4 of 5 stars for the Vietnam war movie Rescue Dawn. This is the story of an American pilot shot down over Laos early in the war before it was common knowledge that the USA was bombing in Laos. This is a tough, gritty, hard movie. Not alot of fun; but, a solid story (based on the life of German-born Dieter Dengler). The story is heavy but true, the action gut-wrenching. The strength and determination of Dengler was impressive. The movie was well created with realistic settings (mostly filmed in Thailand). Yes, I do recommend this movie, but, make sure you are ready for a 2+ hour heavy war movie. BTW, shout-out to actor Christian Bale who played Dengler; no matter what, that must have been a tough movie to make and the personal stuff he went thru to make it...well, wow!

This is one of the best Vietnam movies I have ever seen. The acting is phenomenal, by all 3 American POW's. I especially enjoyed Jeremy Davies' portrayal of Eugene. However, this movie is not very accurate to the truth - see the extras on the DVD and search the Internet - wikipedia. If you are wanting to watch this movie sheerly for dramatic effect and entertainment, then you should rent something like Platoon instead. You will likely be bored by the directing style of Werner Herzog. You have to be a film-buff to really appreciate this movie I think. There are several beautiful, sweeping shots of the Vietnam countryside. This movie is best watched on a large 42"+ screen, in surround sound, to get the full effect.

christain bale at his best. steve zahn shoulve got nominated for best supporting actor. everyone else is superb. there is no story unless the story is survivng, then they did a good job at that. steve zahn becomes such a likeable character in this very tragic and horrific procces. bale is great, too, but we all expected that. the jungle cinematography is perfectly done. but this movie shoulve been rated r. its so graphic and disturbing and sad in some parts. bale delivers a realistic and scared but braveperformance. its smart when he ditches his gear after the plane crash, but not when him and zahn ditch the guns in the jungle. but overall, this was a near perfect movie.

This film is a small masterpiece from Herzog; it is an outstanding piece of cinema because it tackles a different side of war. This film is about survival and it does not hold back on showing us the things that prisoners are subjected too, if anything it tones it down.
Bale does a great job as the lead character and is supported by a great cast, he humanizes his character and delivers a raw performance which is deserving of an Oscar nod.

Rescue Dawn has a lot of realism in it. There is great acting down by bale zahn and really the whole cast (forgot what the name of the actor playing Eugene was). The real problem with this movie is it is very slow moving. For a 2 hour movie it really has a lot of slow parts. The thing is though, although it was slow it didn't really drag on to much. It doesn't feel like 2 hours basically. I would recommend this to someone who really likes war movies, as long as you are not really looking for blood and guts or action. This is not an action packed movie at all.

I think that this movie simply didn't have a story. It was just a lot of rambling scenes that didn't quite come together. It has to be the dumbest movie I have ever watched. If you are thinking of wasting your money on it, let me know and I will sell you mine for cheap!!!!!!!!!
