Samsung 990 Pro with Heatsink Gen 4 NVMe -2TB unit The Samsung 990 Pro is your standard 2280 form factor M.2 MVMe with 1GB of primary chaching DRAM for every 1TB of NAND. According to Samsung the controller is an in house design that offers a 50% improvement in power efficiency over the 980 Pro. As advertised this unit with Heatsink is compatible with the PS5. Since the PS5 only comes with 825GB of storage adding this 2TB drive can give you the storage you need for all the downloadable games that are out there. And it is fast – it is on par with the built in drive and it actually seems to be slightly faster though the PS5 software clocks it at the same speed. Installation is a snap if you need some assistance, the Playstation site gives you instructions on adding the drive and it can’t really be any easier. There are also videos out there showing exactly how to remove the covers. After removing the bottom cover there is a small plate with the M.2 slot under it. Move the screw mount to the top hole and install the drive. Since this unit has a Heatsink already you just screw the unit down put the cover back on and slide the bottom cover back. When you plug it back in it asks you to format the drive, which progresses quickly in under a minute, and you are up and running. The Heatsink is as good as it looks and fits perfectly and does what a Heatsink should do – keeps the drive cool! Moving games and data from your built in drive is easy and fast. I run my favorite games, buffer online content and Blueray DVD’s on the drive and this thing does it all reliably and fast. And the speed is consistent with no performance drops due to overheating. This drive is also good to upgrade that laptop if you want some new fast storage space. But mine is going to help me with all that use my PS5 gets.

The 990 Pro extends Samsung’s leadership in the NVMe SSD space with a capable upgrade from the 980 Pro. This unit has a heatsink providing additional thermal dispersion to support the increased performance and throughput. Installation was very straightforward. I used this SSD in my PC as an additional data disk rather than a boot drive. I located the available M.2 slot on my motherboard where I was planning to install the drive. After powering the PC back on I noticed the built-in LED on the heatsink which is cool addition for knowing that the drive is receiving power and functioning, though compared to other RGB elements in my setup the single segment of LED doesn’t feel like enough – if you don’t like the red color you can change the color through the Magician application (more on this later). I proceeded with setting up the drive through the Disk Management Utility in Windows 11 where I created a new partition and volume which I then mounted so that I could begin utilizing it. SSDs are different from hard drives so firmware improvements can make a big difference to the life and the performance of the drive. So, while it’s optional, I recommend installing the Samsung Magician software to verify that the firmware is up to date as well as run some performance diagnostics. I got a really impressive 7100 MB/s read and 6754 MB/s write along with 441406 and 386230 IOPS for the read and write respectively in the Magician application with unspecified settings. I ran additional tests in CrystalDisk Mark which I've attached to this review. Especially impressive is the random reads and writes of this drive which show solid improvement over the 980 and other comparable SSDs. For the most part I’ve been using it for photo/video storage and editing as well as storage for games. My primary boot drive that was using for media storage as well is a 1TB SSD from Micron which is a bit slower (about 34% in sequential read/writes) so needless to say I’ve noticed a considerable improvement when importing and rendering out video when utilizing the new drive especially thanks to the incredible random read/write performance.

