Also, while the sound bar is fairly okay, the additional rear speakers are completely nonfunctional. You have to push them close to your ear lobes to even hear the faintest of sounds.

Thank you for your review of the HW-A40R Soundbar and for your feedback regarding the volume issues you are experiencing with the included rear speakers. By design, the surround speakers are supposed to simulate sounds happening behind the viewer. Therefore, most of the time the surround channels are only used for ambient sounds, which are naturally lower in volume.
However, there are a few settings you can change to adjust the surround effect to your preference:
1) Download and install the latest firmware version (ver.1014)
2) Once installed, with the Soundbar on, press and hold the STANDARD button on the remote control for about 6 seconds
3) The LEDs will blink to indicate you are in adjustment mode
4) Use the BASS Up/Down buttons to adjust the level of the REAR speakers between -6 to +6.
5) The adjustment mode will exit if the surround button is pressed, or if no button is pressed for 10 seconds
If the volume levels still seem to low for your preference, please be aware of the following:
1) Make sure that the source (e.g. TV output) is sending surround channels to the Soundbar. If the source is not capable of surround, then set the Surround mode to OFF on the Soundbar by pressing the Surround button on the remote.
2) If the source has surround channels, select the Surround Sound Mode from the Soundbar remote.
3) Turn off Dynamic Range Control. This is done by pressing and holding the SURROUND button for 5 seconds.
4) Turn off the soundbar, then press and hold the source button on the soundbar for 7 seconds to enable Gain Boost. With Gain Boost active, the rear speaker’s volume level will be increased when the soundbar is in Surround mode. This feature can be turned off by following the same process.

You can try manually optimizing your settings by selecting the Surround or Standard buttons to change the sound mode. Additionally, Press the BASS + or BASS - buttons to adjust the level of the woofer (bass) between -6 to +6.

My dad couldn't be happier

He has a hard time hearing due to years of working at the same job with really loud machines so he wanted a loud surround sound that was loud but not too loud where the whole block could hear what movie he is watching. Before buying this I had purchased 2 other surround sounds at 2 different places and I had to take them both back. Then I came to Best Buy and purchased this and my dad couldn't be happier.

However, you must be about 4 feet from the tv to adjust the volume. I am not technically savvy and depended on the sales person to advise me. The bar wasn't cheap and I wanted a wireless bar but I didn't get that. Very disappointed with the sales person.

No Bass, No Beuno

I went to the store and tried this out and it sounded like a million bucks. So I told the blue Shirt I would take this one. Fast forward to being home. I was following the directions to set it up. I had it going and it was loud at first but I got it turned down. I then was trying to configure the satellite speakers and I just could not replicate the same experience that I had in the store. Just had no bass to it at all. When I was in the store it had lots of it. So I have since returned said item. It was just so weird there was no bass when it has a button on the remote for it specifically.

It’s OK. Bass could be a lot better.

Overall it’s a pretty good system except you don’t get a lot of information back from it. For example, when you try to raise the bass there’s no gauge that shows up on the screen so you can’t tell if the base is going up or not. Also, I don’t think the bass really performs very well. If you’re looking for something to add a lot of bass, I would not recommend this unit. Other than that, It’s OK.
