Defective mp3 player

We turned it on after giving it to my daughter as a gift a few weeks after purchase. We had it working and set the date and time manually before plugging it in to the computer using the enclosed cord. We connected it to the computer to load music onto the mp3 device. After we plugged the player in, the mp3 player's screen went black and while the buttons would light up, we could not turn it off nor get anything to show up on the screen.
