Rock Band 4 is more of what you love (or don't love?) from Rock Band 1-3. Same familiar rhythm game interface with some nice improvements, namely the freestyle solos. Play the Freestyle Solo tutorial. It's a lot of fun. Unfortunately, one of my favorite aspects of the game has been severely cut back: Custom Character Creation. The options available for customizing the look of your band members have been greatly reduced. The biggest offender: body customization. Previously, you could adjust height, weight, and athletic build. All of these are gone. Now all band members are identical gaunt skeletons. No longer can you have a big, beefy rocker. Everyone is an emaciated hipster, and there's nothing you can do to change this. Big disappointment in this department. The Harmonix development team did a good job of making sure that past-gen instruments would work with Rock Band 4, and they do. However, guitar controllers from PS3 Guitar Hero games cannot activate Overdrive (Star Power) by tilting. I have to press the bridge button with my palm instead. Still usable, but not nearly as fun as rocking out to rock out. =)

Mechanically Solid but Otherwise Seriously Flawed

First of all, Rock Band 4's gameplay mechanics are as solid as ever. There is no longer support for RB3's keyboard or Pro Guitar, but luckily the fundamentals of the core band gameplay are still excellent. The guitar included in the band box is probably one of the higher quality stock guitars yet. For fans of the series, Rock Band 4 may well be essential. Unfortunately, the game has serious flaws that prevent it from reaching the high standard set by the rest of the franchise. Along with a lack of previously supported features that many consider key to the experience (no online play, no practice mode, no keys or Pro Guitar, etc.), there are several other major issues that may or may not ever be addressed by Harmonix, who seem to have gotten much worse in communicating with their audience (massive lag on the microphone, lots of dropped notes on the drums, a downgraded user interface, etc.). Also note that Madcatz had a lot of problems packaging these band boxes early on, to the point that some people reported receiving instruments for the wrong console, and others (including myself) received band boxes without a game included (I contacted MadCatz support, who took a few days to get back to me, and then sent me the game). Add in minor quibbles like poor character customization options, a higher price point, and one of the lowest quality song lists yet, and it seems that Rock Band 4 is easily the worst entry in the typically high-quality series. For old fans looking for an updated look and new fans merely looking for an introduction to Rock Band's solid core gameplay, Rock Band 4 may be worth it (although I would hold off); for everyone else, it probably isn't -- at least until the features we've come to expect are fixed and/or added.

    Great Game but Nothing New

I remember when I first got the original rock band over 8 years ago for the PlayStation 3 and it was an absolute blast to play. Over the years, the company started adding other instruments that I never got to try out and more songs. After several years of of high school and all of college go by, they finally come out with a rock band for the ps4 and I had no choice but to impulse buy it because I've been wanting to play for the longest time. My first instinct when I get the game fired up is that not much has changed in the 8 years since I got the original bundle. The drums have the same four pads and single bass pedal. The guitar has the same two sets of five frets with a single strum and whammy. There is also a microphone included. The only thing that I feel has changed is different songs. While the gameplay is still really fun, it feels like all the good songs have already been released on previous versions of the game. It's not like the new guitar hero where they completely changed the game mechanics by using six frets in a different layout. The new rock and is basically just for those who don't want to keep their PS3 around just for rock band. While it is possible to play previously downloaded dlc songs that were purchased over the years on this new rock band, I never really spent the extra money to get them. As for the equipment that the game comes with, the drums are much better than the original drum set and I love how they have built in sound dampening so my drum banging isn't heard throughout the entire house. The bass pedal is still reinforced with metal so you don't have to worry about it breaking like on the first generation drums. Bluetooth wireless without a dongle is also a nice touch. Buy this bundle if you've had an urge to play rock band without having to pull out your last gen console and instruments!

I've played RB2 but skipped RB3, and I remember it being a great way to have fun with a group of people. While this remains the case, some features have been left out. There isn't any online play, only leader boards, some people coming from RB3 will miss the lack of keyboard, and the create-a-character options seem lacking from previous installments. The instruments are built solid enough. I don't notice anything different from the previous ones, take that how you will. Also I was able to find songs that I previously purchased way back on RB2 available for free in the song store, not all mind you, and in order to find old songs you must browse the entire catalog one song at a time to see if the free songs are available to you. Gameplay is really unchanged from previous games. The career modes now have branching paths to take. Some decisions will offer more fans, money, free gear or clothing. While this is refreshing, the overall selection of things to buy for your character is lacking. Even with some features missing, I find this game really shines when you play with a group of friends. Like those old N64 days of fun split screen gaming. To me, this is the main reason to purchase the game.

