Love the multi-device connectivity -- added with the great Sennheiser app, functionality, incredible sound, and ease of use, make this a very worthy competitor to (if not better than) Airpods Max, even for those looking for something outside of the Apple ecosystem to use within that ecosystem.

These are good headphones, but not for the price. Side by side with my Beats, I don't see a big difference. The app can be very buggy / lagging at times. I wish I saved for a little longer and purchased AirPod Max's or the Sony Headphones. The long battery life is the biggest plus for these headphones.

The Sennheiser Momentum 4 headphones are great, so long as you have the right requirements and expectations. Let’s look at them one area at a time. Design and Packaging: The first thing anyone familiar with the Momentum 3 headphones will notice is how ordinary these look. Gone is the quirky headband of the previous generation, replaced by standard ear cups and a grey fabric-covered band. This is a style, not functionality issue, so no points deducted, but I really prefer the very unique look of the Momentum 3. Now, it looks a lot like the competition. One of the most common uses of noise-cancelling headphones is to drown out the drone of commuting, be it bus, train, or plane. For me, commuting means a plane. A compact carrying case is a huge advantage. The Momentum 4s ear cups don’t flip toward the center of the band like Sony or Bose. This means the case is necessarily large. How large? I was able to get the headphones, charging cable, headphone cable, a pair of Bose Sleepbuds (with case), a pair of Jabra Elite 7 Pro headphones (with case), a small wallet, two rings, and a metal watch, and a small wallet in the case without any effort. This means that the case is really big for traveling. And this is one of the small things they missed. Connectivity: While the Momentum 4s do not have the complete suite of CODEC support found in the competing Sony, Bluetooth connectivity is still great. There’s no lag, so you can watch movies through Bluetooth without experiencing the dubbed movie syndrome. Strangely, where they messed up is in the audio cable itself. Unlike other over-the-ear headphones that use an easy-to-find mini-to-mini audio jack, Sennheiser decided to use a micro-to-mini audio jack. This means that you’ll likely have to carry an extra cable just for these headphones. And this is another small thing they missed. Fit and Comfort: The ear cups are smaller than the Sony or Bose but remain very comfortable, even on my large ears and head. The headphones are light enough to be worn for hours without feeling heavy or warm. The band slid forward slightly when I looked down at my tablet. When this happens, the noise cancelling sounds like it’s off because of a poor seal. Being aware of this allowed me to position the headband slightly differently, greatly reducing the issue. Charging and Battery: Using a standard USB-C cable, the Momentum 4 charges quickly and has a claimed battery life of 60 hours with ANC and Bluetooth on. This is amazing, and based on my usage so far, seems about right. If you really need more than this, using it with the audio cable instead of Bluetooth can significantly extend it, as can turning off the ANC. Calls: Calls are clear from both ends of the conversation, and the app allows you to control how much of your own voice filters into the headset for a more natural sound of your own voice. App: Of course, the Momentum 4 comes with its own APP. It’s a bit of a mess, representing the biggest thing Sennheiser messed up. The app is flaky, frequently requiring multiple restarts of the app and/or headphones to connect to the headphones. The equalizer has only three bands, not nearly enough to fine tune for your own listening preferences. On top of this, none of the bands is labeled or changeable. You can set up different profiles for specific listening environments, but this requires you to create an account and give them your email address, for no real reason other than they’d like to have your email address. Noise Cancelling: Noise cancelling is quite good, although not up to the level of the competing Sony or Bose. This is particularly true in the lower frequencies. Still, the difference between these three brands is relatively small, so it’s not a show-stopper. The ANC level can be adjusted, although I don’t understand why you would do this. Either you want noise blocked or you don’t. There is also an automated ANC mode, which is adaptive to your surroundings. While it works, it’s highly reactive; it’s not going to block that crying baby until after the first cry has already awakened you. I set mine at full ANC and turned off the auto mode. This works very well. Controls: There is a single switch on the headphones for power and pairing. All other actions are controlled using gestures over the right ear cup. Starting and stopping music is simple, as is volume and the call controls. The ANC level can be changed by pinching in or out. This is actually a bit annoying; sometimes fewer controls are better. Sound: This is where all the little issues are forgiven. You buy Sennheiser headphones for the sound, and these do not disappoint. Note that the Momentum 4 is part of the consumer, not audiophile, line. This means you’re not going to get the reference audio sound of some other Sennheiser models. For most people, this is a good thing, as the sculpted sound on the Momentum 4 is just beautiful, less harsh and more forgiving than a true reference headset. (I discovered quickly that you can turn down the bass for a more natural sound.) Bass notes are crisp and responsive. Recovery is fast, so there are no muddled lows. Every note is clear. The mid-range is likewise clear, and the highs are great. The harmonics are clean across the entire spectrum. Back-to-back comparisons with my Sony and Bose headsets allowed me to hear just how much cleaner the Momentum 4s sound. What is truly remarkable is how wide the sound stage sounds for a closed-back headset. While not as expansive as the venerable HD560S open-back, the difference with other closed-back headsets is quite noticeable. Conclusion: Yes, there are some small problems with the packaging, the audio cable, and the app. The noise cancelling is half a generation (or more) behind the leaders. But the sound is so glorious that I’m willing to find some more room in my backpack and put up with a bad app. Listen to them back-to-back with the competition. I’m betting it will be hard for you to go back to your previous headphones, too.

