner for us!

In 2020, human boxers are replaced by robots. Charlie Kenton (Hugh Jackman), a former boxer, finds he has to be a dad, become responsible and find his decency and rediscover he is a great boxer.... truly enjoyed this movie... transformers blended with robotics with human controllers.

My son had heard about this movie from some of his classmates. He wanted to see it so bad, so I called the video store to see if they had it... they didn't. We called around to multiple places with no luck. I had my son Google it, and we could only find it sold by a few stores, or the option to stream it. After researching it, Best Buy had the best price for it. The look on his face when he opened it was priceless.
