    I played the original digital release of this game on the Nintendo 3DS but when I saw co-op play was available with the WiiU version, I had to check it out. Granted it's locked behind the Shovel Knight amiibo, but it's totally worth it. The co-op mode offers a greater challenge with another player on screen and a new layer of fun.

    Granted, this third purchase of the game was for a friend. But I bought the Wii U download version first, so my review will be based on that version. Playing this game is like stepping back in time. A what a great moment to step back to! So good, I bought the 3DS version when physical release became available!

    Great side scrolling gameplay. Controls are spot on perfect. Difficulty is steep. I feel good that my children enjoy old school charm like this, and are willing to put aside newer games, if only until this game is beaten. Has use for Amiibo on the wii-u.
