Needs work. So does "The Samsung Experience"

I wanted to love this. I love the Wacom built in, but the touch interface is misaligned and it's difficult to impossible to click on the exact thing you want--especially in a browser. It's impossible to click on the uppermost links on a webpage because the omnibar drops down to cover it and you have to scroll down to get it to retract. Then the links are no longer on the screen. When I took it to the Samsung Experience people, they told me not to use a browser; just use apps for everything. This is definitely in the Note interface, because my Samsung Galaxy S4 works flawlessly, and doesn't have these problems. As it stands, this tablet is a non-starter. I don't recommend.

I looked at and read all the reviews about the good, the bad, and the ugly of all the tablets out there right now, and zeroed in on the Samsung 8.0, and so far it's been pretty amazing. I will say this, though, and it's not about the Samsung in particular, but about all devices and wi-fi: Working wi-fi off hot spots is enough to drive a person stark raving mad. Sometimes I get along great with a hot spot, and other times it just makes me crazy being knocked on and off and all over the place. Getting on wi-fi and staying on with my Kindle Fire can be a little iffy, and the Samsung is no better, and might even be a little bit worse. And that's disconcerting considering I have a paid for Kindle Fire that was a gift, and I just paid over $400 (with the service plan and tax) for the privilege of owning this Samsung. The Samsung 8.0 doesn't have the ability to use a data plan so you can't use it on-line on the road unless you hit a hot spot, and I just mentioned how frustrating I find a lot of hot spots. I do envy my daughter's iPad data plan but I'm sticking with my Samsung for the features it has. Besides the iPad data plan isn't exactly free so I don't see me getting it even if I opted for an iPad. I got really hung up on the technical specs when I tried to decide which tablet to buy, and finally decided that all the top rated tablets are all good enough to be labeled "amazing," so then I went for the apps and features I liked best. I like having a stylus to keep my screen clean and to do certain tasks. You can use the Samsung 8.0 without the stylus, but keep in mind that if you like the stylus and lose it, it will cost you an astounding $29.99 at Best Buy to replace it. Wowsa. I first bought a Samsung 10.1 tablet, but decided it was too big and awkward, and the 8" screen is big enough compared to my Kindle Fire 7". I can download books and read on my Kindle Fire, but I'll be able to get more apps, books, movies, and music on the Samsung. I checked "lightning fast" and "responsive screen" about the product, and it is for the most part, but I still end up click, click, clicking now and then when things stall, and I don't mean just on-line. One last little thing, if you've seen a white iPad and think it's cool, but haven't actually seen the Samsung white, I want to tell you it really isn't quite white, more kind of a light cream color. Just a little crumb of information.

Personally, I would still choose iPad for ease of use. Never liked Android since it first came out. Very hard to navigate with system, not all apps are available. Techie? Go for it!

When I purchased the Galaxy Note 8, I fell in love with it and I've used it for years. Its one of the best tablets from the Korean tech giants and it still holds up well all these years. The Android OS could be updated but I preferred the original version factory installed. It's still worth buying even now.

