I thought I would try this to assist in learning the guitar. While I think it's great that you can plug into the xbox and do some nifty things with the guitar, it still needs to attempt to cater to real beginners. I think it needs a little refinement in going over the real basics before just throwing songs at you.

I bought this for my 16 year old grandson. He plays guitar and is still learning. He also plays Xbox a lot. I thought it would be great if he could play Xbox and actually develop a useable skill instead of just wasting time. He loves it!!! He spent 4 hours playing the first time out of the box!!! At that rate he'll be an excellent guitar player in no time!!!!

It shows you a lot of basics but not much more than that. The bass expansion is pretty cool.

    Makes learning guitar more interesting

I was very excited when this game released. I'm a guitar player and used to play in a band in local bars and pubs. I'm into gaming, too, so this seemed like the best combo. Unfortunately, the game doesn't really let you jump straight into jamming. Whenever you start playing a new song, It starts at the easy difficulty and adjusts bit by bit each time you replay the song. It was really frustrating for me to start this way. Also, the game requires you to check if the guitar is in tune at the start of each song. I own a few expensive guitars that doesn't go out of tune easily, so, while playing one song over and over to unlock it fully I was forced to sit through the "check your tuning" screen 8 times. Also, I was excited to learn guitar solos on some of my favorite songs. But the menu was cumbersome in getting to the actual part of the song you want to learn. Once I got there, "Let's start the guitar solo!" the game again made me check the tuning on my guitar. For every time I want to replay a 20 second long guitar solo, I had to sit through the tuning screen. I found this feature very irritating. There is a massive DLC library online, and the DLC tracks are also compatible with Rocksmith 2014. Ubisoft apparently heard the feedback and made many adjustments to the game for Rocksmith 2014. If you are looking at this game, maybe you should pick up the 2014 version, since you might have a smoother time with that version.

Ok, I am a musician. From Pre-Elementary with piano lessons for years, then Grade school with Trumpet (and all brass through high school). Bass Guitar starting mid High School Jass Band. So, does Rocksmith teach you? Well, not in a musical fashion. But in a Guitar Hero way. Yes, you play the notes, but in a tablature style, not musical staff/scale/half,quarter,eight note style. Yes, your fingers gain memory. Yes, you learn chords. And Yes, you learn Techniques (Harmonics, tremelos, bends, double stops, etc) From a musician's standpoint, I have ZERO issues recommending this "GAME" to an absolute begginer to guitar, and if they catch on, Great! If they don't catch on, then I'll also suggest getting Lessons off You-Tube, DVD's or real instructor. Finger positioning can really through people off as this "GAME" won't tell you fingering and people can become frustrated. Or just use 1 Finger to try to hit Each note as they fly by, instead of using all 4. Anyway, it's a blast! Oh, 1 Cable will fit PC, XBOX, PS3. I found this out when I bought 2 XBOX and 1 PC version (so I can jam on PC) The cables are identical in every way. Just a Guitar to USB jack that can work on PC w/o Rocksmith as a MIC input. So I returned 1 XBOX version w/o opening it. And use the cable (for my wife) back and forth from PC to XBOX.

My husband can already play the guitar very well. I wanted to learn so I can play with him. I have had it since Christmas, and I am already qualifying for gigs and playing sets. I play it an hour or two every day. I love it Its easy to learn with Rocksmith. My husband is learning the Bass now and doing really well.

    Awesome really does teach guitar

Tis game is awesome in that it really does teach you to play a real guitar. There is a somewhat annoying thing before playing each leve where you have to pluck each string to make sure your guitar is in tune, but other than that it is pretty awesome.

    Not meant for the musician

My son purchased this game out of his Christmas money with the hope of improving his guitar playing. Unfortunately, the game is set up like Guitar Hero, so it's more of a game than a method for improving your playing. It lags considerably and the fret board on the screen moves side to side, so it's very difficult to tell which fret you should be on. If you want a game with decent music and don't mind the price, buy it. If you want to improve on the guitar, save your money for another product. I have played guitar for over 20 years and could not believe how horrible this was. What's worse is that since the game is opened, it cannot be returned.