If you liked the previous Rock Band games, you'll like this one too. My major problems with it are: -Guitar still feels cheap. Going back to the older versions of Guitar Hero/Rock Band, the Rock Band guitars were lagging in quality compared to the Guitar Hero ones. The Rock Band guitar has significantly improved in this generation, but the buttons still aren't quite as fluid as the previous gen Guitar Hero guitar. -No option to buy additional guitars yet. Seriously? You have to be kidding me. Pros: I can't think of any distinct pros - aside from a slightly better guitar, it is basically a refresh of Rock Band 3. I liked RB3, and I like RB4 also. Rock Band 4 vs Guitar Hero Live: Guitar Hero Live gets my vote. It doesn't have drums (at least for now... who knows if some are coming eventually?), but the redesigned fretting is really fun. I was expecting the new Guitar Hero guitars to completely kill my enjoyment of the game. Luckily, this wasn't the case. It certainly takes some getting used to the new style, and I got frustrated a few times along the way. From what I've heard, it may be easier for someone new to the franchise to pick it up than someone like me who has hundreds, if not thousands of hours with the old fret style. That being said, my favorite part of Rock Band/Guitar Hero was learning how to play - and the times my fingers managed to hit a particularly difficult phrase without me even knowing exactly what they were doing (if you have a lot of playtime on expert level, you'll know what I mean). I'm at a point where I can't get that anymore from Rock Band guitar. The new Guitar Hero gives me that feeling again. So, I'm giving the edge to Guitar Hero, because they made the guitar part much better than Rock Band has for this generation. I certainly still enjoy Rock Band, but I've found myself mostly playing drums on it now. It's still an enjoyable experience, but just not as fun as learning how to play (fake) guitar again.

Rock Band 4 is exactly what it says on the box, the game you knew and loved now playable on the newest generation of consoles. The character creation isn't quite as robust as it has been in the past and the initial lineup of songs is a little hit and miss, but with compatibility for previous games and a huge DLC library already up this is almost a non-issue. If you've got a party or group event you need to entertain people at, Rock Band will never fail to impress.

Rock Band 4 is back in a huge way! The song line up out of the box is sparse and not too great. BUT the category of songs on sale on PSN and XBL are about 2000 songs from many new and old classic songs. The drums, mic, and guitar are of the highest quality Mad Catz has made. They have their own built-in firmware support which Mad Catz occassionally updates for download on both drums and guitar. They improve them over time and are amazing! This is worth a buy especially on party nights.

I got Rock Band for my PS4 and the drums, guitar and microphone all work great. The only thing that wasn't great was the songs it came with. Some were good but most were average. I ended up purchasing several songs from the PlayStation store for it. It is really fun to get together with friends and play.

All three of my kids really enjoy this game and having their friends over to play with them. Gotta admit, it's got me hooked as well. The only downside is it could come with more up to date songs. If you want those, you have to purchase them.

As another entry in the music / rhythm genre, Rock Band 4 offers great moments of fun. The setlist is varied and interesting, despite being to modern for my taste. As a longtime fan, I have gotten much enjoyment from this game. But it is not without problems. To get right down to it, the game is unfinished. It is missing many features - practice mode and online multiplayer being most prominent - and the instruments have various issues. To their credit, these are all being addressed in firmware upgrades and patches to the game. For this reason, I recommend that you wait a month or two until the game is in a better state. If you absolutely can't wait, however, you'll still have a good time.

If there's one video game I love is this one, love the drums and my husband loves the singing. It is a lot of fun and we can purchase extra songs online, my only complain is that they don't have a broader variety of songs available for purchase.

Overall, rb4 is an awesome whole family fun game. But the songs that comes free are limited and for someone who doesn't listen to rock it is kind of hard to get into it. Had to BUY another $80 worth of songs so that wife and kids could enjoy it completely. The vocal is not hard at all and doesn't seem accurate. Just talk and u are on key. Other than that, the drums and guitar are hard but once you nail it, it feels great. I am a first time player of this game as well. Overall, it's a blast and families will enjoy this game.

