Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings - I wasn’t sure what to expect here.  I was looking forward to it purely because it didn’t come with all the baggage an established character does.  I didn’t have to think about what came before.  My one reservation going in was Awkwafina.  She pretty much is the same character in every film I’ve seen her in so I was hoping I’d be surprised here.  So how does it stack up? What I Didn’t Like 
By The Numbers - While we do get some things that are new, as a whole, we all knew how this would basically go.  This is the standard formula for a solo first outing, with maybe a different shade of the same color of paint. Escape Logic - So on one hand, we have a really old villain that should know enough to make some changes and learn from a mistake.  No spoilers, but I don’t buy that he wouldn’t have evaluated a few things after a certain event that takes place before the film that would have kept something that does happen from taking place. 
What I Liked
Action - I expected this film to have some solid fight sequences due to the fact that the character was partly inspired by Bruce Lee.  I was not disappointed.  Now sure, the editing still wasn’t great, but also I appreciated it wasn’t the standard quick cut stuff we’ve been seeing for many years now.  I’d like to actually take a step back and appreciate the work that went into getting the sequence right.  It’s not perfect, but it’s a step in the right direction. A Well-Rounded Villain - We’ve been getting a lot of one-note villains in the MCU of late, so it was refreshing to finally get one that has some backstory.  One that the audience could understand in terms of their motivations.  Make no mistake: this is a cold man.  But he’s clearly a more grey individual than the standard full on evil we’ve been seeing. No Exploitation - Another fear, though admittedly very slight, was that the fighting would be the center piece with the film built around it.  Thankfully, that’s not the case.  There’s an organic reason why it’s here and it works. Final Thoughts
Shang-Chi, while not the best the MCU has to offer, is far from the worst.  It’s a rock solid introduction to the newest Avenger.  Awkwafina, while still clearly is Awkwafina in a few scenes, overall was a pleasant surprise in that she didn’t take me out of the film.  We have a villain that gets some development and somewhat relatable.  It’s not perfect, but it’s a strong entry and a strong introduction.  Definitely check this out, especially if you’ve never heard of the character.
