I cannot overstate how much I enjoy this film; I used to nearly watch it everyday in high school and college as my "homework background sound" and still do to this day. The story behind my purchase is that I finally lost my DVD which is roughly a decade old and have been putting off my purchase. I finally caved in and watched. I've seen the re-release (I originally watched this on VHS for years and finally DVD so I'm very familiar with the film intimately) and I actually enjoyed this version! The subtitles were the "yellow" variant and, unlike the prior release which was in white, its less likely to blend into the background and is both more visually pleasing and easier to read given the films scene-color choices. Add to it the translation, words used during subtitles and usage of "expression words" from the original Japanese match closer to the actual wording. The best thing was the audio; there are sounds from all prior editions that were released that didn't have certain audio sounds as clear as before and its noticeable. It adds to the film I feel and its a welcome surprise to hear things in the background I didn't before. Would reccomend!

If you like Patlabor, you'll love this. It's got gorgeous visuals, and the launch scene near the end is a treat I'll not soon forget. The story is also heavily political, despite being in a fantastical setting (I did not realize this took place in a fictional world). This definitely has a slower burn, though, and some people don't appreciate that, but if you're into that, it's worth a watch. (or multiple watchings!)

I've loved this movie for a long time, and it is great to finally see it on Blu-Ray. I think it is one of the finest feature length Japanamation films ever made.

This film challenges you to place yourself in a time when space travel had not yet taken place and challenges you to contemplate the worthiness of the pursuit, both politically and philosophically. A bit slow at some times, but you'll keep finding new things to enlighten you with each repeated viewing.

    Old-fashioned movie about ideals

Genre: Drama Length: 125 minutes "In a world eerily similar to our own, war between the Kingdom of Honneamise and its archrival, The Republic, seems inevitable. But even as the two nations' rapidly evolving technology creates new ways to wage greater and more deadly forms of warfare, a small group seeks to use those same advances to propel mankind forward into the future and into space in their world's first manned spaceflight program. For astronaut candidate Shirotsugh Lhadatt, it's not just a journey beyond the reach of the atmosphere, but a personal odyssey as he grows from an aimless young man into a leader willing to put everything on the line in order to move the human race forward and away from the brink of Armageddon. Prepare to witness the legendary film that revolutionized the anime industry, launched the careers of dozens of today's animation superstars and put Studio Gainax forever on the map as one of Japan's premiere production houses. Staggering animation, brilliant storytelling and a scope that goes beyond epic combine to produce an emotional powerhouse that will send your spirit flying towards the stars with "The Royal Space Force: Wings of Honneamise!" 1987! This movie was in production for 5 years and didn't release until spring break of 1987...I wasn't even 3 years old at this point! With a whopping budget of over 800 million yen #about $8million U.S. dollars today, but a lot more at the time due to higher currency value and inflation#, this movie better have been a masterpiece. And it definitely delivers in a major way. Love. War. And the Final Frontier. That's what the movie is trying to express and it does pretty well on two of them. War is ever present. As long as man exists, then so will war. What starts out as pretty light-hearted becomes more somber as those unaccostomed to war are the targets of assassinations and invasions due to old fueds. Space: the final frontier. It's the goal of the movie from the beginning even if those involved thought it was a joke of some sort. After discovering his goal or ideal, Shiro changes from a slacker to a man on a mission to explore the stars. Love...it might be there, but I wasn't really feeling it. Shiro definitely has an interest in Riquinni, but she never returns his feelings and doesn't really even seem to understand what love is. The Blu-ray remaster of this is pretty awesome. No way that you'd think it was made 26 years ago by the graphics. The big goofy smiles are a bit of a giveaway to the older time period as well as the slight Macross/Robotech feeling to the artwork. Overall, an amazing movie that I'm glad I ordered. Was about to give up on ordering it as I kept on getting processing errors, but I tried again that night and it went through. Arrived in 2 days as well! Pick it up and you'll enjoy it.