PROS - Excellent balanced sound - Intuitive touch controls - Stellar batter life - Crystal clear microphone on calls CONS - Headphones un-pause often while wearing around neck DESIGN + COMFORT First, the basics. The Momentum 4s come in a hard shell carrying case. The case has an invisible zipper, giving the case a clean look. Inside the case there is a mesh pouch and elastic holders to keep the 3.5mm headphone cable, airplane adapter, and USB-C cable tidy. Overall, the design is attractive, but a departure from the Momentum 3s and the models before it. Gone is the metal and exaggerated features for a more modern and what I assume a more widely appealing look, however the headphones now mostly blend in a sea of similarly designed headphones. While I won’t call it a “con” of these headphones, it’s okay to be different. That being said even with the additional plastic in this progression of the Momentum line, these are still obviously premium headphones. The ear cups are clean and smooth to give ample space for the new touch controls. This smoothness is contrasted with a graphite-colored cloth along the outside of the headband which has a obviously dialed in head clamping force, something that Sennheiser has perfected over the years. The foam along the inside of the headband is firm but supportive, while the ear cups is soft and comfortable allowing these headphones to be worn for hours on end. CONTROLS + PORTS Most of the controls as I mentioned are now touch on the right ear cup with the exception of a power button. A tap will play/pause, swipe forward/back to skip/restart. The Momentum 4s have an adaptive ANC which adjusts to the environment around you, but if you have this disabled you can adjust how much of your surrounding environment is blocked out by “pinching” or “zooming” on the touch controls. Additionally, with a quick double tap you can switch between maximum noise cancelation and full transparency mode if you are wanting to have a conversation with a person without having to raise your voice. One issue that I did have was with the head detection feature which utilizes "wear" sensor to detect when the cups are over your ears to automatically play/pause audio. The audio sometimes un-pauses with the headphones around my neck, which can be annoying in the middle of a conversation. I believe this is due to the clamp force causing the ear cups to touch which it then interprets as being on your head. This is definitely not a deal breaker so for now I have disabled this feature and I just play and pause manually. Sennheiser has been issuing new firmware updates so I'll be checking back to see if this gets fixed. APP The application is your place to tweak and enhance your Momentum 4 experience and there is quite a bit to unpack. The obvious inclusions are the equalizer and connectivity settings when you can manage up to two simultaneously connected devices. Sennheiser even provides a “Sound Check” feature giving you a guided method to select from different samples which sounds the best and then produce its recommendation of what equalizer settings you should use. In addition to the touch controls to select the level of noise cancelation you can adjust this through the application as well. And if you want to have certain settings in certain geographic areas, Sennheiser has you covered there too. By creating a Sound Zone you can adjust ANC and equalizer settings when entering and leaving a location automating how your headphones work when driving or traveling from your home to your office in the mornings and afternoons. Finally, Sidetone allows a mic monitoring like feature which passes your voice through the mic to the headphones when on a phone call, this is especially helpful to avoid something that I’m often guilty of, which is talking on the phone loudly when my headphones are on and the ANC is turned all the way up. SOUND And how do the headphones sound? In my opinion these headphones default setting is extremely well balanced to begin with, but I finally settled on -2,-2,+2 as my EQ settings. I listen to a mix of genres from Pop, Country, Rock, and Hip-Hop and thought the Momentum 4s provided adequate thumping bass, dynamic mids and crystal clear highs for a highly immersive audio listening experience. And on the other end the microphones sound great too! I work in an environment (data center) that has loud but pretty consistent sound and the noise canceling microphones are able to nearly eliminate the noise for the people on the side of the line to hear me clearly as well as block out the noise so that I could enjoy my music and not the buzz of computers and fans around me. Is the ANC perfect? No, it's very close to being on par with other brands and does a great job for 95% of peoples' day-to-day lives. Finally, the last great thing about the Momentum 4s is the stellar battery life that lasts over 2 days (60 hours total) and blows many other competitors out of the water. I must emphasize that the battery life is with ANC enabled, so you get a great experience the entire time you're using the headphones without compromising. I’m usually one that forgets to charge their headphones, so this is a game changer for me as I can go a week sometimes on a single charge now. SUMMARY Overall the Momentum 4's while featuring a more typical design differentiate themselves in usual Sennheiser fashion with stellar sound and battery life, while introducing new intuitive touch controls and app features. Toping that off with a great pair of microphones for phone calls and an improved ANC experience, the Momentum 4s are definitely worth your consideration if you are familiar or even new to the brand.

I'm not sure if Sennheiser maintains nonexistent quality control guidelines, but there seem to be a lot of reports online of Momentum 4s exhibiting various failures: dropped Bluetooth connections, static in one or both headphones, audio cutting out during playback, loss of sound quality settings, etc. After owning mine for about a month, the problems started. Constant Bluetooth dropouts and static in both ears, connected to both Windows and Android hosts, so these issues aren't specific to a particular platform. A $50 pair of Anker Soundcore headphones performs better than these $300 cans. Really absurd. Working through the warranty process with Sennheiser now, but I do not have high hopes of receiving a functional product.

Good decent sound and ease of use, usually. Tried to hook up additional phone to it but it got lost and took me an hour to get my original phone reconnected. Why, i dont know. Quite frustrating. A weakness. Sounds good but not as good as real wired headphones, unfortunately.
