This is an anime classic. Beautifully animated, and a story that tears up the heart of even the most resistant viewer. The movie is really great. The DVD is also really great. Two languages and a great sub script highlight what could have been completely barebones. Discotek had a classic on its hands, but knowing the runtime was only about 50 minutes created some appealing features. The old dub is a neat listen, with the lyrics to the bizarrely beautiful songs redubbed as close as possible (which makes it odder). The transfer isn't exceptional, but for its age and probably film storage about as good as you could hope. It's better than never getting it at all. Rounding out the features is a fun commentary track by noted writer and anime critic Mike Toole (of Anime News Network fame), delving into the film's history and thematic elements. This was an easy buy for me thanks to Best Buy's generous price matching. If you're on the fence, this is highly recommended as I doubt we'll see a blu-ray release.