OVERVIEW: I have tested the Samsung 990 Pro (with heatsink) in three devices. An Acer Predator Helios Neo 16 laptop, a Dell i5415 AIO, and an ORICO M2 SSD USB 3.1 Gen2 Hard Drive Enclosure. Installed in the correct platform, it preforms extremely well. When installed in a less than desirable platform, it performs just OK. And when on-sale it is a very cost-effective upgrade. ACER PREDATOR: 2023 Helios Neo 16 with two NVMe PCIe Gen 4x4 slots. Installed in the 2nd NVMe slot, booted back up, and then installed the combination Samsung Magician/Migration application. Was able to clone the Acer default 500GB drive onto the 2TB 990 in less than 5 minutes. Removed the default 500mb drive to keep as a backup while moving the 990 2GB to where the original drive was installed in the Predator. The 990 Pro with heatsink fit in the Acer laptop, in either 2280 location, when the bottom was reinstalled. Magician Benchmark Speeds: Sequential Read 6568 MB/s, Sequential Write 6040 MB/s, Random Read 441406 IOPS, and Random Writes 385230 IOPS. Currently I have not encountered any issues relating to the 990 Pro in this mid-level gaming laptop. Very cool indeed. DELL i5415: After installing the combined Magician and Migration app, I was able to install and successfully clone from a Samsung 860 SATA SSD to the 990 Pro in about 8 minutes. Then removed the 860 leaving the 990 as the booting drive that functioned just fine. I thought the i5415 motherboard was MNVe PCIe GEN-4, but the Magician app says it’s a GEN-3, so the speed is about half of its capabilities, but still significantly faster than the much slower 860 SSD. Note I did not intend to use the 990 in this AIO for any significant time, I just wanted to see how well it functioned with installation, cloning, speed, boot up, etc. Also, the 990 with heatsink installed in this AIO, the rear metal shielding cover will not fit back correctly due to the height of the 990 angular heatsink without modification. ORICO NVMe ENCLOSURE: I originally purchased this case thinking I might want to clone the MVNe for use in my Asus GA402XV replacing the stock 500GB drive. But there were three reasons that stopped that trial. First, the Samsung Magician app would not recognize the 990, only the Orico USB interface. Second, my data is encrypted on this Asus laptop and Samsung Data Migration will not clone an encrypted drive. And third, the heatsink was too tall for the very thin G14 bottom case. Now the USB case/enclosure does recognize the data that is on the 990 after it was cloned from another PC if in the future you need an access method for the data on the drive outside of the PC. Always good to know in advance with having the hardware on hand to access your data if/when your primary PC is down. FIRMWARE: The 990 Pro sent to me had Samsung’s current (as of 07/22/23) firmware 3B2QJXD7 as reflected in the Magician application. From Samsung Support Website, Download Tools and Software: NVMe SSD-990 PRO Firmware *To improve the abnormalities regarding drive locked on Magician software. ISO 3B2QJXD7 | 33.6MB HEATSINK: Very cool angular top designed heatsink with its own single RGB LED. From the Samsung Magician app, you can select the LED color, along with choosing Off, On, Pulsating, or Breathing. Interesting, but a feature I will never use other than “bragging rights”; therefore, it will be turned off in the Magician app. HEATSINK REMOVAL: This is a “heads up” from internet research. First, removing the heatsink will void your warranty; there is a label on the side of the drive stating so. Second, this PS5 designed heatsink is attached with four P5 1.2mm Pentalobe screws (some of the smallest screws I have ever seen). If you require removal of the heatsink, you will need the proprietary Pentalobe screwdriver as used on Apple Macbooks for their back cover removal. Once the four screws are removed, you will then need to gently and slowly pry off the top heatsink that is stuck on with their adhesive thermal pads. Same process for the bottom plate if you wish to remove that too. I would mention that if your primary intended goal is not to use the heatsink for whatever reason, I strongly recommend you purchase the 990 Pro without it. Although I did not remove the heatsink, I can see where some, including myself, could end up destroying the drive due to the adhesive pads if not extremally careful. And again, once you remove the heatsink, you just voided the warranty.

