Nice look, not the best quality audio wise (i might be picky). I like bass, but it must be clear, not muffled. These felt so muffled. perhaps its the ANC experience that I just don't like? who knows. overall, good but not for me, i had to return back to bestbuy

I wanted to like this headphones because the sound quality is very good but after 5 months of using, it stopped working. Returned to BB but there’s nothing they can do. Now, I’m going through Sennheiser for a repair.

The Momentum 4 is the latest, premium over ear wireless headphone from Sennheiser. This is my first experience with the brand but I have numerous experiences with the competitor’s brand (and headphone) in which Momentum 4 is designed to match or beat. With sound quality, and noise cancellation on the priority list for this headphones objectives, let’s take a look at whether or not it matches the competition.
In the Box:
- Headphones with carrying case (Fairly sturdy, nice case)
- USB-A to USB-C charging cable
- 2.5mm to 3.5mm cable
- 3.5mm Airplane adapter
- Warranty Info, Quick Start Material
Setup:
Taking the headphones out of the case, I noticed they immediately went into pairing mode without touching the button to turn them on (It turns out this is actually a feature). I found this strange but I proceeded to pair them via the BT menu on my phone. The process was smooth just like many other BT headphones/devices anymore. I also downloaded the Sennheiser app to control the headphones and access other settings. I will touch on the app a little later but it’s laggy.
The Momentum 4’s support aptX Adaptive which is supposed to give you the best of aptX HD without the latency. Overall it would be very hard to distinguish the difference the aptX Adaptive and LDAC from the competition in most use cases but it’s worth noting.
Sound Quality/ANC:
The Momentum 4 features 42mm drivers which are larger than most headphones in this category. Out of the box, I think the sound is very good but could be always be tweaked for preference. Luckily, you can tweak the EQ within the Sound Control app and this should fix any minor EQ issues you have with the sound. As usual, I added just a little low end and the sound was good to me.
As far as the ANC goes, this is where my biggest complaint lies with the Momentum 4. This is supposedly a big upgrade over the prior generation but doesn’t stand up to the competition in my listening. The ANC can be tweaked directly from the side of the headphone using the touch controls (very cool!) or within the app. Overall, it blocks out a lot of ambient noise but not as much as I would like. Again, for most people this is killer ANC.
As with other headphones I own, I find myself always higher up on the volume levels than I would like for the level of sound actually coming out of the headphones. Anything less than 50% volume on my phone seems overly quiet and I find myself right around that 60-75% threshold for casual listening. Distortion seems very minimal near max volume.
Comfort:
This is where I will give the Momentum a slight win over the competition. I find these to be very comfortable and can easily where them for hours at a time. I have no real complaints with the comfort. The materials and design feel quality for this price point.
Features:
The right side of the headphones feature a touch pad for several gestures. You can control music playback, calls, ANC, and transparency mode. The touch pad works well for the most part. The headphones also feature auto on/off via picking up the headphones and auto play/pause. The auto power off turns the headphone off after 15 minutes of nonuse. You can turn this off in the app or change it to 30 minutes/60 minutes for longer periods before turning off. The auto play/pause can be turned on and off in the app too.
The right side of the headphones features the power/pairing button, 5 LED indicator lights, and the 2.5mm input jack.
Battery:
These are rated for a staggering 60 hrs of music playback via Bluetooth ANC at mid volume levels. I have to say based on my playback so far, they seem to do very well even at volume levels above 50%. I would say their claim is not unrealistic if you listen at moderate levels. If you listen above 50% like me, then time will drop but overall it is very good. Charging is done via USB-C.
App:
The Sound Control app on my phone is very slow to respond to inputs. Once the headphones connect, you click them and it takes a good 6 seconds for the app to open the headphone profile. Inside the settings/controls they work but again are not overly fast to respond. If this could be improved, the app would be much better in my eyes. The layout and amount of control is great but the speed is not. I love the quick toggle to connect/disconnect from either of the 2 devices the headphones are connected to at the same time. This makes switching between two devices easy.
Pros:
- Active noise cancellation (Works well, not class leading)
- Bluetooth 5.2
- Sound quality with app integration/EQ (Very good sound quality)
- Color choice (Black and light gray)
- Fast charging capability
- Attractive design with great comfort
Cons:
- App Slow/Laggy
- No water resistance
- 2.5mm Input on Headphones
Overall:
I really enjoy using these headphones. The sound and comfort are highlights I came out with after using them for a few days. The app integration needs a little work but the bones are there and the ANC isn’t class leading from my listening but it’s not terribly far off. With the lower price of the competition, I think this makes the Momentum 4 a great value.

Good decent sound and ease of use, usually.
Tried to hook up additional phone to it but it got lost and took me an hour to get my original phone reconnected. Why, i dont know. Quite frustrating.
A weakness. Sounds good but not as good as real wired headphones, unfortunately.

The bluetooth connection is the most finicky and worst I have ever seen in a premium product. The auto-off/one feature is beyond useless. Avoid this product.
