Bob Dylan takes chances on this release as these are renditions of standards by different people that he does versions of rather than new material of his own.

When you've been around as long as Bob has, I guess it is inevitable that sooner or later you are going to drop a CD just for the money. Maybe these are songs that Bob liked long ago - but had he heard them sung the way Bob does today, I doubt we would see this CD today. Buy a copy of Blood on the Tracks or something earlier and don't encourage this kind of behavior!

Not what those songs should sound like...Bob Dylan couldn't sing as a young man, and he has worsened. He should stick to humming along in his car...

Covering old standards. I’m a big BD fan but will be glad when this phase ends.

Wonderful Nod to American Classics

Probably not what many fans of Bob Dylan would expect to hear, given his releases of the past 10-15 years. These songs, all sung at one time by Frank Sinatra, are American classics. Some are more well known, some from deep within the Sinatra catalog. The arrangements are all sparse and somewhat simplified compared the big band or heavily orchestrated versions from the 30's-60's, allowing a solid focus on Dylan's vocal. For the first time in many years, he puts an incredible effort into his singing, enunciating clearly and maintaining the beautiful melodies. Is he pitch perfect? No. Is his voice that of a grumpy old curmudgeon? Yes, somewhat. But he sings these songs with passion and emotion, and gives the listener the feeling that he has lived every word of these songs of lost love and regret. If you're not a fan of this type of music, the older Sinatra classics, this CD is not for you. But if you like Dylan, and you're open to styles of music different from anything he's done before, this is a must buy.