The Samsung 990 PRO 2TB Internal SSD PCIe Gen 4x4 NVMe with Heatsink is Samsung’s latest entry into the fast and furious top-end consumer’s market and the Specs are looking great. Designed and built for Gaming, Content Development, Video Editing, Data Analysis, 3D Modeling and 3D Printing Design. Approximately twenty SSDs are installed in our home/business computers, and this is the first LED Heatsink SSD I’ve had the pleasure of installing! Looks are everything, right! The heatsink design is icing on the cake, looks fantastic, does the job and fits into a laptop. Installed my 990 Pro Heatsink into the recently released Alienware m16 R1 gaming laptop for my data drive. (see pictures) I am impressed that Samsung took the initiative to design an M.2 SSD heartsink for PCIe 4x4 performance gaming machines that fits in a gaming laptop. Samsung builds their SSDs to the highest standard of quality and performance in both their SATA and PCIe NVMe lines, and the Samsung 990 Pro is no exception. Thrilled last year to receive the Samsung 980 Pro with heatsink that achieves a Maximum Data Transfer Rate performance rate of up to 7000 megabytes per second. Samsung’s latest 990 Pro entry into the upper echelon of NVMe M.2 PCIe 4x4s pushes the Data Transfer Rate bar higher. The 990 Pro achieves 1400K/1550K IOPS with sequential read/write throughput up to 7450/6900 MB/s - near the max performance of PCIe 4.0. During benchmarking the 990 Pro remained stable with no thermal throttling, which is high praise for Samsung's in-house controller's smart heat control and heatsink. Quotable Quotes: “more than 55% improvement in random read/write performance enables faster loads for an ultimate gaming experience on PS5 and Direct Storage PC games” ““more performance while using less power. Enjoy up to 50% improved performance per watt over 980 PRO” Samsung Data Migration Software; have utilized many times over the years installing new Samsung drives. Samsung Data Migration is rock solid, never any issues, always successful. When transferring data from one Samsung NVMe drive to another the transfer rate was at 260MB/s. Makes for a short wait to get your system back on-line. The other important tool in the Samsung box of goodies is Samsung Magician, the best SSD management system on the market. Magician - the complete SSD Toolbox: - Optimization Tools - Diagnostics - Drive Encryption - Health Monitoring - Benchmarking - Over Provisioning (one of my favorites) - Complete Drive Information and Details - Secure Erase - Firmware Updates The Samsung Migration and Magician are The Benchmark for SSD software. You may get the impression that I really like the new Samsung generation of NVMe M.2 SSDs, well you would be right. It is quality, class-leading speed, has the thermal heating sorted out and again delivers magic. Amazingly the new 990 Pro Heatsink can be had for a song!

So I finally ran out of space on my PS5 (thanks, Call of Duty...), and after way too much research, I went with the Samsung 990 Pro 2TB with the heatsink—and I’m glad I did. First off, installing it was way easier than I expected. I’m not super techy, but it literally took me maybe five minutes, and that includes finding the tiny screwdriver I always lose. It fit perfectly, the PS5 recognized it instantly, and formatting was super fast. Now the real reason I’m writing this: the speed. This thing is insanely fast. Games load just as quick as the built-in storage, and honestly, I can't even tell the difference. I moved a bunch of games over and everything runs smooth—zero issues. And 2TB means I’m not constantly debating which game to delete every time a new one drops. The built-in heatsink is also a nice bonus. I didn’t want to mess with buying a separate one or figuring out thermal pads. This one is ready to go out of the box, and I’ve had zero heat issues. Bottom line: if you're on the fence, just get it. It’s not the cheapest SSD out there, but if you want something fast, easy to install, and reliable, this is the one. I don’t think about storage anymore—and that’s exactly how it should be.

The new Samsung 990 Pro 2TB SSD is a great choice for expanding the memory storage on your PS5 or PC. This is the Heatsink included version, so you won't need to buy one and the heatsink is already installed so you won't have to find a T4 star bit to install it. Its design is gaming aethetic with a little RGB light in the center, this however won't be visible if you're using it on a PS5 since it'll be covered by the housing plate and the outer fin plates. Its a lightning fast SSD with read/write speeds of 7,450/6,900 MB/s, which is an upgrade from the previous model 980 Pro which had a read/write speed of 7,000/5,000MB/s. The 990 Pro also seems to have fixed a read speed issue that was seen by users who had a 980 Pro installed on PS5. A large number of users were finding the 980 Pro 1TB/2TB on PS5 were getting read speeds of <5500Mb/s, but now the 990 Pro is reaching over 6500Mb/s which is more in line with its performance benchmarks and with that of the competition. I was actually using a 980 Pro 1TB in my PS5 for a year and upgraded to the 990 Pro 2TB, I can definitely see a difference in how fast my PS4/PS5 games load. The only issue I can find is that the memory sizes are limited to 1TB and 2TB, while the previous model had options for 250GB, 500GB, 1TB, and 2TB, most people will probably choose higher sizes but having options is always better than not having them. Overall, I would definitely recommend the Samsung 990 Pro.