This is a fun game, however, the song selection wasn't great. You can buy more songs online, but what you have on the game when you buy it can get boring. If you bought songs on the previous rock band games and you got the new game on the same family of systems, mean PS3 to PS4 or Xbox 360 to Xbox One, you have access to your old DLC songs. The biggest issue I have is that the bundle only comes with 1 guitar, the drums and a mic. At the time of review there is no way to buy an extra guitar so 4 people can play.

I have been a fan of Rock Band for quite a long time. I had used to play Guitar Hero, but I never really got into it. Then I saw the trailer for Green Day Rock Band. Being the hype driven über Green Day teenage fan that I was, I bought it the day it came out. And since then, I have bought all the subsequent Rock Band games that had been released. In March 2015, the trailer for Rock Band 4 was released, and so excited to get it. My life had gone through many changes in the months leading up to the release. I lost my girlfriend, lost my job, got a new job, lost my living situation, then found a new place. The day had come. I walked into best buy determined that despite the four other stores I had gone to not having the band-in-a-box bundle that I would leave victorious. I walked to the game aisle. I see the Rock Band section set-up. And as I gazed upon the glorious sight, I noticed something was quite wrong. The band-in-a-box bundle. It wasn't there on the shelf. It was nowhere in sight. Sighing, I prepare myself to leave disappointed. As I'm walking with dismay, an employee came up to me, asking if I needed help finding anything. I answer, telling her of my situation of there not being any band-in-a-box bundles. She quickly replies, telling me to follow her. She informs me they have some to the side near customer service. My heart beats faster, my walking feels lighter. I see it just ahead of me. I am so excited and overjoyed. Opening the box and setting up was seamless. But getting old DLC? Pain in the rear. It plays like a Rock Band game, but it lacks features that I would've appreciated having that were previously in Rock Band 3. However, as Harmonix continues to update the game with features, this will be the Rock Band 4 that I will continue to play for years to come.

I have been waiting for Rock Band to come out on PS4 and it finally is. I like it pretty good. The songs are just so-so. But I really like the guitar it is awesome! Having problems with the drum pedal not working at all. Tried 3 of my old foot pedals and they all work fine. But the new one won't even work at all. Still trying to get that worked out. Overall it is a must buy. I can't wait until Green Day rock band and RB1 and 2 songs are able to import.

There is a lot to like about this game. My number 1 thing is that it is a great game for the family. I have two daughters (ages 8 and 12) and they both really enjoy. It is really the only game that I have for the PS4 that we all play together. I'm usually on guitar, 12 year old on drums, wife on bass, 8 year old on vocals. Music crosses genres, which is fine. Biggest challenges is making sure the youngest is singing a song she already knows. I appreciate that you can download songs you had in the past wit Rock Band 3, but since I never bought any I can't speak to that. Biggest draw back is the expense of the game. But if you are thinking to update, it really seems that you are better off just getting the whole package. We were led to believe that we could use our old instruments, but there are a number of adapters that you need to buy. After purchasing all of them, the price difference between that and all new was negligible.

It's Rock Band. You use your toy instruments and hit the notes. If you've played a Rock Band or Guitar Hero game before, you know exactly what to expect. It's a tried-and-true formula that the game hasn't strayed from. Unfortunately, Rock Band's transition into the new console generation isn't as strong as I'd hoped. The game itself is pretty barebones, lacking any form of online gameplay. Harmonix does, plan to continue adding more features to the game, but don't expect much at the moment. This would have been more acceptable if the game had a great setlist, but Rock Band 4 includes only 65 on disc. If you truly want to enjoy this game, exporting songs from the older games (if you're eligible) and buying DLC is pretty much required. The instrument peripherals themselves are standard fare. I've had no problems with mine, and I do appreciate them being wireless.

Unlike Guitar Hero, RB mostly repeats their previous formula, actually regressing (RB3 had you actually learning how to play for real). I think the RB team needs to think outside the box a bit and bring elements that spices up engagement. There are artists out there that put on quite a bit of a production, so it would be interesting to see that here. They knocked it out of the park with Beatles RB in that respect. Heck, even Lego RB had a nice twist to it. I'm thinking Iron Maiden, Queen, KISS are right up the alley to this end. Or if you need to go more mainstream, take some newer bands that use visuals more than others and bundle them together in the game. The game does let you port most of your previously purchased songs from earlier iterations, although not true for any of the Beatles tracks.
