I bought this robot for my son. And it was a defect. The battery wouldn’t charge the robot keep dying. This was a bad experience for a first time buyer. I had to return it.

A peek into Transformers toys of the future?

As someone who was a kid in the '90s, I've seen my fair share of Transformers toys at this point — my brothers growing up were avid fans, and we had plenty of the cheaper toys that could transform from robot to car and vice versa. I expected this Robosen to be more among those lines and was pretty (pleasantly!) stunned at how little like a toy this little robot is. In fact, it really isn't little at all.
Those familiar with collecting figures may well know that there is a line between a toy and a collectible figure. This figure falls squarely into the "premium figure" range, standing quite tall. The specs say it measures sixteen inches but it does seem somehow larger than that! It would, theoretically, look amazing on a display shelf (more on that later) but in my opinion, although the visuals of this figure are impressive, the real magic is in its auto-transforming feature. That it responds to voice commands feels like something any child would find truly magical, and watching it transform feels like something out of a movie. It connects with a smartphone app that can be used as a sort of remote control for the robot, and it can even have Optimus do certain action sequences (pretty awesome, and you can make your own)! I'll admit that despite being a grown adult, all of this did wow me. Watching it transform in person does look more impressive than it did in the trailer.
That being said, there are a few drawbacks. The one that will probably put off the most collectors is that it can't be displayed in robot form as it does go limp when it's not turned on. Luckily, I imagine this won't be a "display shelf" purchase anyways, and moreso would be something that you would be actively showing off to friends or guests or what have you. There do seem to be third-party, unofficial stands for sale online for display purposes if you really want to display it in robot mode (it can be displayed in truck mode without a stand), giving you some flexibility. Still, it would have been nice for Robosen to have an official stand available given most people would probably prefer to have Optimus not ragdoll once power is shut off. The other drawback is firmware updates, which for some inane reason cannot be done over Bluetooth like firmware updates for, say, my smart home devices. Fortunately, I don't think you'd need to anytime soon, barring something going quite wrong, but I'd seen that tidbit mentioned a while ago and had assumed that the process had been made more "official". You really have to dig around to find any information on it: my Googling took me to a Transformers forum with a Google Drive link. Hardly the premium experience I'd expect. The app also seems a little less polished visually than I might have wanted, even though it is functional.
It might seem obvious, but this figure is not for children (duh). It doesn't seem terribly fragile but a child could easily break it on accident. Still, it would be fun to show off to any children you might have, or nieces/nephews/etc. The (adult) friends I showed it to loved it; it truly is a hit with all ages! But do bear in mind that this is not made for children and shouldn't be bought for a young child.
This figure is a far cry from the toys I remember from childhood and would be an excellent purchase for any enthusiast or collector willing to put up with the two downsides I mentioned (and frankly, the second downside isn't something you'll be running into issues within the near future). It's novel and I do hope this type of toy is improved upon going forward. With robotics becoming more accessible and mainstream, I can only imagine what this figure would become in 2030. As it stands, today in 2023 this is still an impressive collector's item.

More than meets the eye....

Let me preface this review by saying I am a BBY employee. I (along with my 2 kids who are 8 & 10) were blown away by the quality and fluidity of all the movements and transformations. It definitely exceeded my expectations. I have yet to create any customized movements as the pre-loaded content/actions are highly entertaining. My only challenge I experienced was having the ability to leverage voice control AND the app simultaneously - this can't be done today as you have to choose one or the other. I would recommend this product to everyone, whether you are a Transformers fan or not. This robot (and collectors item) is worth it!

Transform and Roll Out!!

This is quite possibly the best transformer ever made. Right out of the box you know you’re holding a quality item. It’s well constructed, well painted & and absolutely beautiful display piece. I love the fact that it comes with his signature weapon and his orange axe that is featured in the first season battle with Megatron.
Set up is very straightforward and you do have to charge it and the initial charge took me about two hours after that is when the real fun begins.
Optimus is fully programmable and fully possablr. If you can think it you can pose it. The best part is is it comes with the ability to be programmed into four poses so when he transforms you can choose what form. My personal favorite is being able to have them transform and then he takes a knee like he’s fighting and then you can put his gun in his hand and it’s just amazing to look at.
There’s so many different voice commands that it feels like Peter Cullen is actually inside the robot and the internal speaker is excellent…provides exceptional clarity to Optimus’ speech.
The app gives you fully customizable/control over Optimus. There’s unlimited things you can do when setting up and playing with this toy, it’s like I’m back in 1984 playing with my original!! I only wish that it came with his trailer because that would truly complete the look but this is a fantastic toy for a discerning collector and a centerpiece of anybody’s collection.

Bad Bluetooth

This thing is junk. It was cool the day we took it out of the box, but now we cant use it and support is non existent. Please do not loose or change the first device you connect to it with Bluetooth, you will never be able to connect another device. If you install the app on another device you will never be able to connect to the Optimus. Support was useless. I wish I never bought it.
