Not what I expected from Samsung
||Posted . Owned for 2 months when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I've had a lot of Samsung phones over the years, so I was excited to try this out based on the reviews. However, after a few months of owning it, all I can say is: "Eh." I wanted to like this laptop, but the processor is just not up to par. It froze every Zoom call 30 minutes in until I realized Samsung's webcam Studio software was interfering with Zoom, so I had to uninstall it. The battery is already not holding a good charge, and I've only had it 3 months. But what is most annoying and what triggered coming here to write this review: the screen brightness will not stay put. It seems to pulse after waking up from sleep in a jittery way. And oftentimes I will come back to a browser with a few windows open and they are all blank screens until the computer can catch up. It seems to be sluggish when working with moderately large photo files, too. I find this laptop to be subpar in processing ability, and overall just an "eh" machine.

Powerful and Compact on the go Computer
|Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This is the best laptop I have ever owned, though I must admit, most of my laptops have been chosen for economy rather than raw capability. Though it has the capability of operating in tablet and “tent” mode, I primarily think of it and use it as a laptop. The physical Out of the box this laptop gives the immediate impression of quality. It is sleek and the metal shell is simple and clean, though like similar metal shells I have used before, fingerprints show up quite well on the dark finish. Though the device is not very heavy, the shell and the lines give it a solid feel in the hands. The slim bezels and the tight lines make this physically smaller than a an 11” Chromebook I own. Keyboard layout is typical for a laptop without a number pad and the keys are responsive and accurate, even though they have extremely little travel. I found that possibly because of the small format and the placement of the touch pad I am far less likely to accidentally strike the touch pad while typing. The touch pad is responsive and slick in operation both swiping and clicking. The inclusion of a fingerprint sensor as part of the keyboard is nice and it blends in better than some more obvious fingerprint input scanners I have seen. There are relatively few openings, buttons, and other visible elements when closed. Along the left edge there is the power input, an HDMI port, USB-C port and headphone jack. On the right side there are 2 USB ports, a micro SD slot and the power button. There are a couple of things that I would like to have seen differently. First, the power input is a small barrel/pin type power input and I would have rather it been a USB-C power input that I could gave used with a docking station I already own rather than another power supply and cable. The other nitpick I have is with the power button. I feel like it should be closer to the hinge side than where it is on the right side. Because it is “in front” of the USB ports, I found it very easy to accidentally depress and shut the computer off while repositioning the laptop or inserting and removing USB devices. Once powered up it was obvious that the screen is outstanding on this device. The screen is extremely sharp, vibrant and with excellent color depth. Testing a variety of high-resolution videos left me extremely impressed with color and with screen refresh. The screen is glossy, but I did not have any issue with screen glare in any of the circumstances I would use a device like this. As this has a touch screen I tested with fingers and stylus and found the screen was subject to fingerprinting as I expected, though oddly the metal case showed up more prints than the screen. One thing I found was that because the hinges are “soft”, the screen tends to bounce a bit when typing and particularly when operating as a touch screen in laptop mode. While I use this device first and foremost as a laptop, I did some tests using it as a tablet and in tent mode. For me personally, I did not find it comfortable to operate as a tablet. While I am sure there are certain applications where this would be useful, it is too heavy/bulky/thick for me to operate with one hand on the device and the other operating the touch screen. I also found the feeling of the keys on the back in tablet mode uncomfortable. Tent mode is nice for media consumption while placed on a counter or desk, and I also tried it this way with a full-size USB keyboard and mouse, but I do not think I will do that very often. Here I would also mention that the speakers can get quite loud, but they have a bit of a flatter, thinner sound than I have experienced before. Good enough for a youtube video, and certainly not a deal-breaker for me as I tend to rely on headphones. Battery life also appears to be quite good as I have not yet had to charge the laptop in the week that I have had it. I would estimate that run on the batteries for about 8 hours without plugging in to top up the charge and the battery life indicator shows about 6 hours of life left without turning off features like the lighted keyboard. One of the best things about this device is just how FAST it is at everything. Cold starts are faster from power on to desktop than my Chromebook, and a LOT faster than my 16 gb desktop PC has ever been. I know Windows 10 boots faster than previous generations, but the combination of the SSD and the i7 processor really push this to basically “instant on”. This continues into using apps, which load with lightning speed and function much faster than I have ever experienced with the Win10 desktop. The only times that I have experienced slow downs or lag is when Window starts ram-rodding updates into the system. This has always been my experience with my Win10 desktop, and I will not get into a review of my grievances with the operating system. I will simply say it is probably my least favorite thing about Windows as the updates can cripple all the device’s functions. This happened to me while looking at pictures, as the laptop became unusable for over an hour while updates ate all the resources. I have changed some of the settings since, but I know that is only partially effective. Samsung has also loaded quite a bit of bloatware on the Flex. While it does not hamstring the functionality, there have been numerous on-screen prompts to activate/upgrade/use a slew of features and apps I have no interest in. To sum up I think this an exceptional and capable device in a very compact and attractive package. I may have some issues with the OS, which I cannot and will not hold against the device. I also prefer to use it in just one of it’s three possible modes, but that is probably just my preference and not a real knock on the design. If I had one wish that I could change it would be to replace the dedicated power supply/port arrangement for a USB-C/power port, and that would probably make it the perfect on-the-go Windows computer for me.