I had been having some issues with a newer computer utilizing Optane M2 memory, and decided it was time for a switch. Enter in the Samsung 990 Pro M.2 drive. I replaced the Optane memory module and 7200RPM hard drive with this NVMe unit - and it's like I have a brand new machine again - only better. I cannot say enough about upgrading your PCs disk - it is likely the single biggest impact you can make to your system as long as you already have enough RAM to function. I'm running Windows 10 Pro and the Samsung 990 Pro drive the system with ease! Let's talk about speed for a second. My old spinning drive clocked in with a score of about 2400 using the Passmark Performance Test utility. I use this tool to compare all my systems and components so I have a baseline to compare by. The new Samsung 990 Pro - clocked in at a WHOPPING 29800 - more than 10x as fast as my old drive. The feel on the performance is truly night and day. I've attached some pictures of the performance test and a detailed test on the disk. Overall, I'm supper happy that this drive made my PC new again! This is a great investment in the performance and longevity of your machine - you won't be sorry! Just make sure to backup your data and apps so you can reinstall them on the new disk!

After recently installing a Samsung 990 Pro SSD in my gaming laptop and seeing what a difference it makes, I just had to get one to expand the storage space in my PlayStation 5. Installation was simple except for trying to figure out how to remove the side panel of my PS5 which I had to look up the trick online. Once the panel of my PS5 was removed, I used a small screwdriver to remove the one screw on the SSD cover exposing the additional storage slot. I removed the screw used to hold the new SSD in place, slotted the SSD firmly into place and reinstalled the screw. After replacing the SSD cover and PS5 side panel, I was ready to plug it back in for set up and use. After turning the PS5 back on, it automatically recognized the new Samsung 990 Pro SSD and requested to format it which took less than a minute. The PS5 automatically performed a speed test to ensure it could handle the load speeds and confirmed it was reading almost 7000 mb/second and, according to Samsung, can go up to 7450 mb/second which is nearly twice as fast as the previous SSD I had in my laptop. The new Samsung 990 Pro SSD is one of the best upgrades I made for both my laptop and PS5 and noticed the load and read speed increase right away.

I recently upgraded my gaming experience by adding the Samsung 990 PRO 2TB Internal SSD PCIe Gen 4x4 NVMe with Heatsink to my PS5, and I must say it has been a game-changer in every sense of the word. First and foremost, the installation process was a breeze. The sleek design and the inclusion of a dedicated heatsink not only ensured easy installation but also kept the temperatures in check during intense gaming sessions, guaranteeing optimal performance. The PCIe Gen 4x4 NVMe technology has significantly reduced load times, delivering a lightning-fast gaming experience. Games now load seamlessly, and I find myself spending more time enjoying the gameplay rather than waiting for levels to load. The substantial 2TB storage capacity is a massive bonus, allowing me to store a plethora of games without worrying about running out of space. Samsung's reputation for reliability is well-reflected in this SSD. The robust build quality and the inclusion of advanced technologies assure me that my gaming library is in safe hands. The performance consistency has been outstanding, whether I'm exploring open-world landscapes or engaging in fast-paced multiplayer matches. What truly sets this SSD apart is its compatibility with the PS5. The integration is seamless, and the enhanced data transfer rates are fully harnessed by the console's capabilities. The result is a gaming experience that feels next-gen, with rapid access to game assets and reduced stuttering during gameplay. The addition of the heatsink not only ensures optimal performance but also adds a touch of premium aesthetics to my PS5 setup. It's clear that Samsung has paid attention to both form and function, creating a product that not only performs exceptionally well but also looks great in my gaming rig. In conclusion, the Samsung 990 PRO 2TB Internal SSD with Heatsink is a must-have for any serious gamer looking to elevate their PS5 experience. It combines speed, reliability, and ample storage capacity in a sleek package, making it an excellent investment for those who want the best in gaming technology. I bought this samsung 2tb ssd to add storage space to the playstation 5 as the stock internal ssd was running out of space. After installing the ssd in the slot and turning on the PS5 after, it will display a message to format it for optimal use. As soon as it finishes formating, it will show the read speed of the ssd. I dont remember the exact read speed of my ssd but it was around 656X. I then transferred all the installed games on the internal ssd to the samsung ssd. I had about 500 gb size of games to move, it was quick and didnt wait for much time to finish. In actual game boot up or gameplay, everything loads and starts quickly. I played/tested Resident Evil 2 Remake PS5 version and when I chose the save file to load, it only took 1 to 2 seconds for the press x to start message to appear. Everything seems to start and load faster than the internal ssd. There is a 1Tb option as well if you are looking for that size space. I am happy and satisfied with this ssd, so I highly recommend this one.

