    Good drive for archiving

I purchased this drive, along with another archive drive for my RAID server. The drive in this unit is the Seagate Archive drive, so it is not meant as a constant-use drive. Seagate says the following: "The Seagate Archive HDD 8TB is a high capacity, energy efficient and lower cost hard drive for active archive purposes. The drive comes with impressive burst results but lower sustained write results, which are to be expected in this class of SMR drives. The drives are intended for use in large-scale data centres where density, power consumption, data integrity and data retrieval are paramount." I have found that these drives work absolutely fine for my purposes. I am running a PLEX media server on Ubuntu LINUX with these drives and they are easily fast enough to stream HD (1080p) media without issue. The external drive seems to run a bit warm, but it is doing okay overall. I have not gotten an alert from my Synology 1513+ about the heat of the drive I installed in it, so it is operating at an acceptable temperature. You can't beat these for the price, as long as you know what they are and don't expect the best performance.

I've had this HDD for about a month or so now. I opened it up, removed the HDD and installed it as an internal drive on my desktop. So far it has been working great as expected. Would recommend for those who need a lot of extra space.

I have two of these drives and they are fantastic. Read and write speeds are suprisingly fast for a non solid state drive, and the capacity is unbeatable. If you use Plex you can store your entire collection on these without issues.

    Mammoth Storage Device

8 TB ... says it all. Using the feature this time to automatically back up my computer files whenever I make a change to a file, it notices it and backs it up automatically so I can access the latest whenever I need it. ( NOTE: the initial back up can take a very long time to do, be prepared. I personally backed up over 6 TB and it took almost two days for the initial backup to complete. Thereafter, it is quick but only works if you have the Seagate program running minimized. ) It does put all the files in a structure that you can go digging thru, but note that it is backing up whenever it notices a change so it is very confusing if you just use the Windows Explorer and go looking around at your files stored on the drive. They are listed exactly how you have them created as, so you'll notice your file names, but there is a ton of file folders to dig thru if you go looking this way. The software will bring up your back up and allow you access to this data in an organized manner, but it's interesting to find all previous versions of a particular file when you go digging. Using the software makes it easy to pull up a backed up file when needed. You don't have to use the software and back-up utility, you can not install that program and use this as a direct connected drive where you can access it just like any other drive and save files to it and access them like any other. It's very quick, being that it is USB 3.0. This is my fourth one of Seagate USB drives and none of them have failed me or given me any type of trouble.

Needed additional storage for my music, video & picture files. I like the reliability of Seagate products. Had been looking at this product for a while. As soon as it went on sale, I snagged it. Very happy with this unit.

Cheap per gig, works with Synology, but slow

This drive must have been designed with only backup functionality in mind. It's slow. As in, it took nearly 3 days to copy around 5tb of its 8tb capacity to it. Yes, I said days. I tried direct-connecting it to my Synology NAS, for backups, but it didn't help the performance. That being said, it works flawlessly, passed all of my own tests and criteria, and is very quite. I can also say it works great with my Synology 1815 NAS as a backup device, without issue. The slower performance is the only reason I subtracted 1 of 5 stars, otherwise it's great.

I bought this to store my movie collection to playback on my Xbox One. I am ripping my movies in Apple TV 1080p with AC-3/Dolby Digital sound. The file sizes are ~ 6GB per movie.

Pros: 8 terabytes and quite reliable! Cons: I had to drive all the way to the store (KIDDING) I bought one of these drives when they first came out and enjoyed it so much I bought another recently. The full price is a little steep, but if you keep a lookout for sales (or price match that online rainforest store like I did) you'll walk away happy with tons of storage!

The drive capacity is enormous and the drive works very well. Only down side is the sustained data access time and transfer rate, due to slower spindles. It's an incredible value for an 8TB drive.

I have a WD 6TB from several years ago and it's finally full so I wanted to get another external drive with just as much, if not more, storage. I do a bunch of video editing in Final Cut Pro and a project with all of its library files can get on average, for me, 350GB or more. This Seagate was just what I needed! The price can't be beat and works just as well as any other external solution I've needed in the past. I don't use it for portability sake, it is a bit heavier than, let's say, a 1 or 2TB portable laptop drive. It also needs to have an external power source (plugged into a wall socket for operation), it doesn't run on USB power alone. Transfer rate is pretty fast and is comparable to other external HHD's. I plugged it into my Macbook Pro and it mounted just fine. I did perform a clean initialization just because and I didn't need the software on the drive. I'm not using it as a Time Machine backup but instead as a drive to hold my older projects. It's very quiet and although I don't have it plugged in and "on" all the time it produces no more heat than one would expect. Overall I'm impressed and fully satisfied. If I need more storage I wouldn't hesitate in purchasing another one. Best bang for the buck!

I was actually looking for a 8TB desktop drive to upgrade my media space, but this Backup Plus was the same price as the internal drive alone so i bought it instead. I put the 8TB drive in my gaming rig and swap the old 2TB to this Backup Plus, and they both work flawlessly.

Since I started to archive my Blu-Ray movie collections from disc format to hard drive digital format, I seem to always don't have enough space. Each converted Blu-Ray movie ranges from 8GB to 19GB in size, and I quickly run out of space. This 8TB hard dive is the perfect answer to my photo and movie needs. So far I've already used up 4TB of space, guess I'll be getting a second one soon. One of the best feature about this drive is that it'll go into sleep mode when not being accessed, and this prevents the hard drive motor from burning out and over heating. I had another brand of hard drive (did not want to mention the brand, cause I didn't want to sound biased), and it never goes into sleep mode and the motor would burn out in about 6-8 months. I had 2 burned out hard drives from that brand, and I'm never buying that brand of hard drive again (and it's a well known and popular brand).