Love it! One of the best small tablets

The Galaxy Note 8.0 might just be the best small tablet device out there. It IS the best device for certain users – namely, those who want the capability offered by its signature feature. The S Pen. For those who aren’t quite so interested in the S Pen, the Galaxy Note 8.0 is still a great tablet but maybe not quite so interesting. One surprise for me was the screen. On paper, the specs of the screen are nothing special. Its nowhere near the resolution of the iPad Mini Retina, and just slightly better than the resolution of the original iPad Mini. But for some reason, the Galaxy Note 8.0 screen is just really really nice to look at. Colors are very well saturated and almost dripping with vibrancy. Perhaps Samsung tuned the LCD to look more like one of its AMOLED screens? Whatever the cause, it looks good. I find myself preferring this screen to the other tablets I have seen. Next, the device itself has been criticized for being too plastic-y. Well, it most certainly is pure plastic. The feel of it, though, is anything but cheap. It feels solid and warm and just really nice in the hand. On top of that, since most tablets go into a case anyway, who cares what it feels like. Personally, I like the feel. Next is the speed. The device is plenty snappy for most apps, launching them quickly and scrolling (mostly) smoothly. Its not quite as fast as a Nexus 7 with stock android, but it has a lot more features than stock android does. The one area worth noting is that while the GNote 8.0 is reasonably fast for most people, the iPad Mini Retina with the new A7 chip absolutely crushes it in 3D operations. If you are buying a tablet to run 3D heavy games, don’t get this one. It scores around 4,000 on 3D Mark; the iPad Mini Retina scores over 14,000. If you aren’t playing games, you won’t notice. The GNote and the original iPad Mini are much more closely matched on processor power, with the edge going to the Galaxy. Battery life is good, but not great. Its about the same as the Nexus 7, and not as good as the iPad Mini and Mini Retina. I would say the GNote is about 75% as good as the iPad under use, and about 50% as good on standby. If you are a heavy user, you’ll be charging the Galaxy every day. Which is much more convenient now that Samsung has ditched the proprietary charging cables it used on its other tablets and has implemented standard micro USB. Battery charging time is decent. It seems to take about 3 hours with a high-power 2amp charger. Some people have complained about the TouchWiz “skin” that Samsung puts on top of Android. I think its just fine, and offers loads of features you can’t find on other tablets. One of the most useful is the ability to have 2 programs open at the same time, which is great! You can have a WebEx presentation open and take notes at the same time. Or pull graphics from a web page into a presentation or document. Or have a spreadsheet open at the same time and a document. Its very very handy. Most other tablets simply cannot do this. One downside of the heavy customization Samsung does to Android is that Samsung is pretty slow to update the OS. The Galaxy Note 8.0 runs on Android 4.2.2 at the time of this writing (Dec 2013). That’s two full versions behind. Its not really a big deal, except that Android 4.3 offered a feature called TRIM that optimizes the flash memory storage all tablets use. Over time, flash memory can get slower and slower unless its “TRIMmed” and so the Galaxy Note may suffer from this the longer you have it. Hopefully Samsung offers an update soon. Sound is surprisingly good. Its warm and pretty clear sounding – not tinny at all. Bottom line – I love this tablet. It looks good. It feels good. Its fast. It has features that no other tablets (except its larger brother) have. And the S Pen really is unique among tablets.

    The Perfect Portable Productivity Product

For the power users, specifically in the business field, the multi-tasking capabilities of the Note 8.0 cannot be highlighted enough. Although limited in the number of apps able to use in the multi-window function, the major apps are available like gmail, chrome, music player, youtube, etc. The S-Pen truly does feel like writing from an actual pen, or as close to it from any other electronic device on the market right now. The form factor is a bit huge for a one hand operation but for a reason because the extra real estate lends itself to a better experience with taking notes. The battery is not bad as it drains about 10-15% every hour with a 50-75% brightness setting but the kicker here is that when the tablet is off, it basically uses no battery at all. For example, I had 95% when I left home for work at 7:45 AM and when I got back home at 5 PM, it was at 90%. Speakers are not too loud but loud enough to be useful. The screen is bright and detailed enough for normal viewing, so not bad at all. The weight is not heavy at all, not as light as the Ipad mini but not anything drastically different. The rear camera works like it should, meaning nothing spectacular and the camera software is decent with enough functionality to make the technology relevant. The price is high compared to its competitors but realize that this tablet also comes with expandable memory up to 64 GBs more, the S-Pen, multi-windows function, and a ton of Samsung apps whether you care for them or not, and to top it off, you still have the Google Play store to get the same apps as all other Android devices are capable of getting.

Great everyday use tablet. I love that its a wacom style stylus and not the squishy capcitive stylus. The battery life is pretty awesome, and the speed of the processor in this thing is fantastic. My only gripes are touchwiz doesn't work so great on a tablet and its a little expensive for what it is.

    Great product

It is great for someone who needs current computing technology in a lightweight, portable, and "fits in a large purse or small bag" product. It has the Android system, and the system is in the 4.x range. The camera can be used from either facing direction, which is a definite plus. The tablet has a nice slot for the stylus. The stylus is pretty nifty in what it can do beyond just being a stylus. It has a button that if pressed, turns the stylus into scissors that copies whatever one circles on the screen by using the stylus and sends the image to the camera folder. It is lightweight, thin, and has a very large screen. The power button and the volume buttons are on the side and are near each other. Sometimes when one wants to turn up the volume, the power button is clicked instead. Luckily, clicking on the power button only puts the screensaver on instead of actually turning on the device. It is annoying, but that is it.

At the time this was out, it was the more affordable alternative tablet to the iPad for me. I loved that it came with a stylus but the battery WAS awful. Camera wasn't great either and it lagged real quick. I used to be a real Android enthusiast but the fact that every year that passes by all my Android devices aged really terribly. This tablet marked my departure from the world of Android.