This SSD does not fit an Asus Z170-Pro motherboard! The motherboard's single NVME slot is right next to the SATA cable connectors, and the plastic shell of this SSD's heatsink makes it LESS THAN 1mm TOO WIDE. A shame. Other than that, it's a great SSD. High capacity, high read speed. Only $10 more than the non-heatsink version, so why not go for the upgrade.

Spent a long time researching specs. It met all minimum requirements for ps5 and exceeded some. The performance seems on point have not had any issues playing games directly from memory. Very easy to install and drive is recognized immediately by PS5. It comes with a built in heat sink but I bought a separate slotted vent to help just in case. I don't remember much about the warranty but I haven't had to use it so that's a win. Great value for the money actually the best price for the specs needed. I'm assuming warranty is good since product seems to be free of defects.

Samsung has yet another top tier solid state drive on their hands, with a decent sized heatsink that can fit into a PS5, but also help keep the drive cool in a PC. I tested the peak speeds with a B660 itx system, on the “back” M.2 slot, which I believe is attached to the chipset, and not directly to the CPU. Even so, the scores under Crystal Disk Mark were near the top I’ve seen vs a couple other 4.0 M.2 drives I’ve seen. Sequential reads were well over 7GB/s and the writes were at 6.7GB/s, with the random reads and writes were super fast as well also. (I included the CDM screenshot, and from what I’ve researched, the numbers are a touch lower than they can be best case scenario with a CPU attached 4.0 slot) Due to the drive being on the back of my motherboard, I expected it to be VERY hot, because of little to no airflow, but the heatsink seems to be doing the trick, moving around 40gb of files (averaged ~2GB/s) back and forth to another 4.0 drive I have, only had the drive peaking around the mid 60s C, which is completely fine, and doesn’t seem to throttle the drive. All these positives being said, and even with Samsung having the absolute top drives over MANY previous years, keep an eye out for deals on other drives, and even other Samsung based options. There are MANY options now, but this one is still top tier!

The Samsung 990 Pro 2TB SSD with heatsink is a minor improvement over the predecessor 980 pro, but probably a much more significant step up from just about any other drive out there. These types of drives are reaching the theoretical limits of the design and the 980 Pro probably comes closer than any other to reaching that limit. I tested the 990 Pro on an Alienware gaming desktop PC with an i9 12900KF processor using CrystalDiskMark and while the results were very good I was a little surprised by the results vs a 980 Pro SSD. The read speed was actually very slightly worse on the 990 pro vs the 980 pro. It was a very small amount and probably negligible in the real world. However the write speed was significantly better, by about 20%. This is a really nice improvement and I can certainly tell the difference while I'm using the computer. I also tested the thermal properties of the 990 pro given the heatsink. I have had a NVMI SSD fail due to overheating so I was keen to test the temperatures under load. Using the same CrystalDiskBench test the highest temperature I saw was 54C which is well below the safe working temperature, and about 20C below what I saw with my previous SSD. Plus the heatsink has cool LED lights...

Well worth the purchase if you value performance. Read and Write speed are outstanding. Heatsink does a pretty good job of keeping cool. LED light for operating verification is nice as well if running in a desktop set up. Would highly recommend. Yes a little pricey but well worth it for today gaming and pc performance.

Ridiculous speeds, minimal load times on PS5. There is practically nothing wrong with how this drive performs. However, I would not recommend this drive to someone who cannot update the firmware, which requires a PC motherboard with an M.2 slot. There was a past firmware version that caused significant drive health problems, shortening the drive’s life by years potentially. If you can’t check/update firmware, I would recommend the WD_BLACK SN850X. All that said, however, my drive shipped with the latest firmware. It would appear that most of the problems have been resolved, but I would check the firmware to be safe.
